Bah, it's cause crime pays, if you scale it big enough.

Mikey nailed it square, but lemme take it a step further - IF they do get nailed, what's gonna happen but a puny fine that's often less of a tenth of the profits made by breaking the law ?

The Chinese on the other hand, don't play that game.

Somewhere between those two extremes is a more viable solution - my reccommendation is a full and complete accounting with audit, follwed up by a fine of three times any profit made by violation of the law, and a punitive 5% penalty on ALL FURTHER PROFITS, rolled into a fund managed for the assistance and repayment of those harmed by the violation.

That'd put a stop to this shit quick enough.

As for greed/excesses, we need to steal a concept from our european friends, I forget what country it was, but someone mentioned a partical country over there had this concept of "Enough Stuff".

We should steal it and integrate it here.

And after decades of GOVERNMENT SCHOOLING, the nation has been dumbed down to the level of a child, needing it's GREAT FATHER ( or MOTHER ) - Government, to tell us how much to work, how much we can earn, when to sleep, to tie our shoes, what to buy........

Individuality and adaptive thinking have been bred out of our society, and we're left to rely on the Imperial Federal Gov't to survive.

E.g. - New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina

I'm not sure if it still stands, but there WAS a law that allowed this in copyright-infringement cases, specifically targeting knock-off or counterfeit clothing (faux Nike t-shirts and the like). It awarded triple damages if you were convicted; in other words, three times the profits you made illegally.

'Course, it likely applies only to U.S. counterfeiters, and not to the Chinese...

Folks relied on the Gov't because they had no other means of support. That's THEIR fault, not the Government's

I NEVER said the Gov't did everything " right " , which , once again, is the cause of your confusion. Gov't did what it normally does - take its own damn time in responding and even when it did, it was too little , too late. That's about as good as can be expected. The phrase - " Good enough for government work " has its origins in the common view that government workers are over paid, under worked and generally lack any real high level of skill. It applies to almost any big government dealing with a crisis, around the world. Whether its the heat wave of Paris a few years ago, or the recent brush fires in Australia, one common complaint is that " government" didn't act fast enough, or come properly equipped, or wasn't responsive to the needs of those in need, etc....

CORNCOBB

I'm late to this discussion, sorry. Quick catch-up, Rap:

1. Ommitting mention of other forms of economic system when commenting on capitalism does not automatically indicate that capitalism is wholly to blame. To assume such implication would be induction, not deduction i.e. it derives definite conclusions from observations too limited to rationally prove the hypothesis. It's a logical fallacy. Or, in smaller words, it's a crock.

2. While I agree with the maxim of 'good enough for government work', saying that the victims of Katrina deserved the consequences of that disaster for not having an economic safety net in place is pretty damn harsh. I'm sure every single person wished they had some way to cope with the crisis on their own. But another old maxim says 'wishing only counts in horseshoes...' Don't assume that these people were in that situation because they wanted to be, or were too dependant, rather than because of their class or geographical location, limited contacts and resources etc. That's be another one of those logical fallacy things.

3. A person who takes time off work for entrepreneurial pursuits risks their home, car, marriage and health? Really? cos those fist two things are no less quantifiable losses than a job, and therefore do not support the argument you were making. And the last two things shouldn't really be threatened by being jobless - not everyone measures others based on their earnings, and work often has a negative effect on people's health - in fact it kills more people than war.

I think that's three points I can pinch from your self-proclaimed total of a billion, thanks.

I just have to respond to this one post Rap, b/c it's an fine example of what goes on inside your head. And, take my word for it, it's stuff that you really don't want other people to see:
Quote:

And after decades of GOVERNMENT SCHOOLING, the nation has been dumbed down to the level of a child, needing it's GREAT FATHER ( or MOTHER ) - Government, to tell us how much to work, how much we can earn, when to sleep, to tie our shoes, what to buy........
Individuality and adaptive thinking have been bred out of our society, and we're left to rely on the Imperial Federal Gov't to survive.
E.g. - New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina

Now, since you don't have even one point to make I won't respond to your claims.

But what really, really shows through is your contempt for anyone who isn't privileged. We're the 'them' - aren't we Rap ? The 95% of 'them' who don't pay taxes, who don't deserve government representation, the sub-humans who don't count in your mental scheme.

You blew it big time. And now we all know who you really are.

Gooooood jooooooob.

