There you go again with the insinuation that Obama could change the minimum wage without Congress. The GOP Senators stood in his way, making sure it did not go up. If Biden becomes President, the GOP Senators will still be there stopping the minimum wage from being raised to $15 per hour.

As for www.epi.org/nominal-wage-tracker/ -- You know wages are set by people like me. If we want to pay only $20 per hour on average, which is well above minimum, we can keep it at $20 for decades with inflation actually slowly eroding what $20 is worth. It's like a stealthy pay decrease. The Federal Reserve knows what the top 1 Percenters are doing and as long as there are 34 or more GOP Senators, we cannot be stopped:

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

There were two whole years when democrats had control of Congress and the WH. That would have been an opportune time for them to show how much they cared about the average American worker.

But Obama showed who he REALLY cared about pleasing when his administration prosecuted no one significant for the meltdown, and then shoveled money as fast as possible to financialism while leaving average Americans to twist in the wind.

He couldn't even put his MOUTH behind the pretense of caring ... let alone reform an economy that's been crushing working Americans for decades.

That's the difference between democrats and Trump - and even Trump and republicans. Trump says the economic emperor has no clothes.

1kiki. you are kidding. President Obama had a majority that was only filibuster proof for a period of 72 working days while the Senate was actually in session. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/111th_United_States_Congress

It was less than "72 days". One of Obama's so-called 60 members of his filibuster proof Senators was Joe Lieberman, who actually quit the Democrats and had been elected by the "CT for Lieberman" party because Joe had lost in the Democratic primary. Lieberman famously screwed over the Democrats during the drafting of Obamacare.

Another of Obama's so-called 60 Democratic Senators was Senator Arlen Specter, who switched from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party on April 28, 2009. Specter was still a Republican in everything but name.

How did Obama lose his 60 nominally Democratic Senators, which he must have to get around the stonewall of the GOP? The April 2009 party switch of Pennsylvania senator Arlen Specter from Republican to Democrat and the July 2009 resolution of the Minnesota election in favor of Democrat Al Franken increased the Democratic majority to 60–40. Republicans gained a seat in a January 2010 special election in Massachusetts, making the balance 59-41 before the start of the next election cycle. AT THAT POINT, UNTIL THE END OF OBAMA'S PRESIDENCY, IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO PASS ANY LAW THE GOP OBJECTED TO.

Queue Second bitching about Republicans in Congress.

Because he uses the same cop out every time he's asked about this.

And honestly, if he gives a single shit about this issue (which he doesn't) it makes me wonder why he even cares about Biden being elected since it's not going to change the minimum wage at all and in the alternate timeline where Biden wins the minimum wage isn't going to change in any meaningful way anyhow and he'd just use the same excuse for the next 4 to 8 years.

I figured out what is wrong with 6ix, 1kiki, and Signym. You three are the political science equivalent of a Flat Earther. Here is a real physicist talking seriously about the Flat Earth "Science" -- Wrong, but not Stupid. You should listen to it and learn how smart people can be very wrong yet it is impossible to change their minds with words:

"The world looks flat, the bottoms of clouds are flat, the movement of the Sun; these are all examples of your senses telling you that we do not live on a spherical heliocentric world. This is using what's called an empirical approach, or an approach that relies on information from your senses." - www.tfes.org

You will love the section called "Astronomy is a Pseudoscience". All those telescopes in the world or in orbit? That is NOT science according to the Flat Earth Society.
https://wiki.tfes.org/Astronomy_is_a_Pseudoscience
"Astronomy does not, and can not, follow the Scientific Method; which is an empirical method of inquiry which demands that hypothesis is tested with experiment. The astronomer cannot put the stars under controlled experimental conditions to demonstrate ideas and come to the truth of a matter, as a chemist can do with his or her materials. The astronomer can only observe and interpret—a scientific fallacy which hinders truth and progress."

"No man knows the ultimate shape of the earth, but that portion we live on is definitely flat. No one will ever know what the whole complexity is like, I suppose, because it goes beyond his sphere of observation, investigation and comprehension." – Samuel Shenton

"I don't think there is solid proof the earth is round. I'm not intentionally being stubborn about it, but I feel our senses tell us these things, and it would take an extraordinary level of evidence to counteract those. How many people have actually investigated it? Have you?" – Daniel Shenton

I am certain that the GOP will oppose in the Senate the following:

How to decarbonize America — and create 25 million jobs

The US has the technology to decarbonize by 2035. Here’s a plan to do it.

