Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I'm just telling you what I think the voting public is going to see in Joe and the democrats - and overall it isn't good. This is the exact same way I was posting what was wrong with Hillary and the DNC way back before the 2016 election.

You can post and post and post and post arguments against me all day long to ... try and make yourself right ... or change my mind ... or whatever it is you're trying to do here.

But nothing you post here is going to change anything out there. So instead of trying to make this about me (which is pretty pointless), how about you try to understand the world out there, and why the odds and polls are the way they are. And nearly everywhere I look at the moment the betting odds are neck and neck.

Now, I am not going to make any predictions, just like I didn't last time (though I did personally assume Hillary was going to win).

But if everything you post is right and Donald is abysmal and has done everything wrong since before day 1 and is in congress with the devil; and Joe walks on water and will fix all our problems and smell good too; then you need some kind of explanation for what all those people out there might be thinking that accounts for why the odds are the way they are.

Kiki's bottom line is vote for Trump. It was her bottom line in 2016 and it is her bottom line now. Her approach is to lie about the other candidate. To make shit up about how that person will run the country if elected. Her assertions are outlandish and never matches the governing style of the person she is demeaning. Her approach doesn't matter at all. Trumps fuck ups and incompetence is all that matters. Kiki's deflecting away from that by trashing the other candidate is typical. She is, a Trumpet...

On August 27, 2019, President Donald Trump held a 41.3 percent approval rating. One year later, Trump is at 42.2 percent approval.

If you had told me, a year ago, that a pandemic virus would overrun the country, that 200,000 Americans would die and case numbers would dwarf Europe, that the economy would go into deep freeze and the federal government prove utterly feckless, I would’ve thought that’s the kind of systemic shock that could crack into public opinion. I’m not saying I would’ve predicted Trump falling to 20 percent, but I would’ve predicted movement.

The stability unnerves me because it undermines the basic theory of responsive democracy. If our political divisions cut so deep that even 200,000 deaths and 10.2 percent unemployment and a president musing about bleach injections can’t shake us, then what can? And if the answer is nothing, then that means the crucial form of accountability in American politics has collapsed.

But still: Forty-two percent of Americans look at Trump and believe he’s doing a good job, or at least a good enough one. And nothing they’ve seen over the past year has shaken that view.

Let’s step away from politics for a second. I’ve told Texans that if they can afford to pay Annual Percentage Rate of 1012.00% they can afford to save before they need $100, but they don’t save. Instead, they go to Lone Star Cash. www.lscash.com

I’ve told Texans to not bypass interlocks or they will get electrocuted, but they go right on bypassing and, eventually, get killed.

1kiki, do you really and truly think: "you need some kind of explanation for what all those people out there might be thinking that accounts for why the odds are the way they are." The explanation is simple: the same brain making political decisions is the brain screwing up the rest of their lives. Why would their politics on election day make more sense than the routine decisions they make the rest of year?

There is podcast "What the Iraq disaster can teach us about Trump" explaining why the GOP does not govern competently. https://www.vox.com/2020/9/2/21417224/why-did-america-invade-iraq-the-
ezra-klein-show-to-start-a-war-bush-trump-administration

The guy being interviewed, Robert Draper, has a book out called "To Start a War: How the Bush Administration Took America into Iraq". Get it for free at mirrors https://libgen.unblockit.top/search.php?req=Robert+Draper

Or you can listen to the podcast and get plenty of insight on psychological reasons why the GOP makes bad decisions when it is in control. Ordinary voters also make bad decisions in everyday life (think back to bypass interlocks or Lone Star Cash) for much the same reasons as why their politicians go horribly wrong when faced with monumentally important decisions.

CORRECTION:
August 27, 2019, Trump had 43.2% approval on the aggregate.

August 27, 2020, Trump had 44.0% approval on the aggregate.

And I love to break it to you once again, these numbers are in no way reflective of reality. Something that I just can't prove until Trump annihilates Biden on election day.