1. Omitting all other economic systems, in this thread, and for this purpose, is attacking capitalism.

2. You don't know much about New Orleans, do you ? The risk that the levees could / would fail and a major hurricane would cause havok for the city has been known for generations. Folks knew ( Gov, Mayor, every man, woman and child ) and yet little was done. ) Harsh? Life is harsh. You tell folks living on a volcano that it may one day blow, and they stay put, who are you gonna blame....them? Or the Government ?

3. Anyone who leaves their job and goes after their dream of , what ever, is risking every thing. Some prepare better than others, but that does not take away from the fact that they put their future at considerable risk. Marriages are most often ended over what issue ? Money. If a person quits their job, and fails to make $$ over time, pursuing their dream,.. yeah, there's a risk their marriage might end. And their health could most certainly head south.

I see you fail to grasp the full context of what I'm speaking. obvioulsy, you've never done any such thing, quit a steady paying job to see if you can make it all on your own.... and know not of what you speak.

Actually he's right. Free enterprise isn't exclusive to capitalism. There's free enterprise in mercantilism, for instance. The major quantifying difference of capitalism is that it is focused on Capital, hence the name.

Okay, Citizen, a) thanks, and b) you have a brain. My apologies for an earlier tirade. I panicked, I hate these back and forth arguments, they're like a staring contest: Either concede or post. I don't have time to post. I don't feel I should concede when I think I'm right, but it forces the issue.

To the subject at hand, yes, of course you're right. The basis of capitalism is capital. Capital is an explicit reference to a form of inherited wealth. The first capitalists systems were african agricultural systems, where capital was perishable, but by 2000 BC or so, the gold standard had taken over as the mainstay of capital, flanked by some similar measures, which formed "persistent capital." With persistent capital, there is never a renewal, the families or institutions which possessed the capital in the last generation will possess it in the next, regardless of whether or not they produce anything.

As a system that rewards the achievements of predecessors and discourages production among descendents, its an anathema to progress. The situation was exacerbated with the concept of interest capitalism and ultimately fiat capitalism, which enables the holders of persistent capital against any threat to their dominance by the accumulation of capital by a productive non-inheriting working class outside of the families and institutions that possess capital.

A lot of the anti-semitism which evolves comes out of this reality of the system: A few now prominent Jewish families were early into the system. If ancient Egypt and Rome were still around, they would dominate, as for many centuries, the Vatican did. Even so, there are many families that were able to secure substantial capital through oil discoveries, etc., who could then being new royalty under the rules of persistent capital. And PN, that's the real link, imho: Rockefellers, I don't care what genes they carry, they got into oil, that put them on the map.

So, capitalism is a system that you can gain entry into, by starting a world war, (sorry Zurich) or simply massive international theft and black market activity (Dubai, anyone?) But progress through the free market and production of goods and services buys you only a small slice of the pie, and you can easily be taken out by extant persistent capital. Silicon valley could be swallowed by the interest on the US debt, the entire stem cell industry could be eaten for what the govt. spends in day.

Objectively, this is absurd. The progress in society is coming from the high tech and biotech sectors. A better designed economy would account then they greater share of clout, and take the banks down to the level of a security firm, because let's face it, that's what they are. They don't perform no service, but no more than any other security firm.

There have been many free market economic systems in the history of the world that do not involve the reward of persistent capital over the creation of progress.

Dad didn't. Mom did. She worked there, back in the day. Smart choice on her part, it was. And I'm far from " taken care of " , but thanks anyway for your concern. My opinion is very much valid, despite your bigoted rant.

GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

In the sense that they're both capitalist businesses, and they are both doing well in their markets, that is capitalism.

Ben & Jerry's provides high-end ice cream and a business philosophy that appeals to a certain segment of their market; a large enough segment to keep them in business and expanding.

Wal-Mart skips the business philosophy, and, whether you agree with their methods or not, provides durable goods at a price many folk without much money can afford.

One flaw I see in your argument is that it's based on the premise that everyone wants only the cheapest price. This is not the case. Folks who buy Ben & Jerry's products are willing to pay more for them because they prefer good quality(and probably the Green ethos the company espouses) over low price. I shop for a suit at Nordstrom rather than Wal-Mart because the style, quality, and customer service is better.

The other point I'd have to argue is that greed is specific to, or more prevalent in, capitalism. In other eonomic systems, where business is controlled wholly or partially by the government, the greedy tend to gravitate to the government, where they can either skim off the business income or force manufacturing to meet quotas at the expense of quality.