The point is that America has enough renewable resources such that we could probably keep exactly the same lifestyles, and if we do it all electrically, we can do it at half the energy. And we can produce all of that energy cleanly, domestically in America.

Today, if you’re paying about 10 cents per kilowatt-hour for electricity and putting it into an electric car, that’s about two or three cents per mile. If you’re paying two or three dollars a gallon for gasoline into an equivalent-sized car, you’re paying more like 15 cents a mile for the fuel. So you’re saving more than 10 cents for every mile you’re driving with an electric vehicle.

We do need to focus very clearly on keeping the cost of the electricity low. If we look around, there is proof that that can be done. Australia has very successfully run policies and utility regulation that has enabled rooftop solar in Australia to cost about six or seven cents per kilowatt-hour, cheaper than basically any utility in America can deliver. So there is a future where the cheapest energy that you can use will be the solar. (I’m paying 8.0 cents per kilowatt-hour for 100% renewable from Green Energy Exchange https://getgex.com )

The Flat Earthers also screech about False Dichotomies, thinking of themselves as very sophisticated people who realized that astronomers are not scientific because they have performed no experiments to prove the Earth is round, at least not proof that Flat Earthers will accept. Republicans are still the political science equivalent of Flat Earthers who, being extremely sophisticated people, refuse to accept proof that doesn't meet their exacting criteria.

Homo sapiens have been around for 315,000 years or more. For most of that time, humans weren't accomplishing much. If I had to speculate why so little material progress was made in prehistory, or why so many Republicans I know in Texas don't prosper, I'd say that it was not because ancient humans or today's Republicans have weak, primitive brains in their heads, but that the ideas in our heads have held humanity back and made 6ix's life less rewarding.

When Did Homo Sapiens First Appear?
www.discovermagazine.com/planet-earth/when-did-homo-sapiens-first-appe
ar

The oldest Homo sapiens fossils that anthropologists have found thus far date to around 315,000 years ago. That means we can say that modern humans are at least that old. But our lineage likely extends further back in time — we just don’t have the fossils to prove it.

DNA evidence drawn from comparisons of different human genomes, as well as those of close cousins like Neanderthals and Denisovans, put the split between the three groups at at least 400,000 years ago. So it’s possible that H. sapiens is over half a million years old.

Remember Harry Reid? "Harry Reid ... was the Senate Majority Leader from 2007 to 2015." Wikipedia

Yanno, THAT Harry Reid - the human-shaped marshmallow that NEVER ONCE got up on its hind legs to make the republicans actually - what's that word - filibuster?

Nope. Democratic Senators just shrugged their shoulders and all agreed collect their paychecks and go home quietly without making any effort at all - let alone use the filibuster as an ongoing tactic so republicans would make a major spectacle of themselves.

And Obama was fine with it. And why not? DEMOCRATS REALLY DIDN'T CARE ENOUGH TO MAKE ANY EFFORT AT ALL.

Yep. Obama's first year as president was the year his approval rating dropped from 68% to 48% AND NEVER RECOVERED because of all the things he DIDN'T do, and all the things he DID do that were the opposite of getting justice for the average worker - failure to prosecute banksters (he actually protected them), putting the government is deep debt by endlessly shoveling money at financialism, and his failure to protect home owners.

If you think Obama had the power to punish the bankers, you have never litigated a complex case. Any banker who could afford a competent legal team could have kept the Federal Court System tied in knots for decades. I'll give you a simple legislative tactic that bypasses the slow court system: GOP Senators should threaten to remove Trump from office if he breaks a law. That can't be used on bankers, but can be used on Presidents and is brutally fast if the Senate wants it to be.

In that contest between President and the GOP Senators, the Winner is always Donald Trump

That the president of the United States chose to stage his convention speech at the White House as a flagrant violation of the Hatch Act is on some level not important.

But maybe it’s the most important thing of all.

