Stephen Colbert took a look at journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s disappearance and probable murder at the hands of the Saudi Arabian government on Monday, excoriating Donald Trump over his astonishingly cotton-brained solution to the easiest murder mystery in the history of the world. That theory again, in the President of the United States’ own words, just in case you had any national pride left:

"The King firmly denied any knowledge of it. He didn’t really know. Maybe—I don’t want to get into his mind—but it sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers. Who knows!"

Trump’s theory became inoperative later on in the day, when CNN broke the news that the Saudis were preparing to admit they’d killed Khashoggi in an interrogation gone wrong. Colbert was not impressed with anyone involved in the whole fiasco, and said so.

Besides popping another one of Trump’s leaky trial balloons, Colbert does a good job pointing out that the Saudi Arabian “interrogation-gone-wrong” explanation is almost as ludicrous as the president’s Columbo act:

"Let me ask an obvious question: Any interrogation that includes 15 men and a bone saw — how does that go right?"

It’s not easy to wring laughter from the constant grim reminders that we’re ruled by thieves and murderers, so cheers to Colbert and his writers.

Getting voters to the polls was the unspoken theme of Cruz-O’Rourke debate

Cruz painted an image of Texas values being under assault from a socialist wave, with O'Rourke in the mold of Democratic socialist Bernie Sanders, billionaire socialist financier George Soros and former first lady Hillary Clinton.

The goal was to cast Beto O'Rourke as a threat to the Texas way of life, said Rice University political science professor Mark P. Jones.

Cruz drove home the point when he told O'Rourke during one exchange that being there for Texans means fighting for them, and "not George Soros, not big liberal interests, but fighting for the values of Texas."

Later Cruz was asked to say something positive about O'Rourke. He responded in terms calculated to fire up his own base.

"Bernie Sanders believes in what he's fighting for, he believes in socialism," Cruz said from the stage at McFarlin Auditorium at Southern Methodist University. "Now I think what he's fighting for doesn't work, but I think you are absolutely sincere, like Bernie, that you believe in expanding government and higher taxes — and I commend you for fighting for what you believe in."

(O'Rourke calls for banning some types of guns, legalizing marijuana, preserving Obamacare and defending athletes who kneel during the national anthem. Polls show a majority of Texans disagree with him on those issues.)

Professor Jones said for O'Rourke it was about presenting himself to black voters as a credible champion on those issues and enough of an ally that it's worth showing up in big — even historic — numbers to vote for him on election day.

Turnout in Texas mid-term elections has generally been among the worst in the nation. In 2014, just 4.6 million of Texas's then 14 million voters cast ballots in the midterm elections. That's just 34 percent of the state's registered voters and 25 percent of the voting age population in Texas. No midterm race has had more than 40 percent turnout since 1998.

A reminder about how Republicans go about the job of being re-elected:

Chapter 25 from Vietnam, an Epic Tragedy by Max Hastings

‘It Will Absolutely, Totally, Wipe Out McGovern’
(Note that McGovern was running against President Nixon in 1972)

Henry Kissinger achieved superstar status for his role in negotiating the settlement that promised to extricate his country from its quagmire. In October 1972, both the American people and the national security adviser convinced themselves that his brilliant diplomacy had brought the Paris talks close to an outcome. In truth, however, the US eventually settled on the only terms North Vietnam cared about, whereby its own troops remained in the South, while the Americans went home. Almost all the other provisions of the final Accords were such as neither side supposed would be observed. The only change in the communist position, the face-saver that opened the way for Washington to accede, was that Hanoi abandoned its earlier insistence on President Nguyen Van Thieu’s removal as leader of South Vietnam.

Two factors were in play here: during the summer the Northerners recognized that Nixon was assured of re-election. Not only could they not hope to negotiate with a different and more sympathetic US government, but once polling was over, the White House might play rougher. Moreover, Hanoi made the pragmatic calculation that getting rid of the Americans was the only objective that mattered: once the ‘imperialists’ quit Indochina, destruction of their Saigon clients should neither prove difficult, nor take intolerably long. This perception was shared by the government of South Vietnam.

