2023 election recap: Virginia Democrats block GOP trifecta and takeaways from Hampton Roads

Virginia Democrats who campaigned on protecting abortion rights swept Tuesday’s legislative elections, retaking full control of the General Assembly after two years of divided power.

The outcome is a sharp loss for Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who exerted a great deal of energy, money and political capital on an effort to secure a GOP trifecta.

There is no bigger issue on the plate than Trump’s plans. He has totalitarian designs for mass political trials. The press and his political opponents, including Joe Biden, should escalate their criticism of him pronto to make it the leading political issue. Biden can’t pretend to be an advocate of constitutional self-governance unless he presses Trump hard here.

Trump, ever the master of evasion, can’t be allowed to fudge who he intends to prosecute nor should we allow him to make such threats without describing in detail what crimes he thinks have been committed and what evidence exists. The same questions should be directed at Trump supporters and his donors. Trump, after all, has put them on notice, too, with his plans. They are as complicit in the plot to throttle our civil liberties as Trump is.

Trump claims that his current promises of prosecution are a matter of payback. Prosecutors in Georgia and New York and in the federal government prosecuted him for what he considers political reasons, so he thinks that frees him to return the favor to his foes. But the Trump equation doesn’t balance. Remember, it was his style to call for the jailing of his foes long before any indictment landed on his doorstep. Also, Trump’s alleged crimes have been named, delineated with supporting evidence, and accepted for trial by an independent judiciary. Any counter-claim by Trump, such as the recent one where he insisted he’s an American Nelson Mandela is a complete fantasy.

Again, we’ve been warned. Trump doesn’t just want to be president. He wants to be prosecutor, judge, jury and jailer, too. Why doesn’t he just come clean and announce his campaign for dictator?

'Nothing's going to get fixed': Right-winger despairs as Trump crushes GOP election hopes

Conservative Erick Erickson found himself in a seeming state of despair on Wednesday after watching the Republican Party suffer a new round of stinging defeats in off-year elections, which are coming despite the fact that President Joe Biden suffers from continuously dismal approval ratings.

Writing on Twitter, Erickson pinned the party's biggest problem as its total reliance on Trump as its political champion despite the fact that the GOP lost the 2018 midterm elections and the 2020 presidential election, while also suffering from a massively disappointing 2022 midterm election that saw Republicans retake the House of Representatives by a very slim margin.

They were meaningless, Ted. The only people surprised at how yesterday turned out are idiots on either side.

Here's what I wrote, specifically to you on November 6th:

I don't want to hear a single word out of you about the off-year elections tomorrow. I knew that's exactly how yesterday's elections were going to turn out.

Because I'm not an idiot.

Once again I was right. Imagine that, huh?

To Defeat Anti-Abortion “Moderation”, Mobilize Fear

Republicans won’t stop at a 15-week ban.

By Judith Levine | November 9, 2023, 3:55 p.m.

https://theintercept.com/2023/11/09/anti-abortion-republicans-15-weeks/

Since the Supreme Court demolished the right to abortion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization last June, the GOP has been trying to douse the fury of reproductive justice defenders and dam the torrent of their victories at the polls.

They’ve been failing.

At first, they banked their hopes on changing the subject, from the pesky question of women’s existential equality to the rising prices of gas and groceries. That hopey-changey stuff did not work out for them in the 2022 midterms. After that, Republicans turned to election interference, trying to subvert reproductive freedom initiatives by making it harder to amend state constitutions. In both Ohio and Arkansas, that tactic lost big.

Where they couldn’t stand in the way of steamrolling support for a pro-abortion measure, they returned to a time-honored tactic: lying — replacing the texts of proposed constitutional amendments on the ballots with their own, baldly inaccurate summaries. The ruse didn’t stop Ohio voters from enshrining abortion rights in their constitution by healthy margins this week. Missouri’s attorney general is trying the same trick in anticipation of a 2024 initiative. But advocates are fighting back, and he looks weak.

So, after 18 months of watching its take-no-prisoners politics repudiated at the polls, the anti-abortion movement has adopted a new look: “moderation.” The centerpiece of this strategy is a “limit” on terminations after 15 weeks’ gestation, which proponents describe as “reasonable” and “commonsense.”

The first test of anti-abortion neo-moderation was in Virginia this week. Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin campaigned hard for his party members, leading his pitch with a “15-week bill.” His star candidate — and perhaps the most persuasive propagandist of this approach, after presidential contender Nikki Haley — was three-term state Sen. Siobhan Dunnavant. “Abortion should remain legal up to 15 weeks. After 15 weeks there should be reasonable exceptions, for rape, incest, life of the mother, and severe fetal anomalies,” said the OB-GYN and mom in a campaign ad. Claiming (falsely) that her state “allows for abortion up to the moment of birth,” she called current policy “unnecessary, extreme, and heartbreaking.” The Washington Post characterized Dunnavant’s approach as “a nuanced stance on a polarizing topic.” But, it turned out, not a convincing one.

Youngkin’s goal was to flip the Democrat-controlled Senate and, with an all-red statehouse, pass a conservative agenda that would set him up as Donald Trump’s 2028 heir apparent. Instead, the lower house flipped blue, and the Dems held the Senate — thanks, in part, to Dunnavant’s loss. In a term-limited seat, Youngkin is a lame duck. And neo-moderation took a hit.

Despite the setback in Virginia, the GOP is unlikely to ditch this strategy. National-level candidates are adopting it, following the lead of the influential Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, whose president, Marjorie Dannenfelser, has vowed that SBA will “oppose any presidential candidate who refuses to embrace at a minimum a 15-week national standard to stop painful late-term abortions while allowing states to enact further protections.”

In the second Republican presidential primary debate, in September, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis endorsed the 15-week federal limit. In the third, on November 8, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott did too. Haley has said she’d sign one but has also hedged, citing the unlikelihood of such a bill getting through Congress. In the debate she espoused, as usual, “consensus.” The next day, one New York Times commentator called her “sensible and realistic on abortion.” Another thought Haley’s stance would “connect with both primary and swing voters.”

Of course, not everyone in the movement is on board. Abortion abolitionists such as Students for Life of America and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul will accept nothing less than constitutional rights for every fertilized egg. National Right to Life Committee President Carol Tobias has called the 15-week limit a “mistake,” because it would permit most abortions, which occur before that time.

Given the sensitivities of the anti-abortion base, it’s not surprising that many candidates are remaining as vague as possible. On ABC News, for instance, Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., spoke of a “middle ground,” which she defined as “some sort of gestational limits, not at nine months but somewhere in the middle.”

Against this thrust from the right, the left has not yet parried strategically. So far two responses have dominated. One is simply to assert that 15 weeks is not a limit or a standard. “Now they’re pushing for a 15-week ‘standard’ on abortion — which, to be clear, would be a ban,” wrote Jessica Valenti in the New York Times. “A ban is a ban,” said Schuyler VanValkenburg, Dunnavant’s Democratic opponent in Virginia, “and she’s proposing a ban.”