In the earliest days of his political career it was often said Trump wouldn’t really run for president, because if he did he would “have to” release his tax returns and engage in other forms of financial disclosure. As a candidate, even Trump himself claimed to believe he would “have to” divest himself from control over his operating companies. And in the early days of his administration, he would frequently be told that on the small number of policy issues he did care about, there were various legal or constitutional reasons he couldn’t do what he wanted to do.

But as his first term enters its final months, it’s now clear to everyone that none of that is true. If I earnestly wrote that it is bad that the president of the United States is in a position to collect cash bribes in unlimited quantities through his hotels and opaque network of shell companies, I’d be laughed out of the room as hopelessly naive and a tedious bore to boot. The smart set of DC journalists who set the political agenda declared days ago that the Hatch Act is something real people don’t care about, so the same television networks that devoted more time to Hillary Clinton’s emails than all policy issues combined in 2016 feel free to ignore it.

Fundamentally, the American system of government depends on the supposition that a president’s co-partisans in Congress will be bothered by lawbreaking — especially lawbreaking that has no ideological purpose. What congressional Republicans learned about themselves in this year’s impeachment process is that they aren’t actually bothered. And now Trump knows that they know this. And they know that Trump knows that they know it. So in essence, the gloves are off, the rule of law is dead, and we’re simply left with the question of whether or not Trump’s illegal orders are followed.

Sure, Trump’s finishing speech was long, tedious, and poorly delivered. But he also used the convention to broadcast a series of blatant lies about his administration’s competency, largely uninterrupted, for 10-plus hours over the course of four nights.

And while the theme Trump pushed all week, on the side of police and law and order, could have come across flat — much like his “immigrants are coming to kill you” argument did in 2018 — events in Kenosha, Wisconsin, made the message suddenly relevant, and some Democrats are newly worried at the prospect of a Trump reelection.

For a political neophyte often caricatured by both his foes and his allies as somewhat dimwitted, it’s genuinely an impressive achievement, and it’ll be his no matter what the outcome in November.

The problem comrade kiki has SECOND. Is that the majority of Americans and the world thinks Obama was a great President. I'd say that negates any complaints she has about him.

As Trumps Presidency unfolds. Kiki finds different ways to deflect away any and all, mayhem in the streets due to Trump. Any and all, harm to our relations with our allies. Any and all, of his stupid foreign policy decisions and pandering to dictators. Any and all, of his attempts to dismantle our democratic institutions. Any and all, of his complete disregard for the rule of law. Any and all, of his trolling tweet attacks against good and honorable people. Any and all, of his thousands upon thousands of lies.

The list of Trumps any and all’s is endless. So I'll just say; all the different ways comrade kiki finds to defend him shows who she is. It also shows the issues she complains about are completely and thoroughly disingenuous. She has no real concerns, other than Trump staying in the White House.

I see you had to step in for your comrade who very obviously couldn't address the issue - by trying to derail the topic - though you can't seem to address it either.

That topic is:

And if democrats don't do any different, how are they any better?

More specifically, what did the democrats do to change the economy to help the average American worker over the past 4 decades?

Nope, the Parmenter's of any topic is what the title says they are to be. "A thread for Democrats Only." Topics are to be confined to what democrats want to discuss. Not Russian trolls. Take it from me. I created the thread comrade. So shoo...

You might want to look at the $trillions that got spent to help people out of work this year. For Democrats, they were helping those who are out of work. For the GOP, the money was to reelect Trump. Then the GOP decided Trump had not gotten a boost from all the spending, so the Senate killed $3 trillion more spending on the unemployed by the House of Representatives Democrats. www.cnn.com/2020/06/04/politics/coronavirus-stimulus-relief-money/inde

1kiki, over all those decades, don't you remember a least one damn thing about Obamacare, Medicare, Social Security, Minimum Wage, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau? Over the last 4 decades it was Democrats making those better or preventing Republicans from doing away with them completely. When Republicans are in ascendancy, they tried to kill each or, if that is not possible, make each of them worse by suing or placing incompetent administrators in charge. Sometimes the GOP succeeded in making things worse. The GOP has certainly put in their maximum effort. Just look at Obamacare, where the GOP has gone to crazy lengths to sabotage it. Fact of the Day: Manufacturing as a % of the Workforce, 1985-2020

Margaret Sullivan notes today that fact checking has outlived its usefulness:

As scholars have observed, calling out falsehoods forcefully may actually cause people to hold tighter to their beliefs. That’s the “backfire effect” that academics Brendan Nyhan and Jason Reifler wrote about in their study “When Corrections Fail” about the persistence of political misperceptions: “Direct factual contradictions can actually strengthen ideologically grounded factual beliefs.”