The exchanges at the White House between Nixon and Kissinger about Vietnam are chronicled in an incontrovertible detail unprecedented in history, because tape-recorded. The two men cherished few illusions about what they were doing, though bent upon ensuring that the American people did. Kissinger professed to regard Hanoi’s shift about Thieu as a diplomatic victory, because it opened the way for a ‘decent interval’. He told Nixon on 3 August: ‘If a year or two years from now North Vietnam gobbles up South Vietnam, we can have a viable foreign policy, if it looks like it’s the result of South Vietnamese incompetence. If we now sell out in such a way that, say, within a three- to four-month period, we have pushed President Thieu over the brink’, he thought that even the Chinese would be dismayed by American clumsiness and cynicism. Everything in the later negotiations was about timing outcomes to make things look right.

Will Trump continue to pretend nothing really happened?

Horrendous screams were heard by a witness downstairs, Turkish source said. "The consul himself was taken out of the room. There was no attempt to interrogate him. They had come to kill him,” the source told MEE.

The screaming stopped when Khashoggi - who was last seen entering the Saudi consulate on 2 October - was injected with an as yet unknown substance. Tubaigy began to cut Khashoggi’s body up on a table in the study while he was still alive, the Turkish source said.

http://susiemadrak.com/2018/10/17/horrific/

Unconfirmed speculation: The Netanyahu—bin Salman—Trump plan is to have the US and the West boycott Iranian oil beginning in early November in order to collapse Iran’s economy and cause regime change.

Somebody didn’t like the plan and decided to make it known to Khashoggi, a journalist.

Before Khashoggi published the plan, we all know what happened next.

On October 2, Khashoggi was killed and then dismembered inside the Saudi Arabian Embassy.

On October 9, UN Ambassador Nikki Haley suddenly resigned without explanation.

But, where the 3-Stoogies—-Netanyahu, bin Salman and Trump—-went wrong was in believing that after Khashoggi’s Mafia-style hit (greenlighted by Kushner) occurred nobody would take notice or even care.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke was the subject of 14 separate government investigations. (A new record!) But that number could soon be zero. That’s because Zinke just fired the Department of the Interior’s acting inspector general.

The news doesn’t stop there. Not only did Mary Kendall, the acting inspector general, not learn she was being replaced until The Hill broke the news this morning, but her replacement will likely be able to fill the role without needing to go through Senate confirmation.

Kendall—who’s served as acting inspector general at the DOI for ten years, and previously spent a decade as deputy inspector general—is being replaced by Suzanne Israel Tufts, a Republican lawyer who worked on the Trump campaign.

One way to get those annoying ethics pests off your back is to fire the inspector general and replace her with a party hack. That should do the job nicely.

No Republican in Congress will see anything wrong with this.

Donald Trump claims he only licensed his name for real estate projects developed by others. But an investigation of a dozen Trump deals shows deep family involvement in projects that often involved deceptive practices.

by Heather Vogell, ProPublica, with Andrea Bernstein and Meg Cramer, WNYC, and Peter Elkind, ProPublica

October 17, 2018

The Trumps were typically way more than mere licensors or bystanders in their often-troubled deals. They were deeply involved in these projects. They helped mislead investors and buyers — and they profited handsomely from it.

Patterns of deceptive practices occurred in a dozen deals across the globe, as the business expanded into international projects, and the Trumps often participated. One common pattern, visible in more than half of those transactions, was a tendency to misstate key sales numbers.

In interviews and press conferences, Ivanka Trump gave false sales figures for projects in Mexico’s Baja California; Panama City, Panama; Toronto and New York’s SoHo neighborhood. These statements weren’t just the legendary Trump hype; they misled potential buyers about the viability of the developments.

Another pattern: Donald Trump repeatedly misled buyers about the amount (or existence) of his ownership in projects in Tampa, Florida; Panama; Baja and elsewhere. For a tower planned in Tampa, for example, Trump told a local paper in 2005 that his ownership would be less than 50 percent: “But it’s a substantial stake. I recently said I’d like to increase my stake but when they’re selling that well they don’t let you do that.” In reality, Trump had no ownership stake in the project.

The Trumps often made money even when projects failed. And when they tanked, the Trumps simply ignored their prior claims of close involvement, denied any responsibility and walked away.

The cycle is exemplified in Panama City, where the Trumps were involved in a project to build a massive tower and complex known as the Trump Ocean Club. The project’s unfortunate turns included bankruptcy, then, years later, the forcible ejection of the Trump Organization from managing the hotel.

There, as elsewhere, the Trump Organization disclaimed responsibility. It emphasized that it had merely licensed the Trump name to developers who handled everything from construction to marketing. “The Trump Organization was not the owner, developer or seller of the Trump Ocean Club Panama project,” it said in a statement last year. “Because of its limited role, the company was not responsible for the financing of the project and had no involvement in the sale of units.”