The other is to call the 15-week proposals undemocratic, because Americans show high levels of support for abortion in all or most cases. In an editorial condemning a North Carolina law shortening the period of legal abortion from 20 weeks’ gestation to 12, the Charlotte Observer referred to polls finding majority support in the state for the rights the old law protected. The ban’s partisans call it “mainstream,” said the Observer, but it “is anything but.”

These arguments have some strengths. Indeed, a 15-week limit does ban abortions after 15 weeks, which are now legal, for instance, in Virginia. A federal 15-week limit would slash abortion rights in the 24 states that have either left legal abortion in place or succeeded in protecting or expanding those rights. In another interview, VanValkenburg clarified: “If something’s legal and then it becomes illegal, it’s a ban.”

Majorities do support abortion in all or most cases, and that support has reached record highs since Dobbs, including in red states. But here’s the rub: The “most cases” that two-thirds of Americans support fall in the first trimester — before 12 weeks. Might this squishy pro-choice bloc look at a federal 15-week limit as a step in the right direction — a law protecting some abortion rights, when we’ve never had a federal law explicitly protecting any?

Denying America’s nuanced — and yes, moderate — views on abortion does not magically make them more pro-abortion. Calling a law that doesn’t ban all abortions a ban is not effective argument. Facing a suddenly warm and fuzzy-looking opponent, how should defenders of reproductive justice proceed?

Seize the enemy’s most reliable weapon: fear.

What’s moved voters is not the exhortations of our side but the viciousness of theirs.

The purpose of moderation is to calm. If total bans, election interference, and transparent lies are fire, the 15-week limit is aloe. If you can’t win the other side over, you can soothe the middle into inaction. With electoral margins so slim, you don’t need many middle-of-the-roaders to roll over and go back to sleep on Election Day.

But if moderation calms, fear mobilizes. In fact, what’s moved voters thus far is not the exhortations of our side but the viciousness of theirs. Republicans have always been better at deploying fear than Democrats. The joke on them is that Americans have been pushed, trembling in fear, to the left.

Our job is to wake up the sleepy middle by scaring the bejesus out of them.

The first task is to disarm the disarming: expose the currently moderate as only temporarily moderate.

Dunnavant has lovely bedside manner. But her record belies the sweetness. NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia gave her 0 percent ratings in her first two terms, 25 percent in the third, and 17 percent in 2022. If she’d won, there’s no knowing what she’d have supported.

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America is leading the charge on 15 weeks. But it is patently speaking to this moment. Its website declares that it “exists to end abortion” and that “every human life begins at conception.” Where does a 15-week limit fit in that vision? The organization’s dishonesty and expediency will attract and encourage more dishonesty and expediency. Case in point: Ron DeSantis. A month before he signed onto SBA’s pledge, he averred that abortion policy should be left to the states. To cover his bases, he signed two different bans in Florida: in April, six weeks; in September, 15.

Another peril to publicize is the one blowing from Washington. If the neo-moderates pull in enough middle-of-the-road voters in national elections, the gusts will build to a Category 5 hurricane. Not least of the coming destruction: A Republican Senate and White House will finish filling the federal bench with extreme right-wing judges, who hold lifetime appointments.

Anti-abortion activists, including many of these judges, never intended to stop at states’ rights to decide on abortion. Federalism was only a way station in the quest for the true grail, a nationwide ban superseding all state legal frameworks. Hence, the challenge in Texas federal courts to the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the abortion drug mifepristone. Justice Samuel Alito’s majority opinion in Dobbs was the first brick in an edifice of precedent that could uphold the federal criminalization of abortion. If the court hears the FDA case, a ruling in the challengers’ favor might be the next.

Remember that the subject of Dobbs was Mississippi’s 15-week ban. But Mississippi was not defending a 15-week ban. Two weeks after the ruling freed it to do so, the state criminalized all abortion.

These arguments are mostly rational. They’re meant to invoke fear by unmasking the truth, exposing the pussycat’s claws. The left trusts reason more than emotion; the abortion rights movement has used facts to counter the other side’s lies, even as facts lose their persuasive potency. Truth is still good political discourse. But politics are 90 percent emotional.

The right’s advantage in stirring political emotion is the willingness to lie. When there’s not enough to fear (or the wrong things are fearsome, like the climate crisis), the right invents monsters: the Mexican rapist, the woke gender ideologue or critical race theorist, the abortion profiteer. The beauty of an imaginary opponent is that it can morph and multiply to fulfill any brief.

Many on the left consider the political use of fear to be intrinsically dishonest and generative only of division and violence. They see instrumentalizing fear as fearmongering, the antithesis of progressive values, including the value of truth. But right now, both truth and fear are on our side. In case you haven’t noticed, reality is terrifying.

The most terrible of realities — the one that has driven millions to the polls to vote to protect reproductive rights — is the permanent loss of bodily freedom. And that is the post-Roe endgame: the enshrinement of fetal personhood, which is the denial of the personhood of already born pregnant people.

If bodily autonomy is a fundamental right, it is nonnegotiable.

Roe had its flaws, starting with the wobbly foundation on privacy rather than freedom. But the ruling changed the status of the pregnant and potentially pregnant in more than one monumental way. “While we conventionally think of Roe as the decision that defined the constitutional right to not be pregnant, it also delineated — and was in fact the first articulation of — rights a woman has while pregnant,” wrote Lynn Paltrow, Lisa Harris, and Mary Faith Marshall in the American Journal of Bioethics. That lasted 50 years.

In a short 18 months, their predictions about looming abortion bans have come hideously true: “Anyone who becomes pregnant … will become newly vulnerable to legal surveillance, civil detentions, forced interventions, and criminal prosecution.” As they warned, the red states have created “a new class of persons for whom fundamental constitutional rights don’t apply.”

Dobbs turned 25 million women of reproductive age into second-class citizens. But coast-to-coast criminalization will make of every uterus-bearing person what the philosopher Giorgio Agamben called a “margizen,” a nominally legal citizen of a nation-state, who lives both inside society and outside it. The margizen — the prisoner, the homeless person, the migrant — exists in a “state of exception,” their rights suspended until such time as full social and legal citizenship can be attained. It may never be attained.

Those who have been denied abortions, particularly when they or their fetuses are sick or dying, already have felt themselves slip from the inside to the outside. Those who live within the historical legacies of unfreedom and exclusion have felt it before, and the Dobbs decision reanimates that feeling. If you have not been there yet, imagining yourself or your daughter or partner in that place should be enough to displace comfort with legitimate anxiety. Enough to wake the complacent.

Fifteen weeks is not a step in the right direction. It is a step rightward, and downward. But even to be drawn into haggling over six weeks or 15, 26, or 40 sets us plunging. If bodily autonomy is a fundamental right, it is nonnegotiable. No compromise can be reached. From 15 weeks the distance down is immeasurable, and of that we should all be very afraid.

