Almost any idea is workable if it's engineered carefully enough. I think the simplest way to reduce party prominence would be to limit the size of a party. The republican party would be split, and hero, therightstuff and auraptor could have one half and me, antimason, casual, would get the other. Then you just lower the level eny time it seems that the parties are getting to a point where they represent multiple political perspectives, they should split. Then, ultimately, if you make sure the leadership of each faction truly respresents that position, then the problem would be pretty much solved.

The same thing, btw, is true of the democrats, if you do a show of hands, who agrees with clinton on his campaigns in iraq, haiti, somalia, bosnia-croatia (you might get one or two to support the kosovo-serbia thing) or who agrees with clinton's handover to halliburton, his pro-globalist merger stance, his anti-welfare stance, etc. You're going to find there are really very few democrats on this forum who politically agree with clinton. They may have voted for him because he was the party platform. Furthermore, even if you split the clinton-lieberman faction of the party off, you still have divides here, I think there's a moderate liberal camp here and a far left camp.

Eventually, I suspect there are about seven or eight clear political factions in this country, and in most contries that are not winner-takes-all, there are that many parties.

The simple solution is to kill winner takes all, then the rest of that can be enacted.