That was false. For starters, Trump arranged financing — his promised commission: $2.2 million or more — by bringing in investment bank Bear Stearns, which issued the bonds that paid for the Panama project’s construction.

Mitch McConnell Admits That the GOP Doesn’t Actually Want to Fix the Deficit While It’s in Charge

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/10/mitch-mcconnell-deficit-li
es.html

Mitch McConnell says that Republicans will not take any serious steps to reduce the deficit, unless they can also share blame for unpopular entitlement cuts with Democrats.

He didn’t use exactly those words during his Tuesday interview with Bloomberg. But the Senate Majority Leader came close, admitting that changes to programs like Medicare and Social Security might be “impossible to achieve” as long as Republicans controlled both houses of Congress and the White House. It was a quietly refreshing moment, in which McConnell effectively dropped the entire charade that Republicans are a party that prioritizes fiscal prudence—making explicit what has long been obvious to anyone who has paid the faintest bit of attention to Washington over the past decades.

Yeah. No shit.

One of the reasons that GWB was the worst president we ever had, at the time, and then Obama came in and made him look miserly.

It's gotten slightly better in the last two years, but I'm fairly sure the American Dollar is doomed now after the leadership of the last two decades.

At least you've found a left voice that is discussing something legitimate again. Though I think this is just people beginning to hedge their bets if the blue wave doesn't come through and they're preparing to shift back into blame-everything-on-republicans-mode until the 2020 election. A tactic that is only going to work if the economy does get worse in the next 2 years.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

You kind of miss the completely depressing point: If Democrats win a few seats in Congress, so what? There are still like 150,000,000 Republicans out there. They are dead weight. They are the Homer Simpsons of America. If you asked them, they think of themselves as the Ned Flanders of America and it is the 175,000,000 Democrats who are weighing America down, keeping it from soaring. Whichever it is, either 150 or 175 million that aren't worth what it costs to have them around, that is a huge problem that is not going away. Personally, I think the Republicans politicians should stay in control, doing a thorough demolition of all the Republican voters's dreams and hopes. (As a side note: I will make a ton of money as the GOP wrecks things; that won't happen if the Democrats have control) Only after the destruction will some of those 150,000,000 Republicans realize they are wrong as can be and, maybe, change their ways. But I also believe in spanking children. At least for my kids, punishment actually worked. It worked on me: I had to go to Vietnam and have that war beat the hell out of me, completely knocking all false illusions out of me about my fellow Americans, to make me a slightly better person who is actually of some small use to America.

Afterthought: George McGovern, the Democrat, ran against Nixon in 1972. The Democrat was completely right about Vietnam and he lost because he was right and the majority didn't want to believe the obvious truth of what McGovern was saying. All those people, some of them "Democrats", who voted for Nixon, the Republican, were completely wrong about Vietnam. Too bad they didn't go to Vietnam and get the hell beating out of them by Nixon for their stubborn unwillingness to learn, but they would have had to volunteer or be drafted. The situation is different today. You would have to go Vietnam or Canada now to avoid Trump beating the hell of America.

We had 8 years of Vietnam war, and yet the majority of voters believed that Richard Nixon in 1972 represented their values and would bring victory to Vietnam. They had no reason to believe what they believed. They must have been crazy not to listen to McGovern, who told them as plain as day what was happening in Vietnam. I could have told them, too, after serving a few months in South East Asia, but did they listen to McGovern and vote Democrat? No. The majority learned nothing from the previous 8 years. They understood nothing. They voted for the Republicans in a landslide. They were stupid to re-elect Nixon.

I swear to God, you overthink these things. You only have a choice between D and R. There are third parties, but they always lose. And by now you know perfectly well what the GOP stands for. If you want to vote for R, go ahead. Don't overthink it. If you do want to think about the GOP then:

When the Trump tax cut was on the verge of being enacted, I called it “the biggest tax scam in history,” and made a prediction: deficits would soar, and when they did, Republicans would once again pretend to care about debt and demand cuts in Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

Sure enough, the deficit is soaring. And this week Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, after declaring the surge in red ink “very disturbing,” called for, you guessed it, cuts in “Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid.” He also suggested that Republicans might repeal the Affordable Care Act — taking away health care from tens of millions — if they do well in the midterm elections.

Any political analyst who didn’t see this coming should find a different profession. After all, “starve the beast” — cut taxes on the rich, then use the resulting deficits as an excuse to hack away at the safety net — has been G.O.P. strategy for decades.

