What we know about Trump:

Trump’s Super Bowl interview was 8 minutes of pettiness and empty braggadocio

In a lightning round, in which Hannity encouraged the president to say the first thing that came to mind, Trump attacked Democratic presidential candidates.

“Look at Sleepy Joe, what’s going on with him? He’s having a hard time,” Trump said of former Vice President Joe Biden. He accused Sen. Elizabeth Warren of being a liar, saying, “I call her ‘Fairy Tale’ because everything’s a fairy tale ... this woman can’t tell the truth.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders, Trump claimed, is a “communist” who got married in Russia. The claim prompted Hannity’s only attempt to correct the president; the Fox News personality reminded him that Sanders actually took a trip to the then-Soviet Union shortly after his marriage, and that he wasn’t married there.

Given 8 minutes to address the nation, Trump spent it not answering pressing questions of national concern but attacking his rivals in incredibly petty ways.

A zombie idea is a belief or doctrine that has repeatedly been proved false, but refuses to die; instead, it just keeps shambling along, eating people’s brains. The ultimate zombie in American politics is the assertion that tax cuts pay for themselves — a claim that has been proved wrong again and again over the past 40 years. But there are other zombies, like climate change denial, that play an almost equally large role in our political discourse.

And all of the really important zombies these days are on the right. Indeed, they have taken over the Republican Party.

It was not always thus. Back in 1980 George H.W. Bush called Ronald Reagan’s extravagant claims about the effectiveness of tax cuts “voodoo economic policy.” Everything that has happened since has vindicated his original assessment. Deficits ballooned after Reagan cut taxes; they shrank and eventually turned into surpluses after Bill Clinton raised taxes, then ballooned again after George W. Bush’s tax cuts.

Voodoo has also crashed and burned at the state level: The Kansas experiment in radical tax cuts was a dismal failure, while California’s tax hike under Jerry Brown, which conservatives declared a case of “economic suicide,” was followed by a revenue and economic boom.

Yet voodoo economics has become unchallengeable doctrine within the Republican Party. Even fake moderates like Susan Collins justified their support for the 2017 Trump tax cut by claiming that it would reduce the budget deficit. Predictably, the deficit actually exploded, and now exceeds $1 trillion a year.

The politics of climate change have followed a similar trajectory. Global temperature keeps setting records, while climate-related catastrophes like the Australian wildfires are proliferating. Yet a majority of Republicans in Congress are climate deniers — many of them buying into the notion that climate change is a hoax perpetrated by a vast international scientific conspiracy — and even those, like Marco Rubio, who grudgingly admit that global warming is real oppose any significant action to limit emissions.

Zombie ideas have been eating Republican brains for decades. Voodoo economics had completely taken over the party by the early 2000s, when then-House majority leader Tom DeLay declared, “Nothing is more important in the face of war than cutting taxes.” Climate deniers have ruled since at least 2009, when only eight House Republicans supported a bill to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate models used to forecast warming have suddenly started giving us less time

Bloomberg reports:
www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2020-02-03/climate-models-are-running-
red-hot-and-scientists-don-t-know-why

There are dozens of climate models, and for decades they’ve agreed on what it would take to heat the planet by about 3° Celsius. It’s an outcome that would be disastrous—flooded cities, agricultural failures, deadly heat—but there’s been a grim steadiness in the consensus among these complicated climate simulations.

Then last year, unnoticed in plain view, some of the models started running very hot. The scientists who hone these systems used the same assumptions about greenhouse-gas emissions as before and came back with far worse outcomes. Some produced projections in excess of 5°C, a nightmare scenario.

The scientists involved couldn’t agree on why — or if the results should be trusted. Climatologists began “talking to each other like, ‘What’d you get?’, ‘What’d you get?’” said Andrew Gettelman, a senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, which builds a high-profile climate model.