Yeah, Trump.

Outright say that you personally will enshrine the rights of sluts to murder babies into law.

The country is going down the shit tubes. There's no reason to risk 4 more years of what we've collectively been going through to appease some bible bouncer idiots.

Let's cut this one off immediately before it gains any more traction. It's the ONLY issue in 2023 that the Democratic Party has going for it.

That's not surprising. You also believe that the economy is doing great, that crime isn't a problem in this country and that the border is secure.

The reality is, you are behind Trump in the polls.

Whether you approve or not of Biden when asked in a phone call is not the same as whether you will vote for nutty Trump. And Trump is nuts:

The Time Trump Told Boy Scouts About Sexy Yacht Parties

President Trump’s remarks at the 2017 National Scout Jamboree will be etched in my memory for all eternity a) because I spent hours transcribing them for this publication and b) because they were weird as hell. Now this seems a bit quaint, but at the time few suspected that a presidential address to the roughly 40,000 people gathered in West Virginia to spend “10 days hiking, biking, camping and giving back to local communities” might go awry. After all, eight former presidents had addressed the event without incident. Thus, when President Trump regaled the youngsters with a 35-minute tirade about the “dishonest people” who doubted he could win in 2016, his tax repatriation plan, and why our nation’s capital is a “cesspool,” I found myself furiously typing throughout the night, rewinding the CSPAN footage again and again, so I could capture the most inappropriate moments.

But if you are as crazy as Trump is, you won't find anything he says, does, or even plans to do as sufficiently crazy to disqualify him to be President.

It's hilarious reading this and seeing you believe it when this is exactly what the Democratic Party has been doing to its political opponents for the last 7 years.

Did you hear that Eric Adams, the Democratic Mayor of New York just got his office raided by the FBI?

Funny coincidence, innit?

Coming right off the heels of Adams calling out the Biden* administration on the lax border and turning down their $1.4 Billion bribe to shut him up before the election.

You see what Biden*'s Administration does, Ted? The exact same thing you're claiming that Trump would do.

And yeah. I'm sure Eric Adams DID get campaign contributions from Turkey that they can nail him with. But the problem here is the uneven hand of justice. I'd be willing to wager that EVERY politician with any real power from either political side gets campaign contributions from foreign interests to one degree or another.

Eric Adams is bringing up a lot of unfortunate questions and making the media ask a lot of unfortunate questions only one year before the election. Worse for Biden*'s reelection chances is that Eric Adams is a black guy that they can't just gag via traditional means they gag white politicians with. Eric Adams has to go, so the Democrat Machine is going to go nuclear on one of its own to bring him down.

NY Magazine: The 2024 Polls Agree: Trump Has a Significant Lead Over Biden

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/the-2024-polls-agree-trump-has
-a-significant-lead-over-biden/ar-AA1jJqdR

Quote:

Based on two sets of polls from Bloomberg/Morning Consult and one each from the New York Times/Siena and from Emerson, it’s pretty clear Donald Trump has a lead over Joe Biden in the majority of key 2024 battleground states. Separate polling also shows him moving into a small lead in the national popular vote (which he lost by 2.1 percent in 2016 and 4.5 percent in 2020). Instead of arguing over the reliability of this or that poll or pollster, we can now begin to pay some attention to more reliable polling averages.
,

According to the RealClearPolitics averages, Trump leads Biden (in one-on-one matchups) by 3.7 percent in Arizona; by 5.5 percent in Georgia; by 1.0 percent in Michigan; by 4.0 percent in Nevada; and by 2.5 percent in Pennsylvania. Biden leads Trump by 0.7 percent in Wisconsin.
,

Bloomberg/Morning Consult’s latest battleground polls add in trial heats that include independent candidates Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cornel West. Even though Kennedy wins an average of 10 percent in these states, he barely affects the margins between the two major-party candidates, suggesting he is drawing support from them equally and/or from voters strongly alienated from both.
,

Meanwhile, polls of the national race show on average Trump now leading Biden by 1.1 percent (45.6 percent to 44.5 percent). Four-way polls with Kennedy and West listed as options give Trump an average lead of 2.7 percent (Trump: 39.2 percent; Biden: 36.5 percent; Kennedy: 15.3 percent; West: 3.8 percent).

What he doesn't mention in the article is that Biden* was leading Trump by 7 points in the aggregate, barely won it by 3 points in reality, and only won the battleground states he's polling terribly in by tens of thousands of votes in 2020.

How are those court cases going, Ted?

Not very well, I suspect, if your lying legacy Media is going to start scaremongering that the Trump administration is going to jail its political opponents while the Biden* administration has been doing just that since Joe* was inaugurated.

Donald Trump is a confidence man and an unrepentant liar. Why do so many American support him?

Donald Trump convinced banks that he had assets worth ten, twenty, sometimes more than fifty times their real value as was revealed in court this week. The self-proclaimed “king of debt” then used his borrowed money to support a lifestyle that reinforced everybody’s belief that he was truly rich.

After American banks refused to lend Trump money, he and his good friend Jeffrey Epstein who hanged himself turned to Deutsche Bank and managed to extract over $2 billion from that institution with the help of William Broeksmit, Thomas Bowers, and Justin Kennedy.

Broeksmit hanged himself in 2014, leaving a suicide note and paperwork tying him to the bank’s unit accused of laundering some $10 billion of Russian oligarch money along with over $400 million in questionable loans to Trump.

As stories about Trump’s finances began hitting the media in 2019, Tom Bowers (55 years old), who signed off on Trump’s loans, also hanged himself.

Justin Kennedy (unknown why he didn't hang himself) worked for Deutsche Bank from 1998 to 2009 and, according to the Finance Editor of The New York Times, David Enrich as reported by The Guardian’s Julian Borger:

“Drawn to Trump’s risk-taking and glamour, he [Kennedy] became a Trump confidant, sitting with the real estate impresario at the US Open tennis or in Manhattan nightclubs, and chaperoning huge loans to finance Trump’s real estate spending sprees.”

Kennedy was also the son of US Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy who, when apparently asked by Trump to resign to make room for Brett Kavanaugh, mysteriously complied and stepped away from one of the most powerful positions in America.

Without the help of these three men, Trump would almost certainly have ended up broke and destitute. He’d been sued thousands of times for nonpayment of his debts and was well known to New Yorkers as a hustler and scam artist with a long string of failed businesses behind him.

In fact, by the time of his bankruptcies in the 1990s he had squandered almost all the roughly half-billion dollars he inherited from his father and stole from his brother
, nephews, and nieces (as Mary Trump will tell you) before being rescued by mobbed-up Russian oligarchs looking to launder ill-gotten gains via real estate.

— Trump ridiculed Obama for occasionally playing a round of golf, saying he’d be so busy as president that he’d never take that kind of time off. Instead, he billed you for over $135 million for the 250+ times he visited his own golf clubs.