Oh, and anyone asking why Republicans believed claims that the tax cut would pay for itself is being naïve. Whatever they may have said, they never actually believed that the tax cut would be deficit-neutral; they pushed for a tax cut because it was what wealthy donors wanted, and because their posturing as deficit hawks was always fraudulent. They didn’t really buy into economic nonsense; it would be more accurate to say that economic nonsense bought them.

Trump Threatens To Close Southern U.S. Border

"I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!.."
6:35 AM - Oct 18, 2018

I sure hope he is not faking. The closer to election day he does it, the better to show voters Trump can create chaos with a Presidential order: Stop all traffic. Close the roads to and from Mexico. Shoot-to-kill orders for anybody approaching the border, especially women and children. It will be a great news opportunity. Might even affect the election.

It won't be a big deal if Mexican authorities do their job.

First paragraph of the article:

Quote:

Mexico has ramped up security along its southern border and says that only migrants with valid paperwork will be allowed to enter Mexico — namely, a passport, which most of those in the caravan do not have.

Oops. Better go back home and get your IDs.

Sixth paragraph of the article:

Quote:

The Mexican government says that the migrants may apply for asylum in Mexico, but that they'll have to do so from a detention center. Mexico warned that if migrants are caught crossing illegally, they will be detained and deported.

Looks like Mexico has detention centers too, huh? Oh the humanity.

The Mexicans' job is NOT to protect America from Hondurans. I really hope Trump feels the need to close the Mexican border just before the election. I really want him to give the shoot-to-kill order: "Shoot the children first. Then their parents will turn back." It is family separation raised to the highest possible level with children permanently and irrevocable separated from Mommy. "Nearly four months after a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to reunite families separated at the border, 245 children remain in government custody, according to a new analysis of government data by the American Civil Liberties Union."

"All Democrats fault for weak laws!" tweeted Trump. That's why he needs to give the shoot-to-kill order along the border. Show how tough he is.

No. It's their job to keep the rif-raf out of their own country.

Here's a little experiment. Walk your happy ass to the Honduras without a passport or any ID and see how far you get.

So. Insanity and an actual desire for violence and bloodshed stated twice here is where you're going to choose to go next since nothing else has worked so far for the Democrats then?

That naturally seems the logical step up from Bill Maher hoping the economy takes a nosedive before the elections.

Trump is silly in the head. So is his son-in-law, and you just shrug it off as nothing but the Democrats' fault for pointing it out :

Jared Kushner Reportedly Still Convinced Grisly Bone-Saw Murder Will Blow Over

The media ignored Saudi atrocities in Yemen, so why not a missing journalist?

“Trust me, it’s not a big deal. A month from now, no one will even remember you were accused of murdering and dismembering a man; this is no worse than that time your army accidentally slaughtered a bunch of kids, and no one ever mentions that anymore.”

Hard-line Republicans and conservative commentators are mounting a whispering campaign against Jamal Khashoggi that is designed to protect President Trump from criticism of his handling of the dissident journalist’s alleged murder by operatives of Saudi Arabia — and support Trump’s continued aversion to a forceful response to the oil-rich desert kingdom.
Those aspersions — which many lawmakers have been wary of stating publicly because of the political risks of doing so — have begun to flare into public view as conservative media outlets have amplified the claims, which are aimed in part at protecting Trump as he works to preserve the U.S.-Saudi relationship and avoid confronting the Saudis on human rights.
The smears have escalated. Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son and key political booster, shared another person’s tweet last week with his millions of followers that included a line that Khashoggi was “tooling around Afghanistan with Osama bin Laden” in the 1980s, even though the context was a feature story on bin Laden’s activities.

The White House hates journalists, and not just Saudi journalists:

We knew Trump wouldn’t condemn a congressman for assaulting a reporter. Now, he celebrates it. Twice in two months, Trump has gone to Montana and praised that state’s congressman for assaulting a reporter. On Thursday, Trump outright celebrated the incident, which led to Rep. Greg Gianforte (R-Mont.) eventually pleading guilty to a misdemeanor. A judge called Gianforte’s behavior “totally unacceptable.”

Did you expect the following from the GOP and Trump? For their willingness to promote propaganda, Trump and Gaetz earn Four Pinocchios. (The bigger lie, the bigger the nose)

“BREAKING: Footage in Honduras giving cash 2 women & children 2 join the caravan & storm the US border @ election time. Soros? US-backed NGOs? Time to investigate the source!”

— Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), in a tweet, Oct. 17, 2018

“Can you believe this, and what Democrats are allowing to be done to our country?”

— President Trump, in a tweet, Oct. 18, 2018

“Now we’re starting to find out, and I won’t say it 100 percent, I’ll put a little tiny question mark at the end … a lot of money’s been passing through people to come up and try and get to the border by Election Day, because they think that’s a negative for us. … They [Democrats] wanted that caravan, and there are those that say that caravan didn’t just happen, it didn’t just happen.”

— Trump, in a rally in Montana, Oct. 18, 2018

What’s happening in this grainy and abbreviated footage from Central America? Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) tweeted a video he said was from Honduras of women and children receiving cash to “join the caravan” and “storm” the U.S.-Mexico border.

A caravan of Honduran migrants crossed the border into Guatemala on Oct. 15. The next day, President Trump threatened Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández on Twitter, saying that if the group didn’t turn around, there would be “no more money or aid.”

Gaetz’s tweet and the video in question appeared just a day after that. Without offering evidence, Gaetz said liberal billionaire George Soros or nongovernmental organizations were paying the migrants.

The day after the Gaetz tweet, Trump tweeted the same video. And hours later, at his Montana rally Oct. 18, Trump floated his own conspiracy theory: that this was all a big ruse financed by his political opponents. The caravan “didn’t just happen,” and “a lot of money has been passing through to people to come up and try to get to the border by Election Day because [Democrats] think that’s a negative for us,” Trump told the crowd.

According to Trump, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen is not being tough enough on migrants heading to the southern border, not deterring them fiercely enough.

Think about that for a moment. Nielsen, whose DHS stole migrant children from their parents, put the children in pens, made babies defend themselves in immigration court, made immigration policy the subject of investigations by global human rights organizations, was being derided by the President and Bolton for being too soft on immigration.

Family separation? Deporting soldiers who served their country? Deploying National Guard? Defying court orders? None of these were tough enough for Donald Trump and Bolton, who apparently were arguing that we need even more odious and un-American border policies than the ones that regularly have cartoonists depicting the Statue of Liberty weeping into her hands.

Trump clearly sees political benefit to more border-related fear-mongering, as his frantic tweets about a "caravan" of Hondurans heading our way suggest. How does Homeland Security act even tougher? Is threatening to kill the children enough deterrent to stop the parents before they get to the Texas/Mexico border? Will that be enough toughness for Trump?

Trump is saying ‘It doesn’t matter.’ and ‘We’ll see.’ more and more frequently. The Trump Doctrine is sounding more fatalistic every day.

It is not about what you want or anybody you know wants. It is about what Homeland Security wants.

Homeland Security is Trump's radio controlled toy car. It will go in whatever direction he wants in order to get more votes in November, which means it all comes down to what Trump thinks is best for himself and the GOP.

As far as I can tell, the only thing Trump hasn't done yet is announce that he has ordered Homeland Security to kill the children, because all the lesser steps have already been ordered.

Trump has said they must be stopped before they get to the border. Announcing he will kill them on sight ought to do the trick. If it does not, he can go the next step and actually pull the trigger and kill them. I'm pretty sure he won't actually go that far because that is a guaranteed vote loser.

Trump profoundly believes nothing matters because he usually isn’t the victim of his own mistakes.

“In the end it will work out,” Trump said in May. “I can’t tell you exactly how or why, but it always does.”

In 1989, when Trump was 43, three of his young employees died in a helicopter crash on the way to Atlantic City. A tragedy “can have two effects,” Trump told Larry King. “You can cherish life more because of it, or it can have the tendency to cheapen it. And unfortunately, it cheapened a little bit for me, because these were three incredible people to die like this.”

For a man so rich, life got cheaper. For a man who likes to define life on his terms — he’s an existentialist, in practice — he talks like a fatalist, resigned to the chaotic but predetermined mechanics of the universe.

“Life is what you do while you’re waiting to die,” Trump told Playboy in 1990. “ . . . We’re here and we live our 60, 70 or 80 years and we’re gone. You win, you win, and in the end, it doesn’t mean a hell of a lot.”

“I’m very much a fatalist,” he told the New York Times in 2016, when asked about the hereditary specter of Alzheimer’s disease, which afflicted his father.

“I’m a great fatalist,” Trump told Newsday in 1991, as his business empire was teetering. “Whatever happens, happens, and you just have to go along with it.” What will Trump do if the refugees approach the Texas border? Will he kill them? I and Trump don't know.