“The question is whether they’ve overshot,” said Mark Zelinka, staff scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Researchers are starting to put together answers, a task that will take months at best, and there’s not yet agreement on how to interpret the hotter results. The reason for worry is that these same models have successfully projected global warming for a half century. Their output continues to frame all major scientific, policy and private-sector climate goals and debates, including the sixth encyclopedic assessment by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change due out next year. If the same amount of climate pollution will bring faster warming than previously thought, humanity would have less time to avoid the worst impacts.

Like Russiagate or about a hundred other things from the last three years you could throw into that story that would fit.

One of them is already in the story. The part about Clinton fixing the economy. When in reality that was a short term boon at the cost of long term pain and loss. It's what the Democrats specialize in. Just ask anybody in Chicago about the great bargain Mayor Daley made selling the parking meter revenue to Middle East interests.

Chicago received $1,156,500,000 in 2008 for 36,000 parking meters. That is $32,125 per meter. Matt Taibbi thinks Chicago should have got $138,889 per meter. I think Matt is too greedy. As for the average Chicago resident, they would have no idea how to Calculate Net Present Value for their parking meters.

You failed to mention how long Chicago will be without any parking meter revenue and the fact that the Chicago police still need to enforce them on the taxpayer dollar.

SPOILER ALERT: Everybody here will be long dead before that contract expires. Probably four or five decades before it does.

I agree that Chicagoans are stupid and 99% can't understand how to calculate the present value of a stream of revenue stretching out over 75 years. They are also stupid to sell their parking meters mainly because they don't want to pay taxes for running the day-to-day operation of their city. But, if self-driving cars become common in Chicago, the revenue from parking meters will go to zero since the cars drive away and never have to park downtown. In that case, selling the parking meters for $1.16 Billion will seem to be brilliant in retrospect from the year 2050, since parking meters are now worthless unless you drive an antique car that still has a steering wheel.

Trump awards Rush Limbaugh the Nation’s highest honor during the State of the Union in an accurate assessment of how we all got here.

Said Trump, “He is the greatest fighter and winner that you will ever meet, Rush Limbaugh. Thank you for your decades of devotion to our country. And Rush, in recognition of all you have done for our nation — the millions of people today that you speak to and that you inspire and all of the incredible work you have done for charity — I am proud to announce tonight you will be receiving our country’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.”

This is appropriate; as the increasingly prominent voice of sour, sarcastic, nasty white-male contempt, Limbaugh did contribute a great deal to our changing American society. Thirty-five years ago, he was a small-time radio host on a station in Sacramento. Twenty-five years ago, he was being cited as an inspiration by hard-line Republican congressmen and radio imitators like Indianapolis-area personality Mike Pence. Pence would go on to write, in a Rush-style 2001 “reality check” column, that connections between smoking and fatal disease are overblown by nanny-state politicians and “the media.” Limbaugh, an ostentatious cigar smoker, has lung cancer.

Quote:

Other cities looked to Chicago’s parking meter deal and they concluded that this was really not the way to go. It turns out that just 13 years into the deal, by 2021, the investors will recoup their entire $1.15 billion investment. So that leaves them with 62 years just to rake in profits.

If EVERYBODY isn't using self driving cars in Chicago by next year, they've already lost money.

Quote:

if Chicago ever wants to take a parking space out of service, it has to pay exorbitant fees. This means that it’s really hard for the city to do things like build bus lanes, build bike lanes, plant trees … and this comes at a time when demand for parking in the United States and worldwide is declining, and cities are really starting to rethink what their streets can do. So really what Mayor Lightfoot needs to do is renegotiate the deal so that it gives the city autonomy to control its streets again.

AND if the city wants to do something, they have to pay exorbitant fees to the owners for every parking meter that is out of commission until the work is done. They paid out $20,000,000 last year alone.

AND the city police who are paid by the tax payers have to manage them and do all the work while these people sit back and collect the money.

AND when they recoup their investment next year, they still have 62 more years of sitting back and collecting money.

