Will this be another of our misguided attempts to "help"? Or the beginning of another of our efforts to "police the world"?

The United States and Germany are sending Patriot missiles and troops to the Turkish border, a warning to Syria's besieged President Bashar al-Assad.

The surface-to-air interceptors would be "dealing with threats that come out of Syria," said U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Threats would include Syrian strikes inside Turkey and fighting between the government and rebels that extends into Turkey.

Errant Syrian artillery shells struck the Turkish border town of Akcakale and killed five Turkish civilians in October. More at http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/14/world/meast/syria-civil-war/index.html?h

Well, hell; Iraq isn't eating up our forces (much) anymore, Afghanistan is winding down...gotta do something with all that weaponry laying around doing nothing, right?

Hello,

I don't mind missile defense systems overmuch, but I do worry this is in anticipation of additional military activity.

Am I the only one who surprised that it takes 400 troops to man two ( 2 ) Patriot missile batteries ?

I mean, there's the ordinance, the guidance system, the semi-trailer which carries the launch items... I suppose there's supply and maintenance, but still...400 troops, for just 2 batteries ?

There are many aspects to our worldwide military deployment which one might find surprising, or in some cases disturbing. Personally, I am totally against spending hundreds of millions of our tax dollars to defend countries that are economically better off than America, and certainly have the resources to defend themselves. It's long past time for countries like Germany, Japan, and South Korea to pull up their big girl underpants.

It's also long past time to stop giving billions in aid money to countries that are un-cooperative or downright hostile to America like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Mexico, and many others. We're the biggest saps on the planet. We're like pathetic masochists, begging our whip-weilding mistresses to simultaneously love us and hurt us. I thought when TP Republicans took control in the House two years ago the free-flowing spigot of wasteful dollars would be shut off. What a joke! Har har har dee har har! And I really liked when candidate Romney said he'd re-assess all foreign aid by starting them all off at zero. Countries would then have to "earn" our aid dollars for something worthwhile. Too bad he only had that position during the primaries. Forgot all about it during the actual presidential campaign. The mandatory cuts from fiscal cliff sequestration can't come soon enough.

Are we sure that WE'RE the ones spending that $ ? Isn't Turkey pitching in some ? Or, because it's NATO, we're pretty much obligated to pay for damn near everything, because, we ARE NATO ?

While I'm not aware that I'm your huckleberry, could you please explain the Val Kilmer remark ?

Socrates left no writings of his own, thus our awareness of his teachings comes primarily from a few ancient authors who referred to him in their own works.