President Trump broke with his own intelligence agencies on Friday, appearing to accept Saudi Arabia’s explanation that the journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed by accident during a fistfight, while the United States’ spy agencies are increasingly convinced that he was assassinated on high-level orders from the Saudi royal court.

Mr. Trump, who has cultivated Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and made Saudi Arabia the linchpin of his Middle East strategy, has been deeply reluctant to point a finger at the prince, despite evidence linking him to Saudi operatives who entered the country’s consulate in Istanbul the same day that Mr. Khashoggi disappeared there.

More at www.nytimes.com/2018/10/19/us/politics/trump-saudi-arabia-journalist-k
hashoggi.html

After lying for more than two weeks about the death of Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi government has now announced a series of new lies about his murder in ways that insult both Jamal’s memory and our intelligence.

The Saudi government on Friday issued a statement claiming that Jamal was killed when a fistfight went bad in its consulate in Istanbul. Really? This is a fistfight to which the Saudi goons reportedly brought a bone saw so that they could dismember him afterward; by some accounts, they began the dismemberment while he was still alive.

It’s also grotesque for the Saudi authorities to claim that a journalist whose fingers they reportedly amputated as part of their torture somehow managed to engage in a fistfight. Jamal had no fists left.

I had known Jamal for more than 15 years, and I’m appalled by every element of what happened: By what appears to have been his brutal torture-murder, by the cover-up afterward, by President Trump's downplaying of Jamal's killing, and now by the effort by the Saudi government to set up scapegoats to take the fall.

These lies are so blatant and implausible that they suggest Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman believes he will have the backing of the United States in this cover-up. That’s a good bet, since Trump has lately celebrated the assault on a journalist by a Montana congressman and previously suggested that maybe a rogue killer was responsible for killing Jamal.

The Crown Prince has already gotten away with kidnapping Lebanon’s prime minister and starving eight million Yemenis; if he also gets away with murdering Jamal, who was an American resident and Washington Post columnist, as many believe happened, then that’s a green light to him and any other autocrat who wants to make a troublesome journalist disappear. Journalists and democracy activists all over the world will have targets on their backs.

So what we really have now is a test of Trump and of America itself. Will Trump go along with the cover-up, or will he attempt to uphold America’s honor and dignity in this instance?

The Hell of Good Intentions - Stephen Walt (Harvard University, Foreign Policy)
America’s Foreign Policy Elite And The Decline Of U.S. Primacy

The bit torrent link to the book is df4aab819243e1daab1752bf4e77769574ad80bf

This book seeks to explain why the United States spent the past quarter century pursuing an ambitious, unrealistic, and mostly unsuccessful foreign policy. Having won the Cold War and achieved a position of primacy unseen since the Roman Empire, why did U.S. leaders decide to maintain a military establishment that dwarfed all others and expand an already far-flung network of allies, client states, military bases, and security commitments? Instead of greeting the defeat of its principal rival as an opportunity to reduce America’s global burdens, why did both Democrats and Republicans embark on an ill-considered campaign to spread democracy, markets, and other liberal values around the world?

This strategy—sometimes termed “liberal hegemony”—has been a costly failure. Yet three successive administrations—under Clinton, Bush, and Obama—clung to it, even as the costs mounted and the quagmires multiplied. Why did Washington persist in the face of repeated setbacks, and how did the foreign policy establishment convince the American people to support policies that were neither necessary nor successful?

Instead of pursuing a more restrained grand strategy, U.S. leaders opted for liberal hegemony because the foreign policy community believes spreading liberal values is both essential for U.S. security and easy to do. They convinced ordinary citizens to support this ambitious agenda by exaggerating international dangers, overstating the benefits that liberal hegemony would produce, and concealing the true costs. And because members of the foreign policy elite are rarely held to account, they were able to make the same mistakes again and again.

Trump may have been largely correct when he called U.S. foreign policy “a complete and total disaster,” but he failed to develop a coherent alternative to liberal hegemony, and his errors in judgment, poor personnel choices, and ill-advised decisions only made things worse.

You didn't download the book, did you? If you had, you'd see that your new terminology "Feminist Hegemony" does not shine new light on an old subject -- women. Getting back to foreign policy, there is Chapter 2 of the book:

2. Why Liberal Hegemony Failed

The previous chapter described how the optimistic hopes with which the post–Cold War era began had come crashing to earth by 2016. Longtime adversaries were stronger and more assertive; traditional U.S. allies were weaker and more divided; and America’s ambitious attempt to shape regional politics, spread liberal values, promote peace, and strengthen global institutions had mostly come to naught despite repeated and often costly efforts.