Fact checking has always been a mug’s game. Politicians discovered long ago that they could say anything they wanted no matter how obviously wrong it was and it would do them no harm. Any fact checking would be seen by a tiny fraction of the audience that saw the original claim, so lies were net positives no matter how upset fact checkers got about them.

Donald Trump has taken this to its logical conclusion, where he practically invents a whole different reality, but fact checking has little impact even on this. At this point, virtually everyone already believes that either (a) the media hates Trump and calls everything he says a lie, or (b) Trump lies all the time.

This is why I favor a sort of “Fact of the Day” approach to this. That is, short blurbs that simply display something in the news without reference to anything Trump has said. Like this:

Sure, Trump’s claim is false that he’s been great for manufacturing. But there’s no need to say that, which immediately loses half your audience. Just show the facts with minimal comment. Manufacturing’s share of the workforce has been declining since 1946 and it continues to decline to this day. Then let people draw their own conclusions.

A crisp and short example of the difference between Democrats and Republicans: $600 a week

Republicans were not happy. The whole thing was too big. They were particularly displeased with a Democratic proposal to expand unemployment benefits by $600 a week, which meant some unemployed workers would collect more in benefits than they had earned while working.

Mr. Mnuchin wasn’t thrilled, either, but he gave in to Democrats to speed the bill through the House. He told Republicans that it wasn’t technically feasible to tailor the size of the unemployment benefit to a worker’s previous wages.

For a while, that looked like it might be a deal breaker for Republicans. The stock market seesawed along with the perceived odds of a deal. By Friday, March 20, the S&P 500 index was down 34 percent from its February peak — below where it was when Mr. Trump took office.

Mr. Mnuchin spent the weekend working the phones, with 49 phone calls on Sunday alone, including to influential Republican senators. “We need to get this deal done today,” he told Mr. Cramer on CNBC on Monday.

Republican senators slowly got on board, fearful of the fallout if they were seen as blocking a rescue package. The Senate passed the bill, markets soared, and Mr. Trump signed the $2.2 trillion CARES Act.

At a news conference, the president declared himself pleased with “our great secretary of the Treasury.” He added, “He’s a fantastic guy and he loves our country, and he’s been dealing with both sides — Republican and Democrat.”

But Republicans were furious with Mr. Mnuchin. The $600-per-week unemployment benefit was a particular sore spot.

You better look again. Go to Federal Reserve and run your cursor along the graph at: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=uWpx

Trump's failure to bring factory jobs back to America still cost a fortune. The price of failure is the Cost of Tariffs

Like most taxes, tariffs on goods and services get passed along to consumers in the form of higher prices. The cost of these tariffs has amounted to a steady $300 per household per year, adjusted for inflation, since the Reagan era, but that changed two years ago when President Trump imposed an array of new tariffs on foreign goods. American households now pay an average of $700 each in tariffs, more than double what they’ve paid under previous administrations.

Mister Working Class, why are you so glum?

"I am glum because I have a $300 Payday Loan - Bi-Weekly Consumer Disclosure from Speedycash. The interest rate is 730% !"
www.speedycash.com/rates-and-terms/Texas

Payday loan companies, operating off the internet, want to expand into states with Democrats controlling state banking. The Democrats resist, but the Republicans are changing the rules to bring 730% APR loans to Mister Working Class in every state:

In late May, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, which regulates federally chartered banks, finalized a rule that would supercharge the online lending industry by bowling over the state interest rate limits that currently protect consumers. In June, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation finalized an equivalent rule that would cover the state-chartered financial institutions that currently dominate the online lending industry.

The attorneys general of California, New York, and Illinois have sued the OCC, contending that its rule violates federal banking law and other statutes, “and would facilitate predatory lending.” If those rules stand, borrowers in many states will face even higher interest rates than they do today, with state regulators powerless to stop them. A second lawsuit targets the FDIC rule.