Sorry Donald, But California Is Kicking Ass

Last night, as Donald Trump was taking one of his usual shots at the socialist hellhole of California, I womped up a chart of economic growth by state since the end of the Great Recession. California turned out to be the fastest growing big state in the country.

But you might have missed it, so let’s do it again. This time, though, let’s do growth of per capita GDP so we account for population growth. Here are the results for the ten biggest states in the nation:

This time it’s not even a close call. California is by far the fastest growing state since 2010, posting an increase in per capita state product from $55,000 to $68,000. Trump can throw out all the insults he wants about climate change, immigrants, and regulations, but the numbers don’t lie. California is kicking ass.

While many conservatives continue to argue that LBJ’s Great Society constituted a massive failure, the programs created a basic floor of rights and benefits that most Americans now consider part of the fundamental fabric of our nation. When Johnson became president, Congress was as gridlocked as today. In the early 1960s, a bipartisan coalition of southern Democrats and Republicans who controlled the major committees refused to allow most liberal policies to pass through their gates, especially civil rights laws to end desegregation and ensure the protection of voting rights. It was unclear whether LBJ would be able to break the roadblock that had stifled Kennedy on most issues.

It took enormous grassroots activism to break through. The Great Society could get started only because the civil rights movement created unbearable pressure on members of Congress to support the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

When Johnson delivered his Great Society speech on May 22, 1964, at the University of Michigan, he called Americans to a higher purpose. In the midst of social convulsions and divisions, Johnson offered a vision of American freedom born of our bedrock values -- tolerance, pluralism and the rule of law -- and he challenged Americans to extend the benefits and responsibilities of those values to everyone, expanding our notion of American citizenship.

Johnson's argument was simple: For America to fulfill its purpose, it needed to expand its definition of freedom to include all Americans, and in so doing build a country where actual economic opportunity might, for the first time, accompany that freedom.

The policy outcomes of Johnson's clarion call remain unprecedented. The Great Society guaranteed health care coverage to the elderly and the medically indigent, ended legally sanctioned segregation, and made it possible for millions of younger Americans to attend colleges and universities, often for the first time in their families' history.

In addition to Medicare, Medicaid, civil rights legislation and the Higher Education Act, in a relatively short span of time Congress also passed federal aid for elementary education, food stamps, Head Start, immigration reform that ended the quota system put into place in 1924, arts funding, a war on poverty and more.

Even as detractors raged against the changes taking hold, those on the left and right built on Johnson's foundation. Richard Nixon's Environmental Protection Agency was the fruit of Johnson's environmental protection legislation. Tea Party activists holding up signs that read "Keep Your Government Hands Off My Medicare" as they opposed President Obama's Affordable Care Act proposal was a significant expression of acceptance on the right of the basic premise of the Great Society.

I'm not talking about GDP.

I'm talking about people fleeing the state. Those numbers don't get displaced by illegals either, except in the diseased far-leftist brain.

It's cool. though. It will be people who won't vote Democrat who are leaving California.

Democrats have turned that state into a shithole, and they are also taxing everybody out of Illinois as well.

CODE RED
How Progressives and Moderates Can Unite to Save Our Country
By E. J. Dionne Jr.

E. J. Dionne Jr. has spent a career searching for common ground among opposing groups, in the hope that it can become the foundation of a politics of consensus. In books like “Why Americans Hate Politics” (1991) and “Our Divided Political Heart” (2012), he tried to chart a course between left and right, suggesting that if we peer across the political divide with clearer eyes and more open minds, we can begin to build a postpolarization politics.

As part of this endeavor, he has often chided the right for its mounting extremism, but he never wrote it off. Which is why Dionne’s latest book should send our alarm bells shrieking. Though written in the same patient, even soothing, voice as his earlier works, the narrowed scope of “Code Red: How Progressives and Moderates Can Unite to Save Our Country” shows how much his view of politics has changed. The right barely factors into this new bridge-building project. Conservatives are, for all intents and purposes, a lost cause.

