Hello,

Perhaps in 5 years, we will have Gaming PCs that don't need cooling fans, and mobile devices like tablets, netbooks, and cell phones will endure typical usage throughout the course of two weeks without needing to recharge their batteries at an outlet.

DREAMTROVE

Mobile devices can already be set up to charge on solar power.

I suspect the reduction of power of gaming machines depends a lot on algorithm. If you limit the programming power available to games, they quickly evolve back down. The same code can be done in about 1% the space with identical effect, the problem is the same as with monster OS stuff like Vista. Ie. If there are available routines to draw X or make collision check Y, programers call them rather than tailor their own. If you limit the power, they redesign.

The hitch in my solar ipad plan is that the ipad is designed to take 10W input from the charger, even though it only uses 2.5W. A 2.5W Panel would be just about exactly the size of the iPad.

Another snag is that a solar panel doesn't always yield its spec numbers. Reading about, I see people saying powerfilm does the best at maintaining a decent yield under uncertain sunlight. Also, people get a much better result if they have a battery in the middle, as the mobile device can draw off the battery. This would probably work as a mobile iPad solution: A smaller solar pad to a battery to the iPad. A lot of these are folding, for cell phones, great for the woods, but awkward on a city street, unfolding a square yard of material onto someone's car.

What's more curious to me is the evolution of the solar cell tower in India. The difficulty of getting powerlines to locations for cell towers has forced the evolution of a low power transmitter that runs on its own local solar. This creates a completely grid-free communication system.

Right now I'm stripping all data from the iPad. I had to give up on its domestic mail, because with it on, it will not provide protection of the data at all. Anyone with your iPad can get your email, and use it. The iPad offers you this fallback: "If the wrong passcode is entered 10 times, reformat the iPad." That's a terrible solution. It should be protected from someone accessing your personal information at any point, including when the iPad is already on. Also, it should be secure enough that someone can't intentionally reformat your iPad. That seems like a thief-enabler.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

"Mobile devices can already be set up to charge on solar power."

Hello,

Well, yes, despite the misleading title of the article, the point is not really just the solar power. That is just one potential boon. The low-power consumption of the chips and the memory is the big news, something which has benefits across the board.
