NASA Hopes to Fly Plane on Mars Amid Ingenuity Helicopter's Success

Development of some kind of Mars plane has been continuing for several years with the hopes such a vehicle could collect atmospheric data or visual information. NASA experts provided more details in an Ask Me Anything session posted on Reddit, Monday.

David Berger, STEM Engagement Embed to Aeronautics at NASA's headquarters, confirmed it is possible to fly a plane on Mars, and that it would face similar challenges as Ingenuity.

Berger said: "There have been many airplane studies both within and outside of NASA. The NASA ARES Mars Airplane is one example and led to a high altitude flight test here on Earth. NASA Interns are working on a Mars glider concept."

Mars helicopter fails to take off on fourth test flight

The same sort of software glitch that delayed the Ingenuity Mars helicopter's first flight earlier this month cropped up again Thursday, preventing the small drone from taking off on its fourth test flight. The 167-day mission was the longest for a crew capsule launching from the U.S. The previous record of 84 days was set by NASA's final Skylab station astronauts in 1974.Saturday night's undocking left seven people at the space station, four of whom arrived a week ago via SpaceX."Earthbound!" NASA astronaut Victor Glover, the capsule's pilot, tweeted after departing the station.

SpaceX began supply runs in 2012 and, last May, launched its first crew, ending NASA's reliance on Russia for astronaut transport.

China, Zhurong on course for historic journey. If the Chinese Rover touches down safely on the red planet and works as planned, the Tianwen 1 rover will be the sixth such vehicle deployed on Mars, following five predecessors launched by the United States.

If the semi-autonomous craft functions efficiently, it will work for at least three months and undertake comprehensive surveys of the planet.

The rover, recently named Zhurong after an ancient god of fire, is 1.85 meters high and weighs about 240 kilograms.

Musk should just buy SNL, load them all into a SpaceX rocket with a cardboard sign over the SpaceX logo that says "Safe Space", à la Wile E. Coyote, and they could be the first manned crew to land on the surface of the sun.

They'll never have to worry about being triggered again, and it will be the funniest episode SNL has had in 2 decades.

Researchers speculate strange 'puffball-like' rocks on Mars could be fungi

Researchers studying photos from NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars speculate that strange "puffball-like" rocks on the red planet might actually be fungi.

NASA might also do something, these spacecraft probe will go farther and faster than any before
After 27 years, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft beat Voyager 1’s record for being farthest from Earth
Arrokoth — named after a Native American word meaning "sky" in the Powhatan/Algonquian language — is the farthest object in the solar system we've ever visited. NASA's space probe New Horizons zipped past the tiny space rock in the Kuiper Belt.
At the time of the New Horizons flyby, the object had been nicknamed Ultima Thule
Photos of Arrokoth showed an odd shaped contact binary consisting of two lobes attached by a bright, narrow neck, the two lobes were likely once two objects that had merged in a slow collision.
New Horizons has been called "the fastest spacecraft ever launched"

Voyager spacecraft detects 'persistent hum' beyond our solar system

One of the Earth's longest-flying spacecraft has detected a "persistent hum" beyond our solar system, according to a new study.

NASA's Voyager 1 launched on September 5 1977, from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a Titan-Centaur rocket, just weeks after its sister craft, Voyager 2. Although they were initially designed to last five years, more than 43 years after they launched, the crafts are still sending back data as they explore interstellar space.

Instruments aboard Voyager 1, which has moved past the edge of the solar system, through the solar system's border with interstellar space, known as the heliopause, and into the interstellar medium, have detected the sounds of plasma waves, according to research published Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy.

A Cornell University-led team studied data transmitted from the spacecraft, sent from 14 billion miles away and discovered the interstellar gas emissions.

"It's very faint and monotone, because it is in a narrow frequency bandwidth," Stella Koch Ocker, a Cornell University doctoral student in astronomy, said in a statement. "We're detecting the faint, persistent hum of interstellar gas."

NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft flew by Jupiter in 1979, and by Saturn in 1980, before crossing the heliopause in August 2012.