The taproot of these failures was the U.S. commitment to a grand strategy of “liberal hegemony”: an ambitious effort to use American power to reshape the world according to U.S. preferences and political values. Despite important differences in style and emphasis, the Clinton, Bush, and Obama administrations were all deeply committed to this basic approach.

Yet liberal hegemony proved an elusive goal. At its most basic level, the strategy failed because it rested on mistaken views of how international politics actually works. It exaggerated America’s ability to reshape other societies and underestimated the ability of weaker actors to thwart U.S. aims. The United States had enormous power and in some cases good intentions, but these virtues could not overcome the strategy’s inherent flaws.

Trump Is Having a Meltdown Over the Migrant Caravan

Donald Trump, who’s been stumping for congressional Republicans, is now calling the November midterms the “election of the caravan,” and says that the Democrats support the “illegal immigration onslaught” because they “figure everybody coming in is going to vote Democrat.”

In the last several months, over the objections of regional experts and diplomatic staff, officials at the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security have wound down a number of programs meant to provide legal relief to those seeking refuge in the U.S. This summer, Attorney General Jeff Sessions unilaterally redrew decades of jurisprudence on asylum law to make it significantly more difficult for migrants fleeing gang violence and domestic abuse to seek asylum.

None of Trump’s strategies have helped stem the flow. According to unpublished government data obtained by the Washington Post, Border Patrol has apprehended more than a hundred thousand migrants in the last year, which is about thirty thousand more arrests than the previous peak, in 2016. The rationale for the President’s harshest measures, from the indefinite detention of asylum seekers to the separation of families at the border, was that they would deter other migrants from making the trip. The government’s own data contradicts that, and so Trump’s enforcement policy is stuck in a feedback loop: he’s been defending actions that haven’t changed migration patterns, while simultaneously citing a “border crisis” as the reason to double down.

For months, the President has blamed Kirstjen Nielsen, the Secretary of Homeland Security, for the increase in immigration, even though she’s been a reliable enforcer of Trump’s agenda.

More at www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/why-the-trump-white-house-is-having-a
-meltdown-over-the-migrant-caravan

More than 5,100 migrants have been registered in three shelters in the Mexican border town of Ciudad Hidalgo, while another 2,000 had camped out for the night in the town’s central square, said Gerardo Hernandez, head of the local government’s emergency services.

“It’s really full. You can’t even walk, there’s just so many people,” he said referring to the plaza. “So far, they’re all peaceful, thank God.”

I await Trump’s next move. Maybe threaten Mexico if it does not stop the caravan? Maybe drone strikes on the caravan? Maybe blame the Democrats? Oops! He already did that. Maybe he will repeat himself?

Feminism defends equal political, economic, cultural, and social rights for women in the United States. Why does that bother Republicans and so-called "Independents", guys who can't lose rights that they never had in the first place, except in their imaginations? It might bother somebody like me, who actually has these rights because I took them forcefully by kicking asses out of the way and stomping on fools, but why would it bother weaklings who never did have rights? Oh, I just answered my own question; feminism reminds guys who have always been weak-willed that they are not doing so well as weaklings kicked around by bigger, meaner men. And now by bigger, meaner women. That is why those anti-femi-nazis guys (and gals) are angry.

Islam? Why did you jam scary Feminism and Islam into the same sentence? Oh, I know: 2018 could be the most Islamophobic U.S. Election ever. “Anti-Muslim rhetoric has been in use for years, but until recently, it remained mostly on the fringes of the mainstream,” said Scott Simpson. That’s changed since Trump, Simpson said: “In this midterm cycle, we’re seeing a lot of new adopters. They’ve seen Trump blast this ideology on the campaign trail, more blatant than any campaign like it — and he won! Now it seems many of them want to try out Islamophobia as a political strategy themselves. And we’re seeing this in every demographic and region.”

No. You don't know.

The largest examples of women being oppressed by men in this world today are in predominantly Muslim countries.

Women have everything here already. Name me one single right that men have that women don't in America.

Furthermore, more women now go to college then men. Women have 100% control over procreation. Women tend to hold all of the cards in a divorce, including custody of kids unless it can be very easily proven that they are psychologically unhinged.

Feminism already won. Equality is had.

