Quote:On July 31, 1903, a letter to President Theodore Roosevelt arrived at the White House from Carrie Kinsey an African American woman in Bainbridge, Georgia. Her fourteen-year-old brother, James Robinson, had been abducted a year earlier and sold to a plantation. Local police would take no interest. "Mr. President," wrote Mrs. Kinsey. "They won’t let me have him.... He has done nothing for them to have him in chains so I write to you for your help." Like the vast majority of such pleas, her letter was slipped into a small rectangular folder at the Department of Justice and tagged with a reference number, in this case 12007.4 No further action was ever recorded. Her letter lies today in the National Archives. A world in which the seizure and sale of a black man—even a black child— was viewed as neither criminal nor extraordinary had reemerged. Millions of blacks lived in that shadow—as forced laborers or their family members, or African Americans in terror of the system’s caprice. The practice would not fully recede from their lives until the dawn of World War II, when profound global forces began to touch the lives of black Americans for the first time since the era of the international abolition movement a century earlier, prior to the Civil War.
Quote:Why would someone ever get into the business of selling other human beings? That’s the dark question that drove historian Joshua Rothman to write The Ledger and the Chain: How Domestic Slave Traders Shaped America, his tremendous new book about the lives of 19th-century businessmen Isaac Franklin, John Armfield, and Rice Ballard. “The observation that Franklin, Armfield, and Ballard lived in a nation that sanctioned and rewarded the market exchange of people as property is true,” Rothman begins. “But it is inadequate.” From there, the history intertwines a careful biography of a very successful business with unflinching attention to the monstrosity that business was built upon. The Ledger and the Chain tells the story of how these three men profited from the United States’ decision to outlaw the foreign slave trade, in 1808. The change, of course, did not put an end to slavery inside the United States, and because the slaveholding states of the Upper South were finding that their land was increasingly difficult to work after decades of tobacco cultivation, they profited by selling people further South, where cotton and sugar production was booming.

Quote:6ix, you have even complained against Biden raising by executive order the wages to $15 of employees working for government contractors.
Quote:As far as predatory loans, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was created to stop that, but the Trumptards gutted it.

The people who bought a bunch of shit they don't need and turned themselves into wage slaves did."A penny saved is a penny earned." Ben Franklin told Americans how to avoid becoming somebody's slave, but they quickly read and even quicker forgot what they were told. www.fi.edu/benjamin-franklin/famous-quotes www.brainyquote.com/lists/authors/top-10-benjamin-franklin-quotes The same forgetfulness continues today. Bezos told Americans how they could become as rich as Bezos, but they quickly forgot. Instead, they predictively did the exact opposite of what he told them to do -- they "bought a bunch of shit" from Amazon rather than buy Amazon stock. Bezos, same as Franklin, had long figured out Americans' addicted behavior and their mental weaknesses around money. From 1997 to 2021, Bezos told Americans every year what he would do to them if they didn't pay attention to what he was doing: "We will continue to focus relentlessly on our customers" and take all their money because Americans are unfocused, directionless and live without real purpose, trying to find personal meaning in consumer products, pretty real estate, entertainment for the masses, and political contests in which they are only bystanders. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SpgDsIpC_cAS0O4cBz4Sb_GJcEIBhUtA/view The Joss Whedon script for Serenity, where Wash lives, is Serenity-190pages.pdf at www.mediafire.com/folder/1uwh75oa407q8/Firefly

