Kirsten Gillibrand !
Huh? Who is this person?
The representive from here-ish. We're on the border of two districts, actually, the town splits. So, this freshwoman representative is now our Senator.

Yah, if it looks like she won the Hillary look alike contest, let me jar that with this

That the real difference is not that's she's related to Peggy Noonan

But that former senator Clinton is possessed by Kakistos

But the Governor is blind so I doubt this was an issue.

And haven't you heard...being Conservative is about to become the new black.

Keep the Shiny side up

"Ms. Gillibrand, a centrist Democrat from upstate who has been endorsed by the National Rifle Association,..."

Sounds good to me.

Seems a decent enough sort, solid enough resume, and being sensible enough to realize gun control as practiced is idiotic.

I don't care for the FISA vote (telecom immunity) and while spitting in the eye of the DCCC does amuse me, the reasons for it - supporting a moronic war for bullshit causes doesn't strike me as too bright a thing to do.

Overall, someone with half a lick of sense, but ONLY half.

The cult of the Blue Dog.

It's hard to see that their votes are logical in and of themselves, because they exist largely to trade votes with republicans. Most Blue Dogs were actually republicans who were chosen by the democrats to help unseat republicans that were not supporting Bush, you have to think conspiracy for this to make any sense. In this case, Sweeney, who I liked, had signed his own pink slip by being the first to call for the resignation of Rumsfeld, and himself a republican.

Any examination of the political landscape shows that center board is the most powerful position. Like chess. WTF? My spellcheck doesn't like "center." Or "Spellcheck." It always humored me the MS Office always tried to internet into "internment" Anyway, the problem is this:

If you're solidly on the left, then no republican will pay any attention to you, because they know they'll never win your vote, and the democrats will never pay any attention to you because they can take you for granted. The same goes for the solid right. This is why the hippies and christians always get screwed.

So, conspiracies aside, the Blue Dogs exist to position themselves in the middle, and become that swing vote. I think she will be the first blue dog senator.

So, individually, their votes don't make a world of sense. They got the support to get into office from the GOP who wanted to get rid of dissenting republicans, thus probably increasing the overall corruption of congress, while increasing its centrality. Some dems hail this as a sensible move to centrist, others fear it as a shady new wolf in sheeps clothing.

Probably neither, just a new group of people trying to outposition the others. When you're the swing vote in the house or the senate, people do you a lot of favors.

Well, yes, the center position is valuable...

But one real good way is again, the Jack Sparrow WTF Chaotic Neutral angle where they don't have any IDEA how to "buy" you, or what would do it.

There's an old bartering trick of deliberately not putting a price on stuff, and insisting the other guy make the first offer - cause you can often get folks to stupidly overbid their positions, and that works on a political end as well, cause you can *always* hold out for a better price if their bid doesn't come in high enough.

It also has a tendancy to cut right through the bullshit - in the end certain folk came right out and asked what it'd take to get the "howling horde" off their case regarding the FLDS, and more importantly, cause a certain legal case against the perps who initiated the raid to "go away", and the given price was met, thus ending our involvement on the spot.

That's the reason for obfuscating your position, it makes them wonder, and if they want your support, it puts them in a position where they have to come to you and ASK, initiating more of a customer-supplier dynamic than lord-peon.

Another good use of it is the manipulation of rigid-minded fools to shoot themselves in the foot - if they see you as a loose cannon, well, no one wants a loose cannon on THEIR deck, and so they feed you to their opponent with a little helping hand expecting them to choke, only to realize they just handed the other guy the very means with which to capitalise on that screw up, or, if you hate em both, you can play ping-pong and weaken each one of them substantially as they play hot potato trying to get rid of you to the other one.

The ability to raise howling mobs of torch and pitchfork bearers is a valuable commodity in any political environment, and when combined with an inability to externally determine what you want, or what would cause such to be unleashed, is a damned good recipe for making political folk step very carefully.

Just some thoughts on the matter.

I agree on the Jack Sparrow angle if you want actual influence. I'm not sure whether the blue dogs want the influence for their own sake, or whether they're just after the goodies they get bought for.

Also, never count on an american political party to take the smartest route.