The OCC is now taking comments on a separate proposed rule that declares a national bank the “true lender” in any partnership, further adding to fintechs’ ability to sidestep state banking regulations.

1kiki, the GOP will powerfully oppose, and eventually kill if the GOP has at least 34 Senators, this idea of creating 25,000,000 jobs because decarbonizing America would reduce production of oil and natural gas, the industry that contributes most to Trump's reelection campaign.

More specifically, what did the democrats do to change the economy to help the average American worker over the past 4 decades?

President Donald Trump has vowed to kill funding for a critical, gargantuan program that nearly 70 million Americans depend on.

What? You haven’t heard Trump say he wants to kill Social Security’s funding? Actually, you have. Trump says he wants to kill the payroll tax — which is how Social Security is funded.

Perhaps like many Americans, you’re unaware of how Social Security is financed. It comes from payroll taxes that are paid by you and your employer. The past four years have convinced me that there are many other things that Trump’s supporters don’t seem to understand either (trade/tariffs, regulations, the stock market, etc.) but I digress.

“If victorious on November 3rd,” the president said on Aug. 8th, “I plan to forgive these taxes and make permanent cuts to the payroll tax.” He then added: “I’m going to make them all permanent.”

So when Trump talks of a “payroll tax cut,” you might think that sounds great. A tax cut! But this is deceptive election year politics, designed to take advantage of voter ignorance. Anyone in the media that’s going along with Trump’s framing of this as a mere tax cut is also being played.

It doesn’t get more delusional than this except, perhaps, for kooky Trump advisers like economist Stephen Moore, and even Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who has said that Social Security could always be paid for by moving trillions of dollars from the government’s “general fund to those trusts funds.”

Trillions of dollars from the general fund? What trillions of dollars? The federal deficit for fiscal year 2019 that ended last Sept. 30 was $984 billion. It has nearly quadrupled this year to a staggering $3.7 trillion, and this will skyrocket even further if another round of pandemic aid gets passed. These sums — so vast as to be nearly incomprehensible — get added on to the national debt, which as of last week was $26.6 trillion, up 33.6% on Trump’s watch.

Remember: Trump said he would eliminate the entire national debt — not the deficit, the national debt itself — in eight years, because of all the brilliant trade deals he would do. Here we are four years later and things are worse, far worse, than ever.

Yep. I see dead people ... I mean, democrats.

And if democrats don't do any different, how are they any better?

What I see is Trump gave a ridiculous order that won't be obeyed because Congress did not pass a law to stop collecting the FICA taxes.

The House of Representatives can't stop Trump from being ridiculous. That's not the House's problem. It is the problem of the GOP Senate to slap Trump in the face and demand he stop being an idiot:

On Aug. 28, the IRS issued Notice 2020-65, allowing employers to suspend withholding and paying to the IRS eligible employees' Social Security payroll taxes, as part of COVID-19 relief.

The payroll tax "holiday," or suspension period, runs from Sept. 1 through Dec. 31, 2020, and applies only to employees whose wages are less than $4,000 for a biweekly pay period, including salaried workers earning less than $104,000 per year.

Companies that suspend collection of employees' payroll tax would collect additional amounts from workers' paychecks from Jan. 1 through April 30 next year to repay the tax obligation.

President Donald Trump sent a memorandum on Aug. 8 to the Treasury Department to defer collection of the employee portion of Social Security from Sept. 1 through the end of 2020.

Bare Bones Guidance

At just 2 1/2 double-spaced pages, Notice 2020-65 provides a minimum amount of information and leaves many questions to be answered, presumably in follow-up guidance.

As to whether employers will comply with the notice and suspend employees' Social Security FICA withholding, "It's too early to say," according to Pete Isberg, vice president of government relations at HR and payroll services firm ADP Inc. Employers "are just now considering how the program would work."

Isberg said that whether to suspend withholding of employees' payroll tax was in effect "voluntary." Although the language of the notice is directive, it includes no penalties for noncompliance.

It remains uncertain, however, how many private-sector employers will suspend collection of their employees' Social Security taxes, and, if they decide to do so, when they could reasonably adjust their payroll systems to stop withholding these taxes.

If employers suspend Social Security payroll tax withholding for eligible employees, the guidance does not provide for allowing individuals to opt out, which had been an administrative concern employers had raised.