Quote:Capital is unfaithful. It can, and does, play all sides. Many of the courageous businesses that protested North Carolina’s 2016 “bathroom bill,” for instance, also donated to political groups that helped fund the candidacies of the very politicians who passed the bill.
Quote:It isn’t possible to cooperate with capital on social matters while fighting them in other theaters; capital can fight you in all theaters at once, all while enjoying public adulation for helping you, as well.
Quote:Setting aside the fact that capital can in a single moment be both heroic and diabolical — Amazon wants you to be able to vote, but it would prefer if you didn’t unionize — it is, incredibly, even less democratic, accountable and responsive than our ramshackle democracy. Capital rallies to the defense of democracy while aggressively quashing that very thing in the workplaces where its workers labor.
Quote:I have no idea what to do about this other than know it for what it is. If it were ever the case that knowledge was power, it certainly isn’t so anymore: Knowledge is more widely dispersed than ever; power remains notably concentrated. But knowledge confers a certain dignity. It’s worse to be powerless and unaware than to be powerless and perfectly clear on where you stand.

LOL So are we finally admitting I was right all along and the Democrats can't break the filibuster even though the media told you for months now that they can and will? You're obviously not a chess player, because if the Democrats ever actually broke the filibuster they'd have also better damn well made sure they broke the election process so thoroughly in America that Republicans could never hold a majority again.

You're obviously not a chess player, because if the Democrats ever actually broke the filibuster they'd have also better damn well made sure they broke the election process so thoroughly in America that Republicans could never hold a majority again.I think it would be an excellent idea if there was no filibuster. The Republicans would have no excuse for not, giving one example, replacing Obamacare with something better. The GOP didn't have anything better for Obamacare. There was no draft bill. Nothing at all. That was why their strategy was repeal and, who knows when, replace Obamacare. The entire policy of the GOP is to do nothing. When in the majority, they do nothing, other than not enforcing tax laws and pollution laws. When in the minority, they need the filibuster to make sure the Democrats do nothing. To repeat what I don't think a Trumptard can ever really understand: When the government does nothing, the top 1% wealthiest Americans become the de facto rulers of America, which is very fine with the 1%. Quote:Originally posted by 6ixStringJack: The problem is that any of the arguments you have in support of Democrats become moot when they do all of the other things that no reasonable person would ever support. Given how bad it is for so many people here already, why on earth should we be raising the cap of illegals to 4 times what it was last year? Why are we letting any of them in at all? Why are YOU letting the Media make you think anybody who wants to protect the border is a racist? The Modern Democrat party hates white people. Particularly males. Every single argument they make is a racist one. My old man was talking about a visit they had with my brother who moved to the east coast with his rich new wife a few years ago. He turned from a normal guy into somebody so far left that it would make AOC blush. He wouldn't let his own parents come over to see the baby unless they got vaccinated, and has just sent out invitations for her 1st birthday party that lets people know not to RSVP if they haven't gotten their vaccine, but for the last year they've been paying their black female nanny to raise the baby and she still hasn't been vaccinated. So I asked him how their pet human was doing. My dad kind of laughed and said what do you mean? I said that for the last 10 years of my life, black and Mexican people have been my peers. I work with them. I break bread with them. I smoke with them. I shit talk the bosses with them. There's no bullshit between us like you see on the news all the time. We're just the guys and gals that do all the work and drive around shitty cars while other people make money off of our backs. I said I was fortunate that I've had many years now, and even around 5 in my 20's to live and work among people who were born different than I was and to have gained such a perspective one can only gain while working along side of people from different background, rather than having them work for me or living in a bubble and never having to be around them at all. My brother doesn't live in the "bad" part of town. He's got a million dollar house, and they're shopping for an even bigger and more expensive house in an even more exclusive community as we speak. His new "super safe" for the baby electric soccer mom van cost almost as much as my house did, and probably more than every vehicle I will ever buy in my life does. But hoo boy... does he feel guilty for being white and having a Mom and Dad that raised him right and got him all the way through college on acedemic and sports scholarships so he could get an education in green energy that is actually going to make him money for the rest of his life without any college debt. So he needs to buy himself a pet black human to read My Non Racist Baby to his new daughter inside their ivory tower in their lilly white exclusive neighborhood. Then they can pretend that they're not the racist ones, while never actually having to be around any black people who's paychecks they aren't signing.
