News today that MSNBC has removed Chris Mathews and Keith Olbermann from anchoring any future political events. ( aka debates, election nite) They will remain in their regular cable shows, and be available as commentators for future events, but will not be anchoring.

The reason for this is that MSNBC had abysmal ratings for the 2 conventions, dead last, and apparently there was some verbal sparring on the air between the two.

Well that all figures. Just this past Friday I posted here that I thought MSNBC's coverage of the Republican convention was outstanding, even better than Fox's. I praised them for their complete coverage and honest panel discussions. I didn't see any of the usual Olbermann "one-sided dissections", and Mathews did a great job too.

So what gives over there at MSNBC? They also just got rid of Dan Abrams. His politically moderate show will now be replaced by Rachel Madow. I don't expect anything but nasty Air America vitriole coming from her. It appears to me that MSNBC is punishing Mathews & Olbermann because they didn't beat up and trash the Republicans during the convention. Maybe they both had a 'Dammit Jim, I'm A Journalist" moment, especially when talking with Tom Brokaw. My take is that if MSNBC actually cared about ratings and staying in business, they would encourage a little moderation once in a while, which is what they had with Abrams at least. They're totally banking now on attracting the fringe haters, that's all they want watching now.

MSNBC is banned by Comcast in Knox County Tennessee.

Obviously that hurts ratings of MSNBC, since Comcast bans all customers from watching it.

Well, if you watched them at the Democratic convention, you'd understand why they were kicked off future debate coverage. It wasn't pretty. I like Olbermann (Countdown is among my favorite shows), and I'm okay with Matthews, but listening to them and Joe Scarborough go at each other was really just embarrassing and unprofessional.

I think they made a concerted effort to tone it down and "fair it up" at the Republican convention, but by then the damage was done. Brokaw reportedly is NOT happy with either of them, because he views NBC as having to at least TRY to be objective in their coverage, and he finds MSNBC in general, and Olbermann and Matthews in particular, as far too biased toward their own favorite Democrats.