This means “Code Red” is not yet another call for bipartisanship (thank goodness). Nor is it a plea for centrism, which in an earlier era had been a defining feature of Dionne’s work. Here he has abandoned the idea of a center poised between left and right. “The political center cannot be defined as a halfway point between Democrats and a Republican Party that has veered far to the right,” Dionne writes. Instead it is something to be negotiated within the Democratic Party.

As a result, Dionne pleads with moderates and progressives to see one another as allies who have far more in common than they might think. And while his past calls for political unity seem to have failed, there’s reason to hope this one might succeed. The rise of Donald Trump and the radicalization of the right have been unifying forces for moderates and progressives. While the two factions disagree sharply on proposals like Medicare for All and the Green New Deal, they share a distress and disgust with the Trump presidency and the growing right-wing extremism that preceded it.

What is wrong with Bernie, Biden and Warren? They are too damn old. Trump is too old, but he is also a criminal.

Didn't you want the system disrupted? Where the rich guys are worried about their future? Or do you want to keep the same old status quo that Trump is guaranteeing? Trump promised, I don't know what you think he promised, but did he deliver? If you say that he will deliver in his next 4 to 8 to 12 years, you are gonna be screwed by him. But that's okay with me, that you are being screwed, because the status quo exalts the power and fortune of people who are already too powerful and fortunate. You know? I am a hypocrite for not voting Trump and Pence 2020. This I suddenly realized. I will vote only for Republicans from here on.

The fate of the world depends on the Democratic Party getting its shit together and winning the Senate in November. – James Carville

James Carville, longtime Democratic strategist:
“Eighteen percent of the population controls 52 Senate seats,” James Carville said. “We’ve got to be a majoritarian party. The urban core is not gonna get it done. What we need is power! Do you understand? That’s what this is about.”

In 2018, Democrats recruited really strong candidates, really qualified candidates. And the party said, “This is what we’re going to talk about and we’re going to keep talking about it.” And you know what happened? We fucking won. We didn’t get distracted, we didn’t get deflected.

But today we have candidates on the debate stage talking about open borders and decriminalizing illegal immigration. They’re talking about doing away with nuclear energy and fracking. You’ve got Bernie Sanders talking about letting criminals and terrorists vote from jail cells. It doesn’t matter what you think about any of that, or if there are good arguments — talking about that is not how you win the Senate. It’s not how you become a majoritarian party.

For fuck’s sake, we’ve got Trump at Davos talking about cutting Medicare and no one in the party has the sense to plaster a picture of him up there sucking up to the global elites, talking about cutting taxes for them while he’s talking about cutting Medicare back home. Jesus, this is so obvious and so easy and I don’t see any of the candidates taking advantage of it.

The Republicans have destroyed their party and turned it into a personality cult, but if anyone thinks they can’t win, they’re out of their damn minds.

Look, Bernie Sanders isn’t a Democrat. He’s never been a Democrat. He’s an ideologue. And I’ve been clear about this: If Bernie is the nominee, I’ll vote for him. No question. I’ll take an ideological fanatic over a career criminal any day. But he’s not a Democrat.

Sean Illing
You know people are going to read this and say, “Carville backed Clinton in 2016. So did the Democratic establishment. They blew it in 2016. Why should I care what any of them think now?”

James Carville
People will say anything. And first of all, Clinton won the popular vote by almost three million. And secondly, the Russians put Jill Stein in front of Clinton’s campaign to depress votes. And thirdly, the New York Times a week before an election, assured its readers that the Russians were not even trying to help Trump. And then they wrote 15,000 stories about Hillary’s emails.

But back to Sanders — what I’m saying is the Democratic Party isn’t Bernie Sanders, whatever you think about Sanders.

Sean Illing
Are we really sure Sanders can’t win?

James Carville
Who the hell knows? But here’s what I do know: Sanders might get 280 electoral votes and win the presidency and maybe we keep the House. But there’s no chance in hell we’ll ever win the Senate with Sanders at the top of the party defining it for the public. Eighteen percent of the country elects more than half of our senators. That’s the deal, fair or not.

