UPDATE: 6:44 p.m.: Demonstrators in an anti-war and anti-corporate greed protest in downtown Washington have accepted an offer from the National Park Service to extend their permit by four months.
The offer was made and accepted Monday evening.

The protesters, who have spent the past four days camping in the city's Freedom Plaza near the White House, say they are discussing the offer.

October 2011/Stop the Machine has scheduled other marches and rallies throughout the week. Its permit had been set to expire on Monday and organizers said they had planned to stay put anyway.

The group began camping in Freedom Plaza on Thursday, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the start of the war in Afghanistan on Friday.

The National Park Service is responsible for issuing permits to groups who hold events in Freedom Plaza. If groups operate beyond their permit, the U.S. Park Police is responsible for removing the group from the the plaza.

Couple of interesting points about this.

The NPS has already issued permits for several other protests, rallies, etc. in Freedom Plaza, and has let the Stop The Machine folks know they'll have to move on those days to allow the other folks to use the park. We'll see how that works out.

Also, it gets really cold in D.C. in December/January. Hope the folks camping are ready for this.

Hello,

It seems likely to me that they will receive donated cold-weather materials if they need them.

I have mixed feelings about people being allowed to camp indefinitely as protestors. Homeless people aren't usually allowed to set up tent cities for any length of time, and they really have nowhere else to go sometimes, so why would protestors be allowed to? I imagine a lot of homeless folks will join the protest because they'd get a safe and free place to pitch their tents without the city telling them to move along.

And most of the protestors already have warm weather clothes, whereas lots of homeless don't, so do you think people will donate to the protestors instead of donating to the homeless who really need those things more?

I'm concerned about this.
