How would that affect Lois in his arms? Would it be a distortion a human could survive? And if so, what about a bird flying into his path, would it also not be 'distorted' in a kind of wake?

Kryptonian Memory Bank gives this theory a thumbs down.

Space would contract in front and expand behind, and as long as the center remained “flat”, then there would be no perception other then weightlessness. Lois would appear to “fly” as well, as long as she was within superman’s plateau of space, but if she got out of it she would fall. The problem with this is that in front or behind superman, where the space is distorted, there could be tremendous tidal forces that would ripe Lois apart if she fell out of the plateau in either of those directions.

The same could be said of a bird flying directly into superman. It would be ripped apart by the gravity shock layer.

Nihil est incertius vulgo, nihil obscurius voluntate hominum, nihil fallacius ratione tota comitiorum.

Nothing is more unpredictable than the mob, nothing more obscure than public opinion, nothing more deceptive than the whole political system.