Trump's popularity is charted against the previous 12 Presidents at the bottom of this page:
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/

Those previous Presidents' popularity changes very strongly as things go wrong in the nation, but not so with Trump because about 42% of Americans don't know wrong from right. You can easily see that blindness to wrongness in their daily lives, if you pay attention to their antics, but they can't see themselves. The Bible described this blindness: https://biblehub.com/luke/6-42.htm

One thing I’ve learned about Trump and about the country is that Trump has always exploited honor systems. He’s always looked for places where people obey the law not because they have to but because it’s seen as the right thing to do. They don’t want to go against social convention, and so they follow the rules—but when you break the law, it’s not like a cop steps out from behind a pillar and arrests you. He takes advantage of that. When he finds a place where there’s an honor system, he exploits it. He does what the honor system doesn’t expect. And he often gets a huge advantage out of that. He did that in his business often. He did it at his charity—he didn’t follow charity rules, and he took advantage of the fact that the charity system takes a long time to catch up with you if you do that.

And what we’ve found is that the presidency is an honor system. On purpose, we did not write a lot of laws that govern the presidency because that’s supposed to be held by a person of honor who will follow honor systems about not mixing government and private business, not mixing government and politics. And Trump has again taken advantage of that. There’s so many cases in which he said, I know it says I can’t do this or other people haven’t done this, but I’m going to do it. Try and stop me. I’ll see you in two years. What we’ve seen in all these court cases is that that worked. And also that Trump’s opponents, the Democrats in Congress and people in law enforcement, didn’t understand whom they were dealing with. Often they sort of seemed to expect that Trump would follow the honor systems, even when his whole life had shown that he would not.

Trump’s approach only works for a while, and sometimes that’s enough. I mean, think about how well it worked for him in 2016: It got him elected president. But eventually it comes down on him. That happened with the Trump Foundation. It happened with Trump University. Eventually the system stirs to life and comes after him. So he and the whole Trump organization could be in that position next year if Trump loses. He will finally have the honor system catch up to him, the kids and Trump. If he’s reelected, though, he may get a protection from it that will last long enough to effectively be permanent.

I get it - Trump supporters are stupid, lazy, and morally corrupt.

You must also think (by extension) that everyone who was damaged by the Great Depression was culpable for their own misfortune.

In your mind, it's not that the system failed all those people, either then in 1929 or in 2008-2017, it's that they were weak, and stupid, and they simply failed the system.

So nobody deserves to feel angry. Nobody deserves to look to their democratic government to function in their interests. Right?

You like to tell us what an excellent failure analyst you are. And yet, you can't look at an economic system that has repeatedly turned people into bits of charred ash from time to time as a regular part of its history, and find fault.

So either you're ignoring those oopses, or you think they're an indication of excellent design.

You really are not going to like this paper because it uses the words "Incompetent Citizen" to describe what is happening:

The liberal democracy Americans know, with its abstract principles, complex institutional arrangements and conflicted, deliberative practices, is difficult for most people to understand and embrace. Since people typically think in terms of simple hierarchies, when it comes to governing, they believe that, like the military, someone must be in charge to make decisions. Constraints on executive power are regarded as unwarranted obstructions.

Most people also think in terms of simple categories. So when it comes to citizenship, they understand that being American means being like other Americans. As such, citizenship requires loyally conforming to shared beliefs, common codes of behavior, and even often having similar appearance. In this context, respect for differences among in-group members or of out-group members (such as minorities, immigrants or foreigners) makes little sense. To the contrary, these differences are potential threats to the integrity of nation and should be suppressed accordingly.

Yet despite the limitations of its citizens, the U.S. has remained a liberal democracy with broad popular support. In my view, this is because the U.S., like many Western countries, has been democratic in only a limited sense. Economic, political and cultural power has remained in the hands of a relatively small elite. This power is divided among progressive and conservative elites, who are united in their appreciation of democratic governance, the protections it affords — and of course the benefits they themselves enjoy.

