"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Quote:

I think that sums up what many think , whether Democrat or Republican. I'm thinking the kid IS his, and will continue to think that until they ever do perform that test. I don't care what he says, his word means zilch.

And on that, we find common ground.

And I'm with you on the kid's-his-until-proven-otherwise part, too. Sure, he's *supposed* to be presumed innocent, but we already tried that, and he admitted to lying about it. As such, the onus is now on him to convince us there's anything about this whole deal that he WASN'T lying about!

What I'm most disturbed about is the payments from his PAC. It just reeks of typical Washington behavior. Why won't these clowns EVER learn that it ain't the crime that screws you, IT'S THE COVER-UP!

What exactly was your objection to the Two Americas framing?

can't wrap my brain around why it's offensive to you to point out obvious disparity.

Clinton was rightfully dibarred for lying under oath, but why exactly was he being asked a personal question while under oath? How could that have connected to any matters of state?

fill me in there too, if you will.

The ONLY answer is to elect someone for president that has a stupid crazy beautiful spouse....

I generally don't post over the weekends - but I'll make one last exception before I get to work.

I DON'T CARE WHO SLEEPS WITH WHOM. As long as they are of age and there's no coercion, I DON'T CARE.

I supported Edwards because he had policies that I thought were good.

The REST of you need to get your noses out of other people's bedrooms and out from under their sheets.

Is that plain enough ?

No. To me moral strength encompasses being ethical, virtuous, even noble. Do you think adultery and then lying about it fits the criteria? And if not, what right did Edwards have to run on those ideals? Reeks of hypocrisy too me which I believe we can all agree is unacceptable.

Rue, John Edwards disagrees with you. Here's what he told Katie Couric when she asked him if it's appropriate for voters to be concerned with a candidate's marital fidelity:

"Of course. I mean, for a lot of Americans -- including the family that I grew up with, I mean, it's fundamental to how you judge people and human character -- whether you keep your word, whether you keep what is your ultimate word, which is that you love your spouse, and you'll stay with them. ... I think the most important qualities in a president in today's world are trustworthiness -- sincerity, honesty, strength of leadership. And -- and certainly that goes to a part of that."

I'm on the same page with you here BDN- I WILL not use something like this to point out a flaw in one public official, and not in another.
Run on a moral platform, you'd better be gorram moral.
Asked if you had an affair, you'd better not lie- even "none of you business" would be acceptable.

Edwards effed-up big time on both counts, as far as I'm concerned...I'm sick of this lying s**t.
Wanna have it both ways? Fine. So either be prepared to fess up, or get out of public service.

JFK banged anything pretty with two legs. That didn't keep him from being a good President (Bay of Pigs notwithstanding).

There are character flaws I would worry about in a sitting President: being a closeted anything (Not that I worry about gays or lesbians, but if you can' admit the truth about yourself to yourself then you and reality are passing strangers at best); sociopaths; paranoids and other delusionals (including those who have recived special missions from GOD).

Adultery is not one of the things I worry about. People make mistakes. 25% of adults admitted having an affair and I'll bet there're are whole lot more than did but wouldn't say. I think that places Edwards pretty much in the middle of the pack.

What I find disturbing is that people would be such moral Puritans they would rather gossip endlessly about Edwards' affair (which in the scheme of things is pretty insignificant) than talk about life-and-issues. I suppose it gives some a chance to exercise their moral outrage.

I'm sorry, I have a strong Leftist streak in me as you probably are aware, but when you enter public life, you'd better be able to control yourself some. It's not a 'failing' to undress a woman & put your penis in her, it's a CHOICE.
And if you make that choice, you'd better be able to say, "Yeah, my Wife knows about it, and yeah, I did it- so what?"

I haven't seen Edwards condemn anyone for having an affair, have you ? I've seen him describe the values the US public holds (as ignorant, puerile and lewd as they are), but I've never seen him judge anyone by that standard himself.

It is possible to personally fail to meet the highest stgandards 100% of the time (do any of us ever manage to succeed ?) and STILL strive for better, even moral, government.

Rapo, you're really reaching beyond reasonable rhetoric for that. Two Americas? Did you know that 25% of Americans have admitted to having an affair at some time during their marriage? And I'll bet the real number is more like 50%. So AFA I'm concerned (like I said before) that puts Edwards pretty much in the middle of the pack.