So long as McConnell runs the Senate, it’s game over. There’s no chance we’ll change the courts and nothing will happen, and Bernie will just be sitting up there screaming in the microphone about the revolution.

Sean Illing
What’s the answer?

James Carville
By framing, repeating, and delivering a coherent, meaningful message that is relevant to people’s lives and having the political skill not to be sucked into every rabbit hole that somebody puts in front of you.

The Democratic Party is becoming a party of educated suburbanites, particularly women. It’s the party of Latinos. We’re a party of immigrants. Most of the people aren’t into all this distracting shit about open borders and letting prisoners vote. They don’t care. They have lives to lead. They have kids. They have parents that are sick. That’s what we have to talk about. That’s all we should talk about.

It’s not that this other stuff doesn’t matter. And it’s not that we shouldn’t talk about race. We have to talk about race. But it’s about how you deliver and frame the message. I thought Cory Booker’s “baby bonds” plan was great and the kind of thing the party could connect to people’s actual lives.

We have a moral imperative here and that’s beating Trump and taking the Senate. Right now the most important thing is getting this career criminal who’s stealing everything that isn’t nailed down out of the White House.

I'd love it if there was more disruption. We've had a record number of people who have quit, been fired and/or been disgraced in only three years. Hopefully now that the impeachment sham is over they get the ball rolling and a lot more are to come.

As for Democrats, I want nothing to do with their brand of revolution. They don't even bother trying to lie about the fact that everything they want is directly against the best interests of me and people I care about. Anybody who takes a benign word like Nationalism and tries to turn it into a bad word needs to GTFO and go find some third world shithole to turn into their Socialist Utopia. It ain't happening here.

American Factory – best movie ever on globalization and the future of work

At the Academy Awards tomorrow, the movie American Factory is heavily favored to win the Best Documentary Feature category. It is a remarkable film and would be a deserving winner. American Factory also just might be the most thoughtful movie ever made on how globalization may impact the future of work.

The movie, which was produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground, is now available on Netflix.

The movie documents the opening of a Fuyao Glass factory in the small city of Moraine, Ohio and takes place from 2015 to 2017. Fuyao Glass is a Chinese company worth nearly $60 billion that supplies glass to major automobile manufacturers like Ford and General Motors. The factory in Moraine, which is still operating, was Fuyao’s first venture into the US. The plant employs over 2,000 people.

The film-makers said: This factory has good benefits but the pay is not great. It starts very low. They fought the union very hard.

The role of union-avoidance companies was a real surprise and awakening for us. Fuyao hired a consultant team whose specialty is convincing the workforce that it would be bad for them to have a union. They had a huge impact, we believe, on the union election. There is a well-established playbook and messaging. In the film, they told the workers, “Keep your voice, vote no against the union.” It’s sort of Orwellian in how the language is used to dissuade people from organizing together.

The Chinese management were really frustrated with the Americans because they didn’t work fast enough. They didn’t do what they were supposed to do right away.

American Factory, Documentary
In post-industrial Ohio, a Chinese billionaire opens a new factory in the husk of an abandoned General Motors plant, hiring two thousand blue-collar Americans. Early days of hope and optimism give way to setbacks as high-tech China clashes with working-class America.

The Founder of the company in a direct quote from the movie subtitles: “American workers are not efficient, and output is low. I can't manage them. When we try to manage them, they threaten to get help from the union. How can we make Americans understand that the Chinese can open factories in America? This is a big problem.”

I presume the Founder meant that he could open a factory in America with 90% Chinese employees rather than 10% Chinese employees and his factory would run much smoother. Comparing what I saw in the movie of different employees working, I can believe he is right about the Asians. But maybe only the best Chinese workers get a chance to come to America to get the same wages as Americans.

This is the false paradigm constantly presented to American workers: You have to compete against low-wage workers elsewhere, or against automation, or you die. Shame on the Obamas for supporting that message. (I always knew they were transnational stoolies.)