Consequently, America’s elites have deployed their power over political nominations to sideline figures who to threaten democratic processes. They have similarly used their influence over the mass media and educational institutions to guide the national political discussion and exclude anti-democratic messages. In these ways, they have been able to shepherd a public that might otherwise naturally be receptive to undemocratic alternatives.

The problem now is that the power of this oligarchic elite is waning. Competitive capitalism, technological innovation, the social dislocations of mass migration and the ever-greater democratization of governance have combined to weaken the authority of traditional elites and the conventional practices they advocate.

In the process, individuals are now free to come to their own understanding of their situation and needs, and to choose the direction they and others must follow. But, as already noted, people typically lack the cognitive capacity to generate their own understandings and self-direct. Instead they rely on conventional beliefs and the guidance of authoritative leaders. Rejecting traditional resources but unable to make sense of things themselves, people are increasingly seeking alternative authorities (political, social and religious) to provide the certainties and moral direction they require.

Indeed, with the rise of social media and increasingly open political primaries, the messages offered by alternative authorities are more available than ever. If these new messengers offer a worldview that people can readily understand and appreciate, they are being enthusiastically embraced by a public that is otherwise confused, alienated and anxious.

“We the People” is a concretely defined social category. “We” share the same basic characteristics, the same unassailable beliefs and aspire to the same goals. “We” belong and so have a clear identity, certain direction and protection in an otherwise uncertain and threatening world. “We” stand against alien “others” who have different characteristics, beliefs and goals. Whether they are the domestic “other” of minorities and immigrants, or the external “other” of foreigners, they are at best irrelevant and at worst a threat. For most people, this is the kind of world they can easily understand and comfortably embrace.

The broader and longer-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is best understood in this context of an already fragile U.S. democracy. The dangers it presents and social dislocations it creates are exacerbating the confusion, anxiety, alienation and anger many people already feel. These people want and need clarity, saviors and scapegoats. Given the more concrete, fragmentary ways in which most people think, the message of liberal democracy with its code of “political correctness” is too abstract and complex to satisfy them.

Meanwhile the pandemic has further delegitimized the oligarchic elite. For many Americans, the failures of science, health experts and political leaders to deal with the crises is further evidence of their inability to lead and their lack of common interest with the people. The pandemic thus contributes to the process whereby the oligarchic defenders of U.S. democracy are losing their ability to impose their vision on an increasingly alienated public. Emancipated from the strictures of social convention and traditional authority, Americans are free to make their own choices. In doing so, they are increasingly favoring authoritarians and populists. In this way, democracy devours itself.

Second, what kiki, sig, jsf, rappy and a few others are is what’s called anti, anti-Trump. This means they are against anyone who is against Trump. What they mostly do is attack everything and everyone as a way to deflect away from Trump. They do this because there is too much evidence Trump did all he’s accused of. Admitting to it would, well, they can’t admit to it.

They will create a thread criticizing Pelosi about a haircut and ignore Trumps and his advisers many felonies. One thing is for sure. They own, along with Trump, all he has done. This undeniably fact lays bare who and what they are.

Nailed it T. I would say, "sad but true," but it's more disgusting, ignorant, despicable, weak, loathsome and true. Trump has cast some kind of spell on these people, and all of the fawning yes people that surround him. We're talking Jim Jones x 100,000,000, and as much kool aid and they can choke down.
I can't believe so many people have such anti-America agendas, or are just so spineless or so ignorant as to not see his simple deceptions. Guess that's why it works! And they're buying into... what? Where do they suppose he's taking this country? Kill or expel all the non-whites? Careful, after that will be forced labor camps and re-education training for all the poor, dumb whites left. Hate to break it to you, but that's already started. Top tip: that's not what they're going to be called.

I pay no attention to anything Trump says or tweets - or anything that Biden says or tweets either. And I've criticized neither of them for their words. Words are just so much hot air coming out of any politician.