— He said he’d increase economic growth by four percent, a number America hadn’t seen since the 1960s. Instead, like Herbert Hoover, he left office with fewer jobs than when he entered.

— He repeatedly promised an infrastructure plan: every week for months, it seemed, was “infrastructure week.” But it never happened.

— Trump promised to “fight for the dignity of women and mothers.” Instead he’s been convicted of raping E. Jean Caroll and more than 20 other women claim he did the same to them. And he brags about packing the Supreme Court to overturn abortion rights in America.

Any speech or press conference by Trump was filled with exaggerations and lies: over 30,000 of his falsehoods while in office were compiled into a book. Trump’s persistent lies have become so common that the media no longer reports on them.

Trump cheated on and lied to each of his three wives, lied on his taxes, lied to his bankers and insurance companies, and lied to the American people.

And yet, he’s still held in the tight embrace of Republicans nationwide. Why?

One theory is that the people who support him know he’s a liar and a fraud and don’t care, so long as he promises to hurt those they mutually hate: Black people, Hispanics, Muslims, the queer community, uppity women, academics, and liberals.

It’s a variation on the old saying, “He may be an SOB, but at least he’s my SOB.” People who are motivated by fear and hate — like much of the Republican base — aren’t usually all that concerned with what they consider the nuances of honesty and integrity.

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump
In honor of our great Veterans on Veteran's Day, we pledge to you that we will root out the Communists, Marxists, Fascists, and Radical Left Thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our Country, lie, steal, and cheat on Elections, and will do anything possible, whether legally or illegally, to destroy America, and the American Dream. The threat from outside forces is far less sinister, dangerous, and grave, than the threat from within. Despite the hatred and anger of the Radical Left Lunatics who want to destroy our Country, we will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

He wasn't convicted of anything. He didn't lose any criminal trial. He (partially) lost a civil trial with a Clinton appointed judge and a packed anti-Trump jury who was given full anonymity.

As for your "rape" allegation, even the packed anti-Trump Leftist jury given full anonymity flat out said that Trump didn't rape Carroll:

Quote:

The jury reached a unanimous decision on May 9, after deliberating for less than three hours. Considering the preponderance of the evidence, the jury delivered a verdict that first stated that Carroll had not proven that Trump raped her, and next stated that Carroll did prove that Trump had sexually abused her, and also stated that Trump defamed Carroll with false statements made with actual malice in the October 2022 Truth Social post; thus the jury awarded Carroll a total of $5 million in damages from Trump

Based simply on this extreme lie we can throw out anything that Thom Hartmann has to say about Trump since he has zero integrity, and he continues to prove time and time again that he has no qualms about lying to and propagandizing his idiot base.

Trump’s lawyer, Joseph Tacopina, shook hands with Carroll and hugged her lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, after the verdict was announced. Outside the courthouse, he told reporters the jury’s rejection of the rape claim while finding Trump responsible for sexual abuse was “perplexing” and “strange. Part of me was obviously very happy that Donald Trump was not branded a rapist,” he said. What did Trump say? Trump, 76, denied it, saying he never encountered Carroll at the store and did not know her. The jury disbelieved Trump.

Yeah. I know what happened.

Apparently you do as well. That didn't stop you from posting Thom Hartmann's lie about it though, did it?

There's no proof that he ever met Carroll. The hand-picked Liberal jury under a Clinton appointed, Trump-hating judge made a decision to reward her with money. It was not a criminal case, and Trump is not a convicted rapist as liar Thom Hartmann just claimed he was, and you quoted.

If I were Trump, and if I were aware of Thom Hartmann putting it in print that I was a convicted rapist when it weren't true, I'd be dragging his ass into court right now for libel. Maybe when he has more free time Trump can have his lawyers show liar and libelist Thom Hartmann what rape really feels like.

Hope you got some KY jelly, Thom.

Anyhow... This will be appealed and overturned and Trump will not pay her a dime.

Inside Mike Johnson’s Ties to a Far-Right Movement to Gut the Constitution

The new House speaker has longstanding ties to the evangelical inspired Convention of States cause.

As the interregnum without a speaker of the House came to an end last month, people from across the political spectrum came together, in a rare show of unity, to ask a single question: Who in the world is Mike Johnson? But one group of conservative evangelicals with a radical cause immediately recognized the new speaker’s name.

For the last 10 years, the “Convention of States” movement has sought to remake the Constitution and force a tea party vision of the framers’ intent upon America. This group wants to wholesale rewrite wide swaths of the U.S. Constitution in one fell swoop. In the process, they hope to do away with regulatory agencies like the FDA and the CDC, virtually eliminate the federal government’s ability to borrow money, and empower state legislatures to override federal law.

As far-fetched as this idea might sound, the movement is gaining traction — and now, it believes, it has a friend in the speaker of the House.

“Speaker Mike Johnson has long been a supporter of Convention of States,” Mark Meckler, co-founder of Convention of States Action (COSA), told me when I asked about Johnson’s ascension. “It shows that the conservative movement in America is united around COS and recognizes the need to rein in an out-of-control federal government which will never restrain itself.”

What is the Convention of States? Article V of the Constitution provides a never used path to revise the Constitution: If two-thirds of the states petition Congress, it must call a constitutional convention, where multiple amendments could be proposed at the same time. The Constitution does not specify how to select delegates from states to this convention, provides no limit on the scope of such a convention, and offers no guidance on how the convention would ratify these new amendments.

“A convention likely cannot be limited at all by Congress or the states,” Russ Feingold — legal professor, former Wisconsin senator and current president of the American Constitution Society — wrote with Peter Prindiville in The Constitution in Jeopardy.

According to the mainstream legal opinion, nothing prevents a “runaway convention” scenario. An Article V convention could rewrite any part of the Constitution — including the part that requires the approval of three-fourths of the states to change it. A second Constitutional convention could therefore become a repeat of the first: One that completely restructures the U.S. government, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights according to rules they could make up as they go along.

In August, COSA chose delegates from 49 states (Rhode Island, which skipped the 1787 convention, sat this one out as well) to convene in — where else? — the historical reenactment village of Colonial Williamsburg for a Convention of States simulation. After three days of debate, the delegates emerged with six proposed amendments that would, among other things, make it nearly impossible for the federal government to borrow money, tighten the commerce clause in a way that would eliminate most federal regulatory bodies, and insert a nullification clause that would allow a simple majority of state legislatures to overrule any federal law or regulation. Such amendments, if passed, would make it impossible to fund Social Security, eliminate agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Education, and make federal governance virtually impossible.

Pretending to pass Constitutional amendments in a building surrounded by people in colonial garb may sound like the punchline of a joke, but many experts do not find it funny. Anybody that can ignore this kind of training and work by the right is not learning the lessons of recent history.

