Some residents and business owners refused to rely on the government to rebuild roads destroyed by massive flooding. They were tired of the run around and cutbacks. They built an estimated $4 million road with donated time and resources.

Yeah, people can kick ass some times. They make me proud.

Wow, awesomeness.

Alas, I proposed it as an alternative when I was prettymuch the entirety of my former towns city council, and was blasted immediately by state regulators who would have arrested us for doing so without all the proper permits (read: bribes) and being unlicensed (read: graft) and so on and so forth.

Which is why repaving one mile of street costs over $600,000.00 USD.

Many "safety" regulations are actually just barriers to entry and blockades against competition, it's one thing that's strangled so many competitors against the big three, and compliance costs didn't do THEM no favors in the end neither.

Hail to the Hawaiians for having more sense!

I'm overdue for an Hawaiian trip. When I go back, I'll make sure to stop by that particular park and congratulate the nearby residents.

Very cool article. THAT's what I call a free market solution.