IF you have a self-sufficient economy then you can have a closed-loop production/ consumption cycle largely independent of what's going on in the rest of the world. The false paradigm is that factories are built to create more jobs rather than more automobile windows like the movie’s Fuyao Glass factory in Moraine, Ohio. If the goal was more jobs, the Federal government would be insisting on higher hourly wage rates and paying all factories to remove automation and do more and more work by hand. If you saw the movie, the factory was adding robots so that workers could be laid off.

Also, it was funny to the Chinese workers that the American workers needed training and then more retraining because they “forget”, while the Chinese did not. I don't know what’s going on in the American worker’s brain, but stupidity, laziness, featherbedding, clumsiness, boredom, and indifference to quality are some possibilities.

By the way, a Chinese worker living in America can only catch Wuhan coronavirus from Americans since the Chinese workers aren’t flying back to China every four weeks for a vacation. They are here to stay until their contract is over or visa expires, whichever comes first.

The Chinese worker, even the highly skilled ones, get the same work done for nickles on the dollar that the American worker makes. And that's not even including benefits packages and insurance premiums.

Most of that "training" you speak of isn't about how to do their job. It's government mandated safety training and re-certification that is required to maintain employment. This has even bled down to the lowly retail sector where retail proles are required to re-certify on all of the safety issues on a yearly basis for every part of the store. Even things that do not pertain in the slightest bit to their job description, such as proper food storage and cooking temperatures for deli and bakery staff to a shelf stocker.

Thank Bill Clinton for all of this, Second. Never in a million years could America compete with Chinese low wages. Even if these factory workers made minimum wage, they're still getting paid more than Chinese workers.

You were posting about the possibility of replacing the American workers with Chinese workers now, not the current 10% of factory staff who have been here for a while. I doubt very much that those potential replacements could get work visas for the USA.

China is not (IMHO) a "communist" nation, it is a quasi-fascist nation.

Now, a lot of people throw the term around very very loosely to mean "anyone I don't like" but FASCISM is an ECONOMIC system, not a political ideology, and what it means is that the government has melded with business to serve business interests. (Sounds a bit like the USA, right?)

The interests of the Chinese government is to out-compete production anywhere in the world. In its march towards industrialization, China was not above using prison/slave labor, and not above using labor in factory-dorms (with suicide netting to catch those who try to jump from their miserable existence) and cheap migrant labor (where people leave their home provinces thru which they receive government benefits like medical and education) and flock to the manufacturing hubs. (BTW, that is a significant problem in quelling the Wuhan virus.)

China HAS to do this because they don't have enough resources to be self-sufficient ... like Japan, China's biggest resource is its people.

Do we WANT to follow that paradigm?

BTW: what are Americans' interests?

The correct question is What are Texans' interests? Remember I am from Texas. It was big mistake for Texas, a nation, to join with 49 other states with 98 Senators who don't give a goddamn about Texas. Texas could actual function as a nation, while places like Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska and the Dakotas could not. It was a mistake to join the Confederacy, too. Sam Houston, the governor of Texas and before that President of Texas, was impeached because he would not sign the papers to join the Confederacy. He knew too late that it was a mistake to join the USA. Joining the Confederacy was doubling down on that mistake.

I am a Texan, first. I fought that stupid fucking war in Vietnam for the USA, actually for that crook Richard Nixon. That changed everything when I saw how stupid one hundred Senators could be about the Vietnam War. The Senate has only gotten stupider since then: Eighteen percent of the population controls 52 Senate seats. This is a ridiculous arrangement made to get low population states Delaware, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut to join the Union. It is not 1787 anymore and it would not be a problem for Texas if the tiny states lost all their Senators. If the tiny states with small populations don't like it, let them declare themselves tiny nations and join the UN.

So because YOU were stupid enough to get gulled into fighting a war, you wind up hating everyone? Blaming everyone else: It's just your way of avoiding personal responsibility for your own bad decision.