Over the weekend, Donald Trump continued with his carelessness about the risk of provoking more violence, laughing and joking about the attack on Paul Pelosi and saying things like, “the only terror we had was Nancy Pelosi,” and calling her a “crazed lunatic.” Trump asked the crowd, “what the hell was going on with her husband? Let’s not ask,” before imitating the kind of comment lawyers make in courtrooms by saying dramatically with his arms raised, “I’ll withdraw the statement.” (He meant I’ll withdraw the “question;” apparently, he didn’t pay close enough attention in the courtroom.) Trump went on to “joke” that the Pelosis had a wall around their house, before laughingly saying, “It didn’t work very well.” That, friends, is the Republican Party’s leading contender to be president in 2024.

Frogs Boiled: What Trump is Planning for a Second Term
Joyce Vance | Nov 8, 2023

Democrats need to take on an issue many would rather avoid: Donald Trump and the future of democracy if he’s re-elected. It may seem safer to stick to traditional kitchen table issues — don’t poke the bear — but it’s time to put the most important cards down on the table and have a serious conversation with the American people about what Donald Trump intends to do if he wins again. The writing on the wall is clear. But far too many people remain unaware of Trump’s 2025 plan, or they don’t take it seriously.

We all know the story about Ben Franklin emerging from the Constitutional Convention and telling a woman who asked what type of government they’d created, “a Republic, if you can keep it.” The 2024 election is the moment where we find out if we can. If Trump wins in 2024, we lose the Republic. That’s not drama, and that’s not overstatement. That’s what Trump is promising.

Trump and his allies have begun mapping out specific plans for using the federal government to punish critics and opponents should he win a second term, with the former president naming individuals he wants to investigate or prosecute and his associates drafting plans to invoke the Insurrection Act on his first day in office to allow him to deploy the military against civil demonstrations.

It sounds positively Stalinist. But, despite the cautionary tale of Trump’s first term in office, it garnered little attention. Project 2025 is the official name for the plan, which is reportedly being run out of the conservative Heritage Foundation.
https://www.google.com/search?q=Project+2025

Among the ideas Trump and his allies have floated:

• Have DOJ investigate former Trump administration officials and allies who have become critics of the former president

• Prosecute DOJ and FBI officials

• End the separation between the White House and DOJ that prevents presidents from using prosecutions as a tool for political advantage or personal revenge

It’s the stuff of banana republics. It’s a menu for the end of democracy.

You can watch Trump on a twitter video doing his Nazi thing:

Trump: We had no terror during my administration. The only terror we had was Nancy Pelosi. Crazed lunatic. What the hell was going on with her husband? Let’s not ask. She had a wall around her house. *laughs* It didn’t work very well.

2:52 PM · Nov 11, 2023

Later this week, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, is expected to testify at the criminal trial of David DePape, the man who viciously attacked him with a hammer. DePape had planned to attack Speaker Pelosi, who was not at home. In opening statements, prosecutors said they will show that DePape had a list of Democratic officials he planned to attack, including California Representative Adam Schiff and California Governor Gavin Newsom.

DePape’s lawyer told the jury she wouldn’t dispute the attack. Instead, she planned to show that her client believed scores of crazy conspiracy theories and thought he was fighting child abuse and corruption. DePape, a Trump supporter, bought into a whole host of QAnon conspiracy theories. The charges against him are assault and kidnapping, and the apparent defense strategy is to dispute whether the DePape intended to prevent Nancy Pelosi from carrying out her official duties, which is an element of the federal kidnapping charge against him.

The defense will have an uphill battle establishing even that limited defense. In their opening statement, prosecutors played a tape recording of a jailhouse call DePape made to a reporter. “I have an important message for everyone in America: You’re welcome,” DePape said. “I would also like to apologize. ... I’m so sorry I couldn’t get more of them.” He said he should have gone to Pelosi’s home more prepared.

A Trump campaign spokesman defended the former president's use of the word "vermin" to describe his political enemies, calling critics "snowflakes" whose "entire existence will be crushed" if Trump wins in 2024.

Why it matters: Some historians have compared Trump's dehumanizing language — including his claim that undocumented immigrants are "poisoning the blood of our country" — to the rhetoric of fascist dictators like Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.

"[T]o call your opponent vermin, to dehumanize them, is to not only open the door, but to walk through the door toward the most ghastly kinds of crimes," presidential historian Jon Meacham said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."
"[T]hose who try to make that ridiculous assertion are clearly snowflakes grasping for anything because they are suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome and their entire existence will be crushed when President Trump returns to the White House," Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung told the Post in a statement.
Cheung later said he was referencing their "sad, miserable existence" instead of their "entire existence," the Post noted.

Driving the news: In a Veterans Day speech in New Hampshire on Saturday, Trump vowed to "root out the communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country that lie and steal and cheat on elections."

He then posted the same message on Truth Social, including the word "vermin" often used by Hitler and Mussolini to denigrate Jews and their political enemies.
Trump went on to say that "the threat from outside forces is far less sinister, dangerous and grave than the threat from within."

The big picture: Trump's increasingly violent rhetoric — calling for a U.S. military leader to be executed, mocking a near-fatal assault on a congressional spouse, urging police to shoot potential shoplifters — has become a staple of his brand as he faces the threat of conviction in four different criminal cases.

Trump has cast his prosecutions as politically motivated and vowed to exact revenge on his enemies . . .

Trump is not a Nazi. He is merely passionate to make America great again. See? I could be a Trump loyalist if I wanted to.

Trump Team Responds to Hitler Accusations by Proving Accusers Right

Donald Trump’s rhetoric is becoming more dictatorial with each passing day.

“Those who try to make that ridiculous assertion are clearly snowflakes grasping for anything because they are suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome and their entire existence will be crushed when President Trump returns to the White House,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung defended Trump’s comments.

Cheung later added that he meant to say their “sad, miserable existence” instead of their “entire existence.”

Cheung’s statement is a chilling example of just how extreme Trump has become. His team isn’t even trying to downplay or explain away his authoritarian tendencies. Instead, his team is leaning into it.

The Nazis have got an unrestrained plan to take over America. Once in power, you will never be able to vote them out. It is permanent.

Former President Trump's allies are pre-screening the ideologies of thousands of potential foot soldiers, as part of an unprecedented operation to centralize and expand his power at every level of the U.S. government if he wins in 2024, officials involved in the effort tell Axios.

Why it matters: Hundreds of people are spending tens of millions of dollars to install a pre-vetted, pro-Trump army of up to 54,000 loyalists across government to rip off the restraints imposed on the previous 46 presidents.

• The screening for ready-to-serve loyalists has already begun, driven in part by artificial intelligence from tech giant Oracle, contracted for the project.

• Social media histories are already being plumbed.

What’s happening: When Trump took office in 2017, he included many conventional Republicans in his Cabinet and key positions. Those officials often curtailed his behavior and power.

