'..If the program pans out it will give security agents an “up close and personal” capacity, let’s just call it for the sake of argument, that real-world intel touch required to disrupt meetings or smash an organizing drive even as they’re taking place. Now that’s real progress! '

'...Thus, the new technoscience of the urbanized RMA [Revolution in Military Affairs] concentrates on distinguishing ‘normal’ urban space-times and ecologies in the global north, so that the apparatus of an increasingly militarized police state can be used to discipline those deemed ‘abnormal’. (Stephen Graham, “Surveillance, urbanization, and the ‘Revolution in Military Affairs’,” in D. Lyon, Theorizing Surveillance, Uffculme, Devon: Willan Publishing, 2006, p. 264)'

'...And as we have seen in recent surveillance scandals in the U.S. and elsewhere, those deemed “abnormal” include:
union organizers, antiwar activists, socialist parties, antiglobalization campaigners, environmentalists, animal rights activists, civil liberties and human rights organizations, the list goes on and on. Indeed, from the point of view of state security agencies and their outsourced corporate partners, potentially “abnormal” or at least politically “suspect” individuals encompass the vast majority of citizens.'

FREMDFIRMA

I don't have the cite handy, but the first time they tried this, it was with a small cellphone provider with their permission, right around the time the V-chip came out.

Almost immediately some hackers used the back door to run up huge bills, and since nobody told the customers, initially they took the blame till it came out in court about the backdoor they were using and who installed it.

At which point the provider in question went under financially very quick, given the bills plus the lawsuits.

It was an absolute catostrophic failure, and as is typical of the alphabet goons, their first though was "hey, let's do it to something bigger" and then they went on a field trip to the soviet union to drool over and study SORM-II.

Which lead to Carnivore, in spite of three congressional directives against funding, building, or using it in the fashion they meant to, and then Omnivore, and then a room down at AT&T no one wants to talk about, right ?

But I still remember that cellphone crap that came before it, that was what drew my attention in the first place and I have never forgotten it.

It was also brought back into focus when a telephone company employee used some of those backdoors to harrass a girl who's friend contacted us to do something about it, since he was able to record her dinner table conversations and play them back in edited form on her answering machine with threats and innuendo, as well as accessing her phone's camera.

Those backdoors are already there, folks, have been for quite a while.

It also should raise concern about ANY of this crap (like the ADS pain beam for example) cause they can say the intent is to use it on "bad guys" but have you noticed they always, always, ALWAYS wind up using it on US instead, right ?

Simple solution, really - cut their fucking funding off, and actually bust them for drug dealing to bulk out their budgets, prolly do wonders for privacy, security, and the massive influx of cocaine too.

The gravest threat to our national security...
is our National Security.

Terrorists one and all.

It cannot be said enough, those who do not learn from history, are doomed to endlessly repeat it

As in "disruption" of Ron Paul, Jesse Ventura or 3rd Party political campaigns.

As if email wasn't easy enough to wiretap without court order.
