Can inanimate objects fuel hate crime? I dunno. Go to a predominantly black area of town and hang a noose from a tree and burn a cross beside it, and see what kind of reaction you get. Or go to a synagogue and burn a swastika into the grass, and see what the authorities have to say about it. My gut instinct is that SOME objects are so hateful in their legacies that they become symbols of hate, and thus become hate crimes in and of themselves.

But I think the real question you're asking is whether looking at something in an historical context constitutes a hate crime, in which case I'd say, "No, it doesn't."

Discuss away.

its not for me the objects that insight the hate but the context given to them .the more you try to stop certain things like the swastika which has been banned in germany has only had the opposite effecet by making it underground and germany has recently has seen an upsurge in nazi gangs i believe because of the ban has made it desirable as a statement of under ground culture to certain types of people . the point about the burning of crosses and hanging of nooses is different as the kkk is still very much alive in the american culture and still exist today