• Trump himself spends little time plotting governing plans. But he is well aware of a highly coordinated campaign to be ready to jam government offices with loyalists willing to stretch traditional boundaries.

If Trump were to win, thousands of Trump-first loyalists would be ready for legal, judicial, defense, regulatory and domestic policy jobs. His inner circle plans to purge anyone viewed as hostile to the hard-edged, authoritarian sounding plans he calls "Agenda 47."

• The people leading these efforts aren't figures like Rudy Giuliani. They're smart, experienced people, many with very unconventional and elastic views of presidential power and traditional rule of law.

Behind the scenes: The government-in-waiting is being orchestrated by the Heritage Foundation's well-funded Project 2025 which already has published a 920-page policy book from 400+ contributors.

Think of it as a transition team set in motion years in advance.

• Heritage president Kevin Roberts tells us his apparatus is "orders of magnitude" bigger than anything ever assembled for a party out of power.

• The policy series, "Mandate for Leadership," dates back to the 1980s. But Paul Dans, director of Project 2025, told us: "Never before has the entire movement ... banded together to construct a comprehensive plan to deconstruct the out-of-touch and weaponized administrative state."

Three weeks ago, Rep. Mike Johnson wrote a letter to his fellow Republicans saying that he was sure they could pass all 12 outstanding appropriations bills by.......this week. In the event, Republicans have passed zero appropriations bills.

The reason for this is the usual one: Hard-right members of the Freedom Caucus have stalled any progress unless they get the massive cuts they want. So now it's time to punt—again—and pass a continuing resolution to prevent a government shutdown. Unfortunately—well, take a guess:

On Tuesday, some of those same hard-line conservatives who moved to oust Mr. McCarthy vented their anger at Mr. Johnson. The House Freedom Caucus, a group of approximately three dozen hard-right lawmakers, announced that it would oppose the measure.

Johnson has now been backed into the same corner that got Kevin McCarthy fired: The only way to keep the government open is to pass a continuing resolution maintaining current spending levels with help from Democrats.

So now Republicans will have another couple of months to pass appropriations bills. Can they do it? Or will it be the same old story in January? Maybe this will be the first time ever that an entire year goes by without passing a budget — just a year's worth of continuing resolutions.

When Trump tells you he’s an authoritarian, believe him.

He’s talking like a fascist. He’s planning fascist policies. He’s staffing up with fascists.

In a country where democracy is basically a civic religion, politicians generally don’t announce their intention to attack it when running for office. But Donald Trump is openly campaigning on a platform of tearing democracy down.

Calling one’s opponents subhuman and vowing aggressive action against them is a hallmark of classical fascist rhetoric. Trump has used such language. He claimed immigrants were “poisoning the blood of our country.”

This incendiary language is backed by an incendiary policy agenda.

The Next Republican President Has a Plan to Ban Abortion Nationwide Without Congress

By Mary Ziegler | Nov 17, 2023

Voters may wonder if Trump will resurrect the Comstock Act, or if the Supreme Court will agree, or if a Trump Department of Justice will prioritize an attack on abortion. Progressives may be skeptical about the importance of a second Biden term when the president has sometimes avoided even saying the word abortion and when the prospect of federal abortion protections is far off. What is clear is that the architects of Project 2025 are confident that a second Trump term could be just as transformative for abortion rights as the first one was. Courtesy of Anthony Comstock, and regardless of whether Congress lifts a finger, an abortion ban is on the ballot — whether or not voters want one.

Joe Biden* only "beat" Trump by little over 3 points. It's been a while, but if I remember correctly, Hillary Clinton lost that match.

Trump is up on Biden* today by 1.3 points.

Punching Politicians and Trump’s Belligerence

Journalists shouldn’t shy away from linking the two.

Nov 16, 2023
https://plus.thebulwark.com/p/punching-politicians-and-trump-belligere
nce

When the 118th Congress got underway, one of the first actions of the new Republican majority in the House of Representatives was to remove the magnetometers that former Speaker Nancy Pelosi had had installed outside the House chamber following the January 6th attack.

After Tuesday’s events on Capitol Hill—when deposed House Speaker Kevin McCarthy allegedly sucker-elbowed a fellow Republican who called it “a clean shot to the kidneys” and Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) dared a witness in a Senate hearing to a fistfight—maybe it’s time to bring those magnetometers back.

Remember when, back in September, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) referred to Republican infighting as a “civil war” and everyone understood him to be speaking metaphorically? Maybe not so much.

Before Tuesday’s unhinged Republican behavior recedes from memory, it’s worth emphasizing one aspect of it that has been underappreciated in the press coverage: that it didn’t happen in a void, but rather fits into larger patterns in the world of Donald Trump.

Time and again, Trump has issued permission slips to those who practice violence. His fascination with the use of force, including by violent militias like the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, is well documented. Tuesday’s events can only really be understood in that larger context of Trump and violence.

But you’ll search in vain for a mention of Trump in most reporting about Tuesday. The main New York Times article gives room to an excusatory tweet from Mitch McConnell’s spokesman (“Today is another example of why Congress shouldn’t be in session for 5 weeks straight”) and a distracting statement from MAGA Matt Gaetz (Thanksgiving “will allow everybody to go home [and] cool off”) but doesn’t even mention Trump’s name. The same goes for CNN, PBS, ABC, and the Los Angeles Times.

At least the Washington Post made an effort to note a parallel for the violence in the American past, quoting Yale historian Joanne B. Freeman, author of The Field of Blood: Violence in Congress and the Road to the Civil War: “If no one speaks up, [violence] becomes representative of what that party stands for.”

The most infamous tale of deadly force on the Senate floor is the 1856 caning of anti-slavery Republican Senator Charles Sumner by Rep. Preston Brooks, a pro-slavery Democratic congressman from South Carolina. The cane was metal-tipped, and Brooks struck Sumner’s head from the back, nearly killing him.

This was all part of accelerating division in the years leading to full-blown national violence on an unprecedented scale. Now, as before, violence is showing up in the halls of Congress—except this time it follows years of Donald Trump lauding the use of force in remarks that often became memes.

Recall the 2016 campaign rally where, speaking of a protester, Trump told his audience he’d “like to punch him in the face”:

“You’re not allowed to punch back anymore. I love the old days. You know what they used to do to guys like that when they were in a place like this? They’d be carried out on a stretcher, folks.”

Then in August 2017, from the White House podium, Trump said about the violent Charlottesville “Unite Right Rally” that there were “very fine people on both sides.” One side included James Alex Fields, who drove his Dodge Challenger into counterdemonstrator Heather Heyer, killing her.

Fast-forward to mid-2020 when Trump said of post-George Floyd riots, “When the looting starts, the shooting starts,” and retweeted a supporter’s video that said, “The only good Democrat is a dead Democrat.”

No one can forget the January 6th “Mike Pence didn’t have the courage” tweet after Trump had learned that violence was surging at the Capitol. It was the time when the invaders were shouting, “Hang Mike Pence.”