But you should be wondering why Trump is doing so well in the polls while Biden is slipping so badly. After all, Biden is saying all the right things, and Trump is saying all the wrong things.

Maybe other people are looking at their relative histories of actions as politicos besides just me. How much did they scam the system? Over how many years? How long did they sell working Americans off to the lowest international bidder? How cozy were they with illegal immigrants? How many wars did they start? Trivial stuff like that.

Agreed G. A plethora of circumstantial evidence shows this matches Trumps MO. That, and the fact that the author of the article that exposes Trumps statements has a solid reputation. Then, the very evening the story broke, Trump does what? He verbally attacks the military. He calls its generals war mongers and so on. He claims the troops love him, but the top brass don't. He insinuates they are out to get him.

We must not ignore G, that those like kiki and sig who push for Trump in many covert ways, are either Russian trolls as we’ve said again and again, or they are really really stupid.

Epilogue to Rage by Bob Woodward, 2020

After I finished reporting for this book on President Trump, I felt weariness. The country was in real turmoil. The virus was out of control. The economy was in crisis with more than 40 million out of work. A powerful reckoning on racism and inequality was upon us. There seemed to be no end in sight, and certainly no clear path to get there.

I thought back to the conversation with Trump on February 7 when he mentioned the “dynamite behind every door,” the unexpected explosion that could change everything. He was apparently thinking about some external event that would affect the Trump presidency.

But now, I’ve come to the conclusion that the “dynamite behind the door” was in plain sight. It was Trump himself. The oversized personality. The failure to organize. The lack of discipline. The lack of trust in others he had picked, in experts. The undermining or the attempted undermining of so many American institutions. The failure to be a calming, healing voice. The unwillingness to acknowledge error. The failure to do his homework. To extend the olive branch. To listen carefully to others. To craft a plan.

Mattis, Tillerson and Coats are all conservatives or apolitical people who wanted to help him and the country. Imperfect men who answered the call to public service. They were not the deep state. Yet each departed with cruel words from their leader. They concluded that Trump was an unstable threat to their country. Think about that for a moment: The top national security leaders thought the president of the United States was a danger to the country.

Trump said the intelligence people needed to go back to school. The generals were stupid. The media was fake news.

Trump had spent so many years undermining people who challenged him. Not only his opponents but those who worked for him and for the American public.

And here was the problem: By undermining so many others not only had he shaken confidence in them but he had shaken confidence in himself. This was particularly apparent when the country most needed to feel the government knew what it was doing in an unprecedented health crisis.

If Woodward can't see that all Presidents lie, repeatedly and with malice aforethought, then he's a stupid cow who shouldn't be pontificating. And if he's pontificating, he shouldn't be paid attention.

This is just Woodward, and SECONDRATE, blaming Trump for the corruption and mismanagement of the past 60 years.

Remember the Vietnam War? There was plenty of outrage about that while it was happening, but not enough. There should have been a thousand times more riots, and hundreds of attempts to assassinate Nixon, Kissinger, and Melvin Laird for what they did. Instead, all Nixon had to do is resign and things completely smoothed out for Nixon. His retirement years were very peaceful and undisturbed. Nobody tried to put him in jail. Nobody tried to kill him for what he did in South East Asia. That was a huge mistake that Woodward, famous for reporting about only Nixon/Watergate, is well aware of. Trump is aware, too:

Trump Officials have to go to jail for what has happened.

If Democrats do hold their House majority and retake the Senate and the White House, it’s easy to foresee a scenario where, coupled with pressure from Republicans and centrists, Democrats decide that the public is sick of even thinking about Trump and bygones are allowed to be bygones.

But that would be a huge mistake. If Trump and his enablers are allowed to get away with the misdeeds of the last four years unscathed, it may mean the end of the American experiment.