Not a nice thing to do, surely, but not so unusual.

So find yourself another issue to flog, because that doesn't hack it.

That would have been the better approach in that circumstance.

On topic, but from a different angle ...

You will rarely find a post from me about my family. When I do mention them, no matter how indirectly, it's usually b/c I sense someone here struggling with a personal issue that I might illuminate from experience (usually painful). I respect my family's privacy as something that is theirs to share, or not, as they see fit. Not mine.

I think Edwards together with his wife could have found a better approach. Or maybe that was the approach she preferred. We will probably never know. But there was a lot that involved other people besides John Edwards, and I don't fault him for keeping their privacy private.

Aside from that, it still doesn't matter to me what anyone does in bed with any consenting adult. And crap questions about that deserve whatever crap answer they get.

"best be prepared to spill the beans if attention comes to it, or better yet, have no beans to spill is all."

Then you'd better the kind of person to make your family walk the plank with every twitch and poke from the 'news' media. Or have the same done to your pastor, your neighbor, your college roommate from 20 years ago, your realtor, in fact, anyone you've ever met in your life ...

And, ChrisIsAll, you will NEVER find a candidate without moral blotch. Gandhi routinely slept with young girls (in the 10 - 12 year old category) to 'test his purity' . Mother Teresa felt she was living a lie since she hadn't felt god's presence in decades though she preached it every day . Abe Lincoln was a gay (at best bisexual) man who married the wealthy daughter of a landholder to get ahead in political life - and he may have had gay affairs on the side during his marriage. John Kennedy was a serial womanizer.

If you are waiting for a saint who also wants to implement good moral policies, you'll be waiting a long, long, long time.

Hey Chris, I agree with Rue. You will not find ANYONE who has no beans to spill. If it's not an affair it's an undocumented nanny or an unlicensed contactor... or an abortion. Since 30% of all women have had one, that means statistically speaking that 30% of all women in Congress have had an abortion and 30% of all men in Congress are married to a woman who had one, and some percentage are fathers to daughters who've had one. (And that's not even counting Congressional mistresses). Statistically, 10% of all people on Congress are gay. There's minor tax cheating, and smoking pot, and all manner of stuff that anyone could dredge up.

You gotta be able to distinguish the important stuff from the trivial.

I'> do'nt think Bush lied about WMD's he was wrong. Everyone, Kerry the U.N. and other countrys thought they had WMD's.

That lie doesn't get any truer no matter how many times you repeat it. "Everyone" didn't think they had WMD's. There were questions, and there were inspections under way, and the Bush Administration didn't want to wait because - god forbid - the Iraqis might have been found NOT to have WMD, and that would screw up their whole agenda of regime change.

If "everyone" thought they had them, then why did many of the UN members vote for continuing the inspections and holding off on military intervention? And why did the Bush Administration find it necessary to forge a letter "linking" Saddam to Al Qaeda? And why was it necessary to fake the documents allegedly showing Iraq to be acquiring uranium from Niger?

Back on the topic of Edwards, it's not the affair that bugs me the most; humans have human failings, and most men have the philosophy of a dog - if I can't eat it or fuck it, then piss on it. What bugs me is that, when asked about it point-blank, he CHOSE to lie about it. He lied to reporters, he lied to friends and supporters, and he lied to his staff - and then he had them repeat those lies. He didn't merely sully himself; in persisting with the lie, he sullied the reputations of a good number of decent people who spread the lie for him. THAT is immoral, in my book.

So it's not the sex, it's not the affairs - it's the lies. THAT is what pisses me off about Edwards. And I realize that a politician lying should be news to exactly nobody... still, it isn't pretty to watch it all unravel.

All-righty, Kettle - go ahead and call him black. My guess is that he's not so "dum" that he can't actually spell the word "dumb".

So where's that leave you?

Kwicko... but there is the problem that Rue pointed out: Admitting to a truth (Yes, I'm gay/ had an affair/ had an abortion/ had electroshock therapy/ took hardcore drugs/ cheated on sale of a home/ adopted a child/ had group sex/ have HIV) affects not only the candidate but their family. That shouldn't be part of being a public person's spouse or child. So how do we balance the public's "right to know" with the candidate's and family's right to privacy? What DOES the public have a "right to know"?