Nor do we fail to remember Trump’s famous three hours of diddling while the Capitol filled with violence; only when police reinforcements were about to turn the tide did the then-president ask the mob to go home.

Then there’s Trump’s more recent social posting about Mark Milley, the retired chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: “In times gone by, the punishment would have been DEATH” for what Trump misrepresented Milley had done.

Last, let’s add Trump’s Hitler-channeling speech dehumanizing his foes as “vermin.” That, blogger Lucian Truscott IV wrote on Saturday, “is how it begins”—the violent roundups to the concentration camps. (General Dwight Eisenhower put Truscott’s grandfather in charge of relocating the liberated inmates of Dachau.)

ALL OF THESE TRUMPIAN MOMENTS — and countless others one could name — create an environment in which political violence becomes acceptable, and in which it’s okay to coldcock someone you don’t like in a Capitol hallway or to challenge an adversary to put up his dukes in a hearing room of what was once known as the world’s “greatest deliberative body.”

There is no reason to think we won’t see more such political pugnacity on the right as the 2024 campaign continues. Journalists should not be shy about connecting the dots between the vile words of Trump and the violent actions of his Republican followers. And the rest of us, remembering that normalizing small acts of political violence can create the climate for big ones, must keep calling out MAGA violence and those who are responsible for it.

Trump Wants to Use the Military Against His Enemies. The danger that this would pose to democracy cannot be overstated, but it can be averted. Congress Must Act.

Trump will invoke the Insurrection Act — a law that gives the president nearly unchecked powers to use the military as a domestic police force — on his first day in office. Unless Congress acts now to reform this dangerous and antiquated law, there’s little anyone can do to stop him.

As president, Trump displayed a keen interest in using the Insurrection Act to suppress Black Lives Matter protesters in the summer of 2020. Even more ominously, several Trump allies urged him to invoke the Insurrection Act in an effort to stay in power after losing the 2020 presidential election.

Federal military forces are usually barred from enforcing civilian laws by the Posse Comitatus Act. This prohibition reflects a tradition in American law and political thought that an army turned inward as an inherent threat to democracy and individual liberty. However, the Posse Comitatus Act is not an absolute rule. It allows federal troops to participate in law enforcement when doing so has been expressly authorized by Congress.

The Insurrection Act provides that authorization. The intent behind the act is to allow the president to use the military to assist civilian authorities when they are overwhelmed by an insurrection, rebellion, or other civil unrest, or to enforce civil rights laws when state or local governments can’t or won’t enforce them. In such cases, a narrow exception to the general rule against using the military for law enforcement makes good sense. The problem is that the Insurrection Act creates a giant loophole in the Posse Comitatus Act rather than a limited exception to it.

The Insurrection Act’s central failing is that it grants virtually limitless discretion to the president. Its vague and archaic language — it was first enacted in 1792, and last updated in 1874 — provides little meaningful guidance as to what situations do or do not warrant deployment. One provision, for example, empowers the president to use the military or “any other means” to “take such measures as he considers necessary” to suppress any “unlawful combination … or conspiracy” that “opposes or obstructs the execution of the laws of the United States or impedes the course of justice under those laws.” Read literally, this would permit the president to deploy the Marines to, say, arrest and detain two people suspected of conspiring to intimidate a witness in a federal trial.

Compounding the problem, the Supreme Court ruled in 1827 that the president alone decides whether invoking the Insurrection Act is justified; the courts may not review or second-guess that determination. As for Congress, if it disapproves of a president’s use of the act, its only recourse is to pass a law ending the deployment. The president would likely refuse to sign such a law, and Congress would then have to muster a two-thirds supermajority to override the president’s veto.

These flaws result in large part from Congress’ failure to update the Insurrection Act to meet the needs of a changing nation. Certain sections still look much as they did when Congress passed the first version of the Insurrection Act in 1792 — except that safeguards in the original law that allowed the courts or Congress to check the president’s authority have long since been removed.

No. Trump and his Trumptards should be scared of what happens when Biden turns the military against Trump. Trump could disappear into Guantanamo Bay where enhanced interrogation techniques can be used on him to speed up his trials. It is still "perfectly" legal to torture a fatso to death so long as fatso is locked up in Cuba. There is plenty of jail cells for one extra-wide lard bucket. Maybe the Republicans in the House should think about rewriting the Insurrection Act to take that power away from Biden. But Biden would have to sign the law and he might not because he hates Nazis like Trump.

A judge appointed by President Donald Trump ruled that North Dakota's legislative maps violated the Votings Rights Act (VRA) and must be revised before the end of the year.

The ruling filed Friday follows similar legal action centered around redistricting and discriminatory lawsuits that have succeeded in states since 2022, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and South Carolina. Lawsuits are still being deliberated in Texas.

Here's some facts for you.

Trump won in 2016, long before any redistricting happened.

Also, redistricting means nothing in a Presidential race anyhow. That only effects state and local races.

On this day in 2019, Joe Biden* was up in the polling aggregate by 10.2 points.

On this day in 2015, Hillary Clinton was up in the polling aggregate by 4.4 points.

Joe Biden* only "beat" Trump by little over 3 points. Hillary lost.

Trump is up on Biden* today by 1.6 points.

And he hasn't even started campaigning yet. Or posting on Twitter or Facebook.

He doesn't need to.

He can let the other GOP idiots eat each other alive, while the Democratic Party eats each other alive and Joe Biden* continues to fall on his face both metaphorically and literally.

Everybody else is doing his campaigning for him.

Trump's plan for Final Solution/Nazi Concentration Camps

Trump’s plan for giant detention camps points to a brutal 2024 reality

By Greg Sargent | November 14, 2023 at 8:00 a.m. EST

https://web.archive.org/web/20231114141238/https://www.washingtonpost.
com/opinions/2023/11/14/trump-mass-deportation-immigration-stephen-miller
/

Donald Trump’s advisers have declared that if he regains the presidency, he will launch an extraordinarily cruel crackdown on immigration. Given that Trump lost reelection in 2020 after attempting a tamer agenda, advertising such plans might seem like foolish political malpractice.

But the politics of immigration can be peculiar. The public tends to turn on the president in power when the situation on the border goes wrong, leading voters to seek a diametrically different approach — no matter what policies the incumbent has adopted or what their opponent proposes.

In political science jargon, these wild swings against prevailing policy are known as “thermostatic” public opinion. This is particularly pronounced on immigration given its fiendish complexities, meaning disapproval of the incumbent could allow Trump to win even though he is campaigning on an extreme alternative.

That second-term agenda would revolve around what the New York Times calls “giant camps.” While detention centers already exist, the Times reports that Trump and adviser Stephen Miller envision a vastly expanded network that would facilitate the deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants, including longtime residents with deep ties to communities.

