Trust drug may cure social phobia.

"The researchers found that oxytocin reduced activity in two regions which act as natural "defence barriers".

They are the amygdala, which processes fear and danger, and an area of the striatum, which helps to guide future behaviour, based on reward feedback."

That's just morbid and creepifyin, innit ?

I love how they couched it in such benevolent terms, when we all know damn well that every army recruiter and used auto salesman in the country would be fiending for a way to expose potential victims at the door.

Some high end hotels play a variation of this type of psychological chain pulling by venting the dryer exhaust from the laundry into the double-door airlock thingie during the winter, not only saving heating costs, but the smell of fresh laundry also puts potential customers in a more positive and relaxed mood as they enter.

As suspicious and untrusting as I am, I stopped dead in place for a moment to ponder this, and then laughed because it's quite slick and mostly harmless.

I doubt that this oxytocin is at all harmless, myself - and like the reavers, some small segment of society will have a negative reaction to something like this, which would be interesting all in itself, wouldn't it ?

It cannot be said enough, those who do not learn from history, are doomed to endlessly repeat it

If you search the internet you will find a company that already sells a body spray with this stuff targeted at sales professionals.

I sent this off to the geek squad, who's FIRST thought was to cook it up in a breath mint form for talking to the police - especially useful for those traffic stops when they like to lean down right into your face and try to intimidate you.

My proposal to em was, hey, if it goes one way, why not the other, and suggested investigation of a skepticism formula, combined with a few snide hints on how best to use it.

There's nothing new under the (Blue) Sun...

I love this stuff actually , and have been using it for a long time...

It's my drug of choice , really . Can't recommend the abuse of it , but it does have 'legitimate' purposes :

(IPA: /ˌɔk.sɪ.ˈtoʊ.sɪn/) (Greek, "quick birth") is a mammalian hormone that also acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain.

In humans, oxytocin is thought to be released during hugging, touching, and orgasm in both sexes. In the brain, oxytocin is involved in social recognition and bonding, and may be involved in the formation of trust between people[1] and generosity.[2][3]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxytocin

Some notable 'bullet points' in the article :

*According to some studies in animals, oxytocin inhibits the development of tolerance to various addictive drugs (opiates, cocaine, alcohol) and reduces withdrawal symptoms.[21]

*Certain learning and memory functions are impaired by centrally administered oxytocin.[12]. Also, systemic oxytocin administration can impair memory retrieval in certain aversive memory tasks. [23]

*MDMA (ecstasy) may increase feelings of love, empathy and connection to others by stimulating oxytocin activity via activation of serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, if initial studies in animals apply to humans.[24]

There are a LOT of users of this stuff !

I remember a pop song by Meredith Brooks from a few years back , in which she referenced 'an oxytocin high' , probably due to something that started like this :

" In women, it is released in large amounts...

...after stimulation of the nipples..."

The problem is that in chewing it you are getting a much bigger dose than the other person, which means you could end up liking the traffic cop a lil too much...

CITIZEN

I remember reading a book written by the friend of my Father's, called the Self-Destruction syndrome, set about twenty-thirty years in the future, where a British exec travels to a sister company in the US. He's met by a group of the sister companies execs and sales-personnel, and finds himself instantly attracted to one of the female execs, and quite compliant. He assumes it's down to the power of their well rehearsed sales pitch, until in the car it's explained they're testing a new aerosol drug, designed to help sales teams. They then point to cone shaped structures lining every street, and explain that they help stop riots. When a riot is just starting the cones pump out a mild air-borne tranquilliser, which stops most riots in their tracks.

However, when there isn't a riot they pump out a mild stimulant, because this makes people spend more money...

More insane ramblings by the people who brought you beeeer milkshakes!
No one can see their reflection in running water. It is only in still water that we can see.

Oxytocin high? For sure, had it many times while nursing my babies. Part of the plan for bonding families. Baby needs nurturing, Mama provides it, is rewarded by feelings of love for the baby and feeling loved by the baby.