But aside from that, given that you're obviously driven by a blind hatred worse than mere TDS, why should anyone take anything that you post seriously? You're obviously not at all objective, can't carry on a rational conversation because you can't keep a rational train of thought going in your head, all you do is hate ... hate ... hate ...

I've known for some time that you're "damaged goods". Like WISHY, something happened to you in your youth that has entirely kinked your personality. You must have been able to avoid significant negotiations all your life. You keep repeating What are Americans' interests? There are no common interests. You discover what you can agree on only by keeping it extremely simple: Will you do this for that? As soon as you expand it beyond the most primitive trading, at least in America, war breaks out. Happens in Congress every day it is in session for the last 50 years.

Possibly this rush to conflict is connected to Americans reading too often the Bible book of Revelation. God does not negotiate or find common interest. He goes directly to Armageddon. Americans are fundamentally primitive, as the Bible taught them to be. Americans drop nukes on the children of Hiroshima and declare that bombing a glorious victory and necessary justice. Or Americans drop more bombs on SOUTH Vietnam, America's friend, then were dropped in all of WWII.

If this thing you are so vague about actually existed, wouldn't we know about it? Here are two simple as hell examples of why it does not exist:

Minimum Wage: We believe the Minimum Wage Act should be repealed.
Social Security Opt-Out: We support reform to Social Security that allows people to opt out.
The GOP's list of interests is 334 items long.
www.texasgop.org/platform/

I hope you can see how incompatible repealing the Minimum Wage is with what about half of Americans want. The Opt-Out is slightly trickier. It cannot coexist with Social Security continuing the same benefits or more. Social Security falls apart as would Federal Income tax collection fall apart if people could opt out by signing a form that they won't pay Federal taxes and they will renounce receiving protection from the Department of Defense/EPA/FBI/Medicare/whatever.

Everything on the list of GOP's interests is in direct conflict with everything on the list of Democrats' interests. This makes it impossible to know What are Americans' Interests. You will need at least two non-intersecting lists of Americans' Interests, one for Republicans, one for Democrats.

SECOND doesn't ** really ** hate republicans. Or if he does, he loves his food bowl more. The reason I know that is because he refuses to exert any effort or spend any money to defeat, or at least damage, republicans.

Naw. His so-called ** hate ** is merely his excuse to exercise his own mental pathologies.

And if democrats don't do anything different, how are they any better?

What Americans "want" may not necessarily be in their interest. Americans, unfortunately, have been fed bullshit from babyhood. Can we get past that?

And picking two extremely narrow programs to demonstrate that Americans have "no" interested in common is dishonest, just like you.

Let's start from the basics: Most Americans (except possibly anorexics, those with pica and some other pathologies) have an interest in access to tasty, nutritious food. Correct?

Second doesn't actually have any money. We already know he's a liar, but that's the problem with locking yourself in a corner with a big lie like this one and not confessing you were lying. It puts you in a position where you're a liar and a hypocrite too.

Let's start from the basics: Most Americans (except possibly anorexics, those with pica and some other pathologies) have an interest in access to tasty, nutritious food. Correct?

If we were talking about nutritious food, a D and R would get into a fight about whether any particular fruit, vegetable or grain was nutritious. Then they would argue about how much salt and sugar and fat can be added before it is no longer nutritious food. Please look at www.texasgop.org/platform/

It is 334 wants or interests by Republicans and most of those interests are as crazy as hell. 87 is an exception: "War Powers: Congress shall not abdicate the war powers to the executive branch except when under imminent threat and not to be used as a preemptive strike unless approved by Congress." But the very next one, 88, makes abortion murder.

The starting point of a discussion should be what a Democrat wants: www.texasdemocrats.org/our-party/texas-democratic-party-platform/

Well, we might not all agree on "nutritious" (vegans and carnivores especially; given my number of food allergies I would hardly be the one to have a prescribed list of foods) but I didn't say everyone HAD to eat the same thing, just that we would have access to a wide variety of minimally-processed foods - yanno, meat, fish, eggs, milk and milk products, nuts, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains from which people can make their selection. You see? Easy peasy.

