The Boss and his fans like to say that he's the voice of the working man, when was the last time this dork had a real job, 1975? Wal-Mart is the place where the working man/woman go to shop, I work hard for a living and I say that the muti-millionare Boss IS NOT one of us, if he ever was.

So you're saying that if someone from a working-class background just happens to have a talent and parlays that talent into a rewarding career it automatically means he loses his working-class roots?

The Boss is this generation's Woody Guthrie, always siding with the downtrodden middle-class. If he really didn't consider Wal-Mart's credentials before making the deal I am extremely disappointed, but I think it more likely he took his publicist's advice without thinking about it.

What did the 'neocon' buddies not fess up to ?

As for Wall-Mart, they've done more for the working class of this country than our Gov't will - EVER.

Gave them jobs where they othewise might not, lowered prices to help many folks afford items otherwise they'd go with out, and there's the low cost of perscription drugs, a PRIVATE SECTOR program that cost the tax payers not one god damn penny. That puts WallMart up much higher in the morality game than some aged rock and roller will be, by a long shot.

'The Boss' should stick to music and stop making an ass of himself.

Like my prediction about Bush declaring martial law before he left office, or nuking Iran. Those were alarmist and paranoid theories, and I admit it.
You, OTOH are wrong somewhat more than average, being inextricably connected via political umbilical cord to right-wing philosophy & dogma as you are (you prolly see yourself as some sort of moderate, no doubt).

They run every other business out of town and pay slave labor wages while unionbusting to degrees so insane that in the long run it'd be cheaper to pay union wages, but their own dickheaded worldview doesn't allow for it.

Why spend six million to crush a union that's only going to cost you eighty thou a year more - which you could turn into a PR coup ?

But no, they choose to be dickheads even when it makes no business SENSE.
Which is all too many industries, and sooner or later they'll come whining for a bailout over it too, no doubt about it.

Chris,

If the response to my request to end the arguments of endless bickering was "don't respond" then by the same logic, people should have the right to not respond.

The problem with not responding is that you let the last argument stand against you as the final word. The problem with responding is you can get endlessly caught wasting time.

I know that Whozit's time is precious, and he manages it carefully, and spends it well. He's an enterprising individual with a quest for knowledge, and an even hand and an eloquence of language and taste.

Assuming he's like 5 or something

Walmart is a problem for me, because I don't believe in evil, and yet there it is, Walmart. FREM is right of course, but here's what I don't get: Why? I mean, I don't think you make more money by putting other people out of business, you only kill the concept of retail, which if you're a retailer, just isn't very bright. Apparently you also occasionally kill workers and customers. But one of the first rules of business is take your share but don't besmirch the next guy his. Walmart seems set on undermining main street, and seems to have the backing of both our govt. and China. It's like the Borg Cube.

Wal-Mart runs no one out of town. They give shoppers a CHOICE, which it appears some folks really HATE that in this world. LIke how Wal-Mart runs their business the way they want to, they do NOT pay " slave labor " wages , and if they don't want unions interfering , why the hell should they be forced to submit ?

Is Wal-Mart run by Saints and Angels ? Not hardly. They've been guilty of colluding with city officials in scamming folks out of their property, in imminent domain cases.

Big business, does have its ugly side, as do we all. But this over the top vilification of Wal-Mart by union loving socialist and those who hate is simply ridiculous.

Don't like Wal Mart ? Don't shop there.

Wal-Mart does indeed run businesses out of town. They come in, drop prices often BELOW what they're paying, figuring they've got deep pockets and can soak up a loss in one or two stores, all based on the idea that they can lower prices in one location and outlast every small retailer in the area, who typically can't operate at a loss for any appreciable amount of time.

Next up - tax abatements. Wal-Mart and several other big-box retailers not only come in without paying property taxes (property taxes on such locations are usually waived for 10-15 years to lure development into an area), which puts a higher property tax burden on other local businesses, BUT they also generally don't pay SALES TAXES either. Look into it; A Pulitzer Prize-winner wrote a book delving into it. It's not just Wal-Mart; he pointed out Bass Pro Shops and Cabella's as other examples.

These places CHARGE sales tax; in other words, they collect the money from YOU - they just don't pass it along to the state coffers. The state makes back-room deals that you are never supposed to hear about. As such, shouldn't Wal-Mart be a whole helluva lot cheaper than they are, since they're not paying sales tax (that's 8.25% here that they get to keep) and they're not paying property tax.

When their "grace period" runs out on the property tax abatement, Wal-Mart simply closes that location and moves down the road, getting the same sweetheart deal either in another part of town, or in another town. That's what they bank on: the idea that ANYONE would fight to have them there.

This isn't "free market" competition. Wal-Mart and several others simply aren't "competing" in the same world that the rest of us are. They are DICTATING the terms of the "competition". It's a rigged game.

And no, I don't shop at Wal-Mart. The ONLY thing I do at Wal-Mart is stop in when I'm on the road and need to drop the kids at the pool.

BS

the local walmart went to all the local shops, found the products they carried, and then carried those same products, at a lower price, and they did so at a loss. This is underselling, it's illegal. Then, the local shops went out of business, and walmart dropped those product lines. If a new shop started up, they'd probably do the same thing. So, yea, I don't shop there, but they do ruin an economic environment.

- If you don't like shopping there, then don't.

- Taxes. As I've pointed out, in order to soak up more tax revenue for a town, special deals w/ local gov'ts have been made. It's the cost of doing business, sadly. Unless watch dog groups aren't on top of things, things have and do go sideways, as I've plainly stated. This can't be blamed solely on Wal Mart, but also crooked local politicians.

- While there might be some incidental, anecdotal cases of entire stores moving to avoid paying sales taxes, I doubt very strongly that such practice is common. All the Wal-Marts I've known generally stay put.

Dream, your incredulity does not count as any objective measure. Sorry.
