Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Been off for two days because internet shut down. In that time, I heard a couple of stories and have a bit of news.

First, I'm hearing stories about workers and hazmat suits. BP is at this time apparently only allowing people they HIRE to work the beaches. At first I heard BP was telling its workers not to wear the gear because it "doesn't look good". The seonc was BP actually telling workers they'll be FIRED if they wear hazmat suits! I can't find anything on the internet. I'm pissed, to say the least.

Second, I spoke at length to one small organization in the area with which I had registered. They said BP is being very slow at providing gear and training...they hope that will improve in the next month or so. We had a long discussion about BP (ahem!) and they're as frustrated as anyone. Hopefully our government will take over and let volunteers do useful work...right now they're only being allowed to do pre-cleanup on beaches and other things non-oil oriented. It's very frustrating, as I'm hearing they make paid employees sign waivers before working, and damned if I want to work for BP anyway.

Third, I finally heard back from Wildcare. They're waiting to be called up, too, but figure they'll be going sooner or later, as people become needed. Like I said and everyone knows by now, the first wave of people will burn out, have to return to jobs, get sick or whatever, and this will be going on for a long time. Karen Wilson, head of Wildcare, and I have been e-mailing, and she says she definitely will let me go with them when they go. May be a while, dammit, but I've got ONE organization I know I can go with.

Fourth, I'm trying to reach Jay Holcomb, who I believe is the same person I worked under at Wildcare back when it was Marin Wildlife. He's now head of IBRRC (International Bird Rescue and Rehabilitation Center). IF I can reach him and he is the Jay Holcomb I remember, I may find some way to get into bird rehab--tending cleaned birds, building/cleaning cages, something like that. Wish me luck; obviously it's what I'd like to do most, besides beach cleanup, and seems to be the only way to get involved directly, given BP's game.

I'm working on this daily and hoping something will pop up, or I can MAKE something pop up. I've priced breathing gear, boots, gloves and hazmat suits, and since we've heard about people being sick, Jim's pulled enough that I can buy the equipment if necessary. Turns out I could get it all for under $100, if I buy cheap stuff. I don't want to buy it until I know I'll actually need it. He's been really wonderful about this; being as how money means so much to him, I'm amazed he'll do this for me. He does know how I feel about it, and how much it means to me, so I'm grateful he feels this way.

Ooo...it finally occurred to me to look Jay Holcomb up. There's a biography of him on IBRRC's webpage: IT IS HIM! "He began his career at the Marin Humane Society and then helped found the wildlife rehabilitation program at the Marin Wildlife Center in San Rafael, CA". That's my Jay! So here's hoping I can find a way to get in touch...this is exciting. I might not only be able to worm my way in THERE, I might be able to get Wildcare out there early!