Those camps would also enable Trump to dramatically scale up detention of people seeking asylum, which would be subject to shocking new limits. Trump would reinstate his ban on migrants from majority-Muslim countries, invoke new legal authorities to pursue mass expulsions and enlist the military to help carry them out.

Trump and his advisers see an opening to pursue these ambitions. They believe record new migrant arrivals (because of factors throughout the Americas) and the strains this has placed on Democratic cities mean “the political environment on immigration has moved in his direction,” as the Times puts it.

Undeniably, the public has soured on President Biden’s handling of the issue. Voters trust Trump on it by wide margins, support making asylum harder and even back his border wall. This has pundits opining that the issue now favors Trump. But let’s be clear on why this is happening and what it really means for 2024.

Recall that Trump’s handling of immigration was also deeply unpopular. In April 2019, another time when migrant arrivals dominated the news, large majorities opposed Trump’s approach, and very small minorities supported a border wall and wanted to make it harder to apply for asylum.

While disapproval of Trump turned partly on revulsion at his family separation policy, note that even with the border under severe strain, voters opposed restrictive policies across the board. As public opinion researcher Dan Hopkins shows, voters turned strongly against both the wall and deportations. Yet now voters appear open to such policies.

Here’s where thermostatic opinion comes in. Few voters are familiar with the finer points of asylum policy. Nor do most harbor strong ideological opposition to immigration; large majorities have generally regarded legal immigration as a good thing through both presidencies.

Instead, all indications suggest that voters think the border should be managed and don’t understand why that’s not happening. Under both presidents, imagery of disorder and migrant suffering filled the media, creating the powerful impression that the executive was failing to handle the situation. Naturally, in both cases, majorities disapproved of that handling of it.

“When policy is going badly and people see a Democrat in office, they tend to move in a Republican direction, and vice versa,” Stuart N. Soroka, a professor at UCLA who studies thermostatic opinion, told me. Immigration is susceptible to this, Soroka said, because voters underestimate “how difficult it is to control” and are “entirely reliant on negative, attention-grabbing media content” when forming impressions of the border.

Our immigration laws make this dynamic worse. Migrants are entitled to have their requests for asylum heard, yet Congress badly underfunds the system for processing them. Even presidents who want to make the legal system facilitate more immigration, as Biden does, are hobbled by decades-old laws governing who gains entry that are out of sync with the realities driving today’s migrations. So, Biden’s disapproval is all but assured to be high, just as it was under Trump.

Ideologues such as Trump and Miller might truly believe the resulting disapproval of Biden means the public will fully embrace their radical vision. It’s telling that Trump, who recently declared that migrants are “poisoning the blood of our country,” is trumpeting designs with clear White-nationalist implications, such as a revived ban on Muslims and a vision of detention and deportations that appears designed to showcase maximum cruelty for base-thrilling kicks.

Yet the depravities of Trump’s first effort at mass deportations generated intense backlash, and his first attempt at a Muslim ban inspired furious outcry precisely because it offended many Americans’ vision of inclusive national identity. While the mere promise of a better-managed border would be a formidable argument against Biden, Trump and Miller seem determined to telegraph unbridled nativist savagery, which could well constitute political overreach in 2024.

Alternatively, voters could see the 2024 immigration debate as merely a referendum on Biden, while largely forgetting the horrors that Trump’s agenda visited on the country last time and tuning out his threats of more to come. Given what we know about public opinion, that unbearably perverse possibility is very real.

Yes sir, Trump is as Presidential as he can be. He's not crazy. It's Hillary.

The golden shower lie, which you an other idiots like Ted and Nilbog parroted here as truth when it was making headlines, is just one of a very long string of lies told about Trump over the last 7 years by the Democrat Establishment and the Legacy Media that works for them.

Trump wouldn't be educating anybody about what a golden shower was if Hillary hadn't paid Steele to make that lie up in the first place. And chances are, anybody who he was talking to about it Saturday night already heard that story 100 times before and resents that it happened as much today as when it first happened.

Are you going to pretend that golden showers offend YOUR delicate sensibilities now when it was your side that lied about them in the first place 7 years ago? Did you expect Trump to not talk about this in 2023 leading up to his reelection?

Of course Trump is going to talk about it. It's Trump. Not fake Christian NeoCons like Nikki Haley or Mike Pence.

Meanwhile, in reality, I wonder how many pedophile Tranny clowns have educated 8 year old children about what golden showers are at Drag Queen Story Hour in Democrat shitholes.

Somebody should look into that.

Somebody should look into that.

Many former Trump aides say he shouldn’t be president. Will it matter?

John F. Kelly, the longest-serving chief of staff in President Donald Trump’s White House, watches Trump dominate the GOP primary with increasing despair.

“What’s going on in the country that a single person thinks this guy would still be a good president when he’s said the things he’s said and done the things he’s done?” Kelly said in a recent interview. “It’s beyond my comprehension he has the support he has.”

Kelly, a retired four-star general, said he didn’t know what to do — or what he could do — to help people see it his way.

“I came out and told people the awful things he said about wounded soldiers, and it didn’t have half a day’s bounce. You had his attorney general Bill Barr come out, and not a half a day’s bounce. If anything, his numbers go up. It might even move the needle in the wrong direction. I think we’re in a dangerous zone in our country,” he said.

No president has ever attracted more public detractors who were formerly in his inner circle. They are closely watching his rise — cruising in the GOP nomination contest and, in most polls, tying or even leading President Biden in a general election matchup — with alarm. Among them are his former vice president, top military advisers, lawyers, some members of his Cabinet, economic advisers, press officials and campaign aides, some of whom are working for other candidates.

Among their reasons for opposing a second Trump term, they cite the 91 criminal charges against him, his attempts to overturn the 2020 election, his false claims of election fraud, his incendiary rhetoric in office, his desire to weaponize the Justice Department, his chaotic management style, his likely personnel choices in a second term, and his affinity for dictators.

. . .

Former White House counsel Ty Cobb, who defended Trump during the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election and once was seen as a loyal soldier, said it was imperative for people to vote against Trump.

“He has never cared about America, its citizens, its future or anything but himself. In fact, as history well shows from his divisive lies, as well as from his unrestrained contempt for the rule of law and his related crimes, his conduct and mere existence have hastened the demise of democracy and of the nation,” Cobb wrote in an email. “Our adversaries and our allies both recognize that even his potential reelection diminishes America on the world stage and ensures continued acceleration of the domestic decline we are currently enduring. If that reelection actually happens, the consequences will extinguish what, if anything, remains of the American Dream.”

6ix, you have a seriously fucked up life. Trump's life is even more fucked up than yours, making it no surprise that you worship Trump, who is despised by his own chief of staff. 6ix, you are not alone in making Trump your god. Every person I know who worships Trump has the most ridiculous life, full of major and recurring troubles ordinary people easily avoid.

My life is fine buddy. How was work today, bitch? Making any progress on all those loans that you'll never pay off yet?

Meanwhile, you're deflecting again. Stay on topic.
