Thread For River

Lol@Obama fixing everything, and sure, all of that is basically politics, but I agree. Let's ignore the power struggle that we have no way to affect. Even if I think that Obama will probably sink the ship, I'm not ready to dig a hole in the ground and stock up on shotguns and baked beans.

Still, plans for the future should not be made in ignorance of worst case scenarios. I suspect that the hapless pollyannas are going to find themselves in a tough spot. Let's just assume a great depression, and not panic, and plan to have happy productive non-confrontation lives anyway.

I'm thinking of maybe getting a sailboat.

I'm open to any suggestions.

If you're gonna be in a hole in the ground , you're right...Baked beans are not your best choice...

A good 12 Ga. scattergun will serve you well...Stock up on ammo anyway , it's going to be much more expensive in the future...

Since you're thinking sailboat , a stainless-steel Mossberg Mariner pump-gun will help you repel boarders , looters , pirates , Reavers , or if near Haiti or certain US ports , Zombie hordes...

FREMDFIRMA

Well, at most basic...

Food, Water, Shelter and the ability to defend it.

Playing solo isn't really the way to go, a tightly knit group or community is.

Where I reside, even now, is just north of an agricultural district full of small scale farmers and a couple vinters/brewers, and with a couple local freshwater lakes.

Food wouldn't be too big an issue, nor would water since there's plenty of distillation rigs around here, don't ya know.

And my skills at adapting and repairing generators, tractors and such are quite valued as I am willing to exchange them at a very good rate for food, and am indeed capable of converting gasoline powered small engines to alcohol fuel should it come to that - the diesel units can run bio-D just fine but it takes a damned lot of crop value to make that stuff, so best be sparing there.

I figure, we'll do ok, we got what we need, and the ability to make sure it stays in our own hands, far beyond what one would expect.

It's the folk in the cities that concern me, cause they'll be in a bad spot indeed, a city environ can turn ugly so fast you'd never believe it - and getting out's a nightmare scenario if you're depending on road travel.

Funny you should mention it cause one of the farmers has asked me if I could convert a Rotax ultralight to alcohol fuel this spring, I guess we'll see - problem is that it tends to pit aluminum unless you go heavy on the oil mix.

EDIT: Although on second thought, that idea makes me a little skittish, since I also happen to be the only one around here that knows how to fly one of them things... and chuck yeager, I ain't.

Thanks,

I was hoping for some less paranoid plans. I agree with Frem that a group is better, but hold your ground sucks as a strategy. Look at Waco, and South Hills. Or anywhere. Be on the move like Capt. Mal.

Be less paranoid , then...

Hey , the best of plans only survives 'til the first engagement...

Past that , you'd better have another...And another...

Hope for the best , be prepared for , and EXPECT the worst , and be content with what you have...

It's really only paranoia if some folk AREN'T out to get you...

Heck , some Folk thought Paul Revere was paranoid , alarmist , probably a delusional scaremonger...

But , as it turns out , the British really WERE coming...

Mobility can be important , even essential to survival , but if you can't make a stand and hold your ground when you need to , you won't survive 'til your next opportunity to get mobile...

Shepherd Book would tell you : " Dead Folk don't go far..."

Well, thing is, you can't very well pack up a field of crops not ready for harvest and carry it with you, so you really do need some way to defend it, and we have some innovative ones indeed - farmers have a lot of time to think up stuff, and with a maniac like me around to turn some of those thoughts into realities...

We'll be ok.