1KIKI

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I remember the sci-fi story "Expedition Venus", which scared the crap out of me as a kid. The expedition brought back a grey mold that covered and killed everything, and survived normal methods to eradicate it (short of a nuclear bomb) ... because it was able to survive where it came from, which was much worse than anything humans could throw at it. In one scene, people in space suits went to visit an area completely covered by the mold, and someone pointed out an area that seemed to be moving. It turned out to be a dog, still barely alive, taking a few mindless steps, that scratched feebly at its side, then collapsed.

One can also take a lesson from the ISS that's growing stuff EVERYwhere, even between the inner and outer panes of glass. How'd mold get THERE?

Even something as relatively complicated as a water bear (tardigrade) can survive extended periods exposed to naked space.

My biggest fear is that we haven't properly decontaminated our ships that we're landing-on- and crashing-into- other planets. Aside from potentially killing-off any endogenous life forms, biological contaminants are exposed to extreme environments - like the hard radiation on Mars - that could mutate them in dangerous and unpredictable ways. Unless of course you think 'who WOULDN'T want an earthbound life form mutated to survive everything that could possibly kill it, brought back to earth?'.

One of my former coworkers did his graduate work at JPL on developing a utility for Mars-bound craft that can detect water in soil. And I'm sure there are other element-identifying and life-detecting tools on board. It seems like it should be possible to stop the crafts and turn them back on their own tracks to test these things and end the mystery.

illionaire_to_space_999.html

The Russian space agency announced the film project after NASA confirmed last year it was teaming up with US action star Tom Cruise to make a movie on the ISS.
The Russian "space drama", whose working title is "Challenge," will feature popular Russian actress Yulia Peresild, 36, and Klim Shipenko, a 37-year-old US-educated director and actor, Roscosmos said.
They will have to undergo training, including tests on a centrifuge, parachute jumps and flights in zero gravity, starting no later than June 1.
A mockup of the Russian segment of the ISS will be used to prepare the film crew for their space adventure.

Life detected on Mars might have actually originated in NASA labs, according to an Ivy League scientist

NASA may have contaminated Mars with life, according to an Ivy League scientist.
Life discovered on the Red Planet might have "originated in NASA labs," said Christopher Mason.

Microbes can wreak havoc when they arrive at a new ecosystem, he wrote in a BBC article.

Bright Ejecta Reveals a Fresh Crater on Mars
https://www.universetoday.com/151214/bright-ejecta-reveals-a-fresh-cra

Meteors hit much harder on Mars than they do on the Earth. Lack of atmosphere obviously contributes to that, but its proximity to the asteroid belt also makes the red planet a more likely target for some gravitationally disturbed rock to run into. Now that we have a satellite infrastructure consistently monitoring Mars, we are able to capture the aftermath of what happens when it is pummeled by space debris, and the results can be dramatic.

Physicists break the speed of light using plasma in new experiment

This time, researchers from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and the University of Rochester in New York have managed it inside hot swarms of charged particles, fine-tuning the speed of light waves within plasma to anywhere from around one-tenth of light's usual vacuum speed to more than 30 percent faster.

Then & Now: Mercury Unmasked

China launched a dark matter particle explorer (DAMPE) satellite to observe the direction, energy and electric charge of high-energy particles in space in search of dark matter.
Results reported today by a China-led space science mission provide a tantalizing hint—but not firm evidence—for dark matter. Perhaps more significantly, the first observational data produced by China’s first mission dedicated to astrophysics shows that the country is set to become a force in space science, says David Spergel, an astrophysicist at Princeton University. China is now "making significant contributions to astrophysics and space science," he says.

http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2021-05/19/c_139956745.htm
Scientists have publicized the latest scientific outcomes obtained by China's Dark Matter Particle Explorer, nicknamed "Wukong" or "Monkey King," which could shed light on the existence of an unknown source of cosmic rays.

Astronaut Chris Hadfield calls alien UFO hype 'foolishness'

"Obviously, I've seen countless things in the sky that I don't understand," Hadfield, a former pilot for the Royal Canadian Air Force, said during a CBC Radio call-in show. "But to see something in the sky that you don't understand and then to immediately conclude that it's intelligent life from another solar system is the height of foolishness and lack of logic."

We all know aliens aren't real.

The lizard people are though. They live in the center of the flat, hollow earth. It's where Hilary Clinton goes when she's not in the public spotlight wearing her skin mask.