The American system of government has proven to be far more fragile and norms-dependent than most public policy professionals had thought possible. It may only take one more president of limited moral constraints to topple it entirely. And given that impeachment and removal have proven for many different Presidents to be an empty threat, the only deterrent to a future Trumplike president and their enablers will be the fear of being held legally and financially accountable for wrongdoing after leaving office.

Democrats will almost certainly try to codify into law some of the violated norms – for instance, requiring that presidential candidates release tax returns and placing increased walls between the President and the Attorney General, but if a Chief Executive wants to abuse power, and has enough allied Senators to stave off removal after an impeachment, then the opportunities for mischief are endless.

There is a minor American myth about shame and regret. It goes like this.

In the years following Richard Nixon’s 1974 resignation amid scandal and disgrace, polls found that fewer Americans admitted to having voted for him than actually did. Apparently many former Nixon voters now realized the error of their ways and were embarrassed to admit ever having pulled the lever for him.

Everything about this story is false, and the truth of it is worse. Nixon’s loyal supporters stood by him the entire way, despite his crimes. His popularity did not retreat behind a wave of shame; it was merely muted by the national embarrassment of his resignation.

What does this tell us about today’s Trump supporters? Partisan divisions are much worse now than they were during the mid-1970s, so Trump voters’ fierce loyalty to this sexist, racist charlatan is unsurprising. But in explaining why, we tend to focus on the Cult of Trump, as if he has special qualities that give him some magical hold over his supporters. True, in many ways Trump is a unique politician in American history. Yet given our history, it seems likelier that his supporters’ undying devotion is less about the spells Trump casts, and more about the constancy of American political partisanship.

Indeed, the difference between Trump’s and Nixon’s loyal supporters might be more about decibel count than sentiment. And so by looking back at the steadfast support Richard Nixon maintained right through his resignation, we can better understand the misguided loyalty keeping Trump’s reelection campaign afloat.

A month after Nixon had resigned, what percentage of Americans held the extremist view that nothing Nixon did had warranted legal censure of any kind? It was 38%. A number shockingly similar to Trump’s current approval rating. ( https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/ and www.vox.com/2020/9/2/21409364/trump-approval-rating-2020-election-vote
rs-coronavirus-convention-polls
)

The failure to try or officially punish Richard Nixon for his crimes, lies, intransigence, and multi-faceted attack on U.S. constitutional systems and norms, set a precedent for presidential criminality, including Trump’s various crimes and corrosive attacks on the U.S. republic.

That such criminality has since been far more common in Republican presidential administrations than in Democratic presidencies is perhaps a coincidence. Or not.

Have you seen Trump in action? "If you look at Germany, one fifth our death rate. If you look at South Korea, 80 times fewer deaths than we've had. These are lives that have been lost and jobs that have been lost because we haven't had an organized, consistent, coherent federal response." The federal response is Trump's response.

Dr. Tom Frieden: US nearing 200,000 Covid-19 deaths is a "reflection of a failing national response"

Trump in action:
... a President who has no medical expertise and has incessantly downplayed the emergency, bulldozed into the White House Briefing Room to kneecap one of the nation's top health officials, Dr. Robert Redfield. The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had told lawmakers it could be fall 2021 before there are sufficient vaccine stocks to allow normal life to resume. He also said masks work.

"I think he got the message maybe confused," the President said of the vaccine comments and added that Redfield "didn't understand the question" on masks -- even though the doctor's answers had been clearly considered and carefully worded.

The President's undercutting of Redfield came in a week in which he has repeatedly rejected the best advice of health authorities, including by holding an indoor campaign rally. He's also challenged the science of global warming as historic fires rage in Western states.

6ix, I know Texas Republicans who say they will kill to keep Trump in the White House, even if he loses. It's so funny because these are the same guys who I have to field dress their deer because they are squeamish about blood and guts and sharp knives. They also miss more than half their shots and scare away the deer or wound it, which is even worse. Then I have to track their beast through the thicket because these guys are terrible at that part of hunting, too. A bunch of wannabe assassins who don't have the skills.
