Hello all,

I wrote this long-winded statement before Geezer declared a closeout. I hope you don't mind if I post it.

I'd like to reiterate what brought me to post this thread.

Signy asked me to 'track' Geezer's posts, and look for a pattern. The problem wasn't the word 'track'. He could have said, equally, 'Read Geezer's posts, and you'll see a pattern.'

I performed a cursory sampling of a dozen posts, and found nothing unnusual. I asked Signy what I should be looking for, and he said, 'You'll know it when you see it.'

That seemed to me a rather oblique approach. I asked myself, "Why would someone tell me to study someone's posts for 'patterns?' Are they trying to say something about this person? If so, why not just say it?"

I thought to myself, what if Hero had posted something like, "Hey Anthony, read all of Rue's posts, and I'm sure you'll be able to pick up a pattern." And I respond, "What pattern is that, Hero?" And he says, "Oh, you'll know it when you see it."

And I thought to myself, that just doesn't *feel* right. Why wouldn't Hero just say what he means about Rue? Why wouldn't Signy just say what he means about Geezer?

So I promised to consult the Fireflyfans community, and I posted this thread. And it was not at all surprising to see a lot of people get excited about it. It didn't feel right to them, either.

Apparently, Signy meant nothing derogatory. He says he wanted me to be sure to pick up the subtle nuances of Geezer's logic, which he says are less verbally bombastic than other posts on this forum. But this ordinary, almost complimentary statement was phrased in such a way as to feel uncomfortable. Track Geezer? Detect Patterns? Ick.

But this is really a small piece of a larger purpose. And that is this: I think we here on this board use words, phrases, and attitudes in our communication that do not properly convey our ideas. We color what we say with bad paint, and the resulting color display distracts everyone from our purpose.

Rue inadvertently made my point by being crass and insulting towards me instead of merely addressing her argument directly. I don't know if Rue really thinks I'm an idiot. I hope not. If she does, then I guess she firmly conveyed her opinions in a direct fashion. But if she really meant to say "Anthony, I think you're taking Signy's choice of words out of context," then that would have been a better thing to say.

I would love to see a change in the way we argue points here on Fireflyfans. I'd love to see people state their positions plainly, without being obtuse or insulting. I'd love to see people pause and at least try to understand other people's points of view, even if they don't agree with them. I'd love people's arguments to be assessed independent of their source. That means if a 'Conservative' says something to a 'Liberal', The Liberal's first thought shouldn't be, "Oh, well, he's a Conservative" but rather, "Hmm... Is there any validity to that argument or point of view?"

Our desire to pigeonhole people, categorize their philosophies, and label them, has really begun to interfere with our ability to relate to one another.

So I'm shooting for Honesty in Communication, and Respect for All.

After all, being an American gives us the right to be rude, but being creatures of conscience gives us the responsibility to be better.

In my opinion.