How about the next item: Is it in Americans' interests to be able to get enough sleep?

Yes. Go to the next item: Is it in Americans' interest to have pure, clean tap water? Republicans have an interest: #245. Fluoride in Water Supply -- The Republican Party of Texas supports banning the fluoridation of the Texas water supply. See how nuts the GOP is?
www.texasgop.org/platform/

One more. Is it in Americans' interest to have pure air? Republicans have an interest: #13. Carbon Tax -- We oppose all efforts to classify carbon dioxide as a pollutant. We further urge the US Senate to defeat the “Cap-and-Trade” legislation, as it is outside the authority of the US Constitution. See how nuts the GOP is?
www.texasgop.org/platform/

That brings up another Republican interest: #16. “Climate change” is a political agenda promoted to control every aspect of our lives. We support the defunding of “climate justice” initiatives, the abolition of the Environmental Protection Agency, and repeal of the Endangered Species Act. See how nuts the GOP is?

Ok, we have several areas of agreement.

BTW, I'm not a big fan of water fluoridation. Tooth decay rates have fallen everywhere, not just in areas where water is fluoridated. I think it's more important that people have access to uncontaminated water, rather than fluoridated water, and generally-speaking well-water (high in magnesium) is better than surface water. But, I would not propose adding magnesium to water either.

Carbon dioxide is not a TOXIC pollutant. It makes no difference whether you breathe 200 ppmv, 400 ppmv, or 600 ppmv. The upper limit on carbon dioxide in breathing air is about 1000 ppmv, well above environmental levels and more of a "sick building syndrome" or concern for people breathing bottled air, like SCUBAdivers. The inclusion of carbon dioxide as an air pollutant is to mitigate its climatological effects, not health effects.

I'm against cap-and-trade as a regulatory strategy, and I'm not nuts either.

Instead of looking for areas of disagreement, is it possible for you to look for areas of agreement?

BTW, I want to know what YOU think, not what "Texas Republicans" think.

How about abolitionists and slave-owners finding "areas of agreement"? The disagreement ran four score and seven years, ending with a million dead. That takes precedence over "areas of agreement". At the time they were having this disagreement they did not foresee where it would end. Today the GOP has a disagreement with the entire world about how many will die from climate change. Remember Republican interest #16? “Climate change” is a political agenda promoted to control every aspect of our lives. We support the defunding of “climate justice” initiatives, the abolition of the Environmental Protection Agency, and repeal of the Endangered Species Act. Climate change seems so small now, but the death toll can be huge (bigger than the Civil War) and we thank the GOP for making it possible since they are nuts.

Wrong, 6ix. All those so-called "Democrats" of the Confederacy are long dead. It's a different party now, using an old name, which was a big branding mistake. That conflict between abolitionists and slave-holders started as words, got hotter and hotter, and finally escalated to murder of Americans. Other countries had abolitionists and slave-holders but did not end with mass murder to decide who was right. Maybe Americans are unusually incapable of understanding alternative values? Who knows? You can read about the endless yak-yak-yakking of the slave-holders defending their beliefs in the book "The Peculiar Institution". All that talk changed nobody's mind. An election couldn't fix what was wrong. But maybe this time things end differently.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Peculiar_Institution

Once again, look at the GOP platform. www.texasgop.org/platform/

Nearly every item of 334 items is incompatible with everything the rest of the world and most Democrats believe is right. The American slave-holders had the same problem of beliefs incompatible with the rest of the world.

Well, show me the slave owners! They don't exist, do they?

So what is THE intractable division between Americans? Surely it's not slavery, or water fluoridation!

That's funny. Because in 2020 I have to hear all the time from New Democrats about how I'm evil because I'm white and male and I get blamed for what those Democrats you choose not to associate with did.

If it weren't for double standards, you people would have no standards at all.

New Party. Just as racist as ever.