Since the Feminist Hegemony has run out of shit to do in America, I suggest they start doing missionary work to places that still have thousands of honor killings of women every year and places where women only were finally granted the right to drive a car in the last few years. Yanno... if they're really that bored.

"Unbelievably, women still don't have equal rights in the Constitution"

"Women finally got the vote in 1920, when the 19th Amendment was ratified — more than a century after the Constitution was written.
A few years later, in 1923, the Equal Rights Amendment was introduced in Congress to give women all the other rights in the Constitution. The amendment makes discrimination against women unconstitutional and prohibits legal distinction between the sexes when it comes to property, employment and a whole host of other things.
But almost a century later, the ERA is still unfinished business. That's right: Women still don't have constitutional equality.
Congress didn't get around to passing the ERA until the 1970s, and even then, it fell short of the 38 states needed for ratification by the time the deadline expired in 1982. It has been introduced in every session of Congress since but has never made it to the floor for a vote."

John Quincy Adams may have recognized that the early republic was too weak to “go out in search for monsters to destroy,” but the temptation to spread liberal ideals became more alluring as the United States grew stronger. Once the country stood at the pinnacle of power, it was impossible to resist. If feminists in America, because they are feeling stronger, decide to "improve" religions they don't belong to, they will fail in the same way as the U.S. Departments of Defense and State have failed to "improve" Muslim countries.

Can American Men and Women Ever Really Be Equal?
http://time.com/longform/gender-equality-america/
In 1970, noted communist Richard Nixon started talking up affordable child care. A year later, Congress passed by a wide, bipartisan margin a child-care bill. When it got to Nixon’s desk, though, adviser Pat Buchanan persuaded him to block it to protect his right flank. In his veto, Nixon said he could not “commit the vast moral authority of the National Government to the side of communal approaches to child rearing over against the family-centered approach.” It turned out to be a rehearsal dinner for the marriage of antigovernment and self-described “pro-family” activists, who would spend the ’80s rejecting an Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution, telling women that feminism was to blame for all ills and stacking the courts with abortion opponents.

In the U.S., Ruth Bader Ginsburg had been demoted for becoming pregnant and expected to quit at childbirth. By the early ’70s, Ginsburg had begun her effort to convince the Supreme Court that gender discrimination was unconstitutional.

Women are held up on a pedestal in America. You are being ridiculous.

Outside of the mega-rich people here, women have equality and some.

Please stop pointing to high profile individuals for your argument. You end up missing how Feminism already won with the 99% and now only serves to subjugate males in the 99%.

The only way to making the argument that childcare is a "womans issue" is by recognizing that WOMEN are affected by pregnancy and early childcare whereas men are not. (Unless you can show me that men can get pregnant, in which case I cede the argument.)

That is the one area where women are INEVITABLY unequal. So the question isn't whether men and women are equal in this aspect, but how we want to deal with the inequality. And that becomes the issue of whether or not THIS society values children and child-raising, or relegates it to underpaid workers who can't find a "better" profession.

Maybe the answer is to elevate "women's work" as mothers (and also "father's work" as fathers), and not constantly denigrate it.

So this needs discussion, not fighting over.

Agreed. Men and Women ARE different, biologically speaking, though it pains the Ultralibs to admit it.

My step-mom was awesome. She raised my step-bro and half-bro and they're both insanely successful now compared to my brothers and I from the divorced marriage. Yet, at the same time, she suffered a lot of bullshit about making that choice and not working from a lot of people and was always defensive about her choice. I always made a point of letting her know how much I respected her for her decision and I think when her kids ended up being so successful it was a bit of vindication on her part.

Fast forward to now with the kids out of the house, she makes more money than I do by quite a bit. Doing what? Babysitting, cleaning houses, house sitting and caring for an elderly couple.

EDITED TO ADD: Yanno who denegrated her the most for her choice? My mom, who turned to being a career woman after the divorce. She absolutely hated her job and most of the people she worked for. We couldn't even sit through a family dinner without having to hear her bitch from start to finish. She was a great project manager and reveled in the fact that her subordinates called her "Bitch on Wheels", but was always pissed that she couldn't get any higher in the company. Why would anybody give her a promotion at that point? She kept the peons in line, worked 40 hours overtime a week from home for free and she was absolutely miserable to be around.

She always had bad things to say about my step-mom. Whether it was calling her lazy or saying things like "It must be nice not to have to work all day".

Hey Jealousy.

Man I'm glad my mom and step dad retired very early and started their own business. She's an entirely different person once taken out of that cutthroat environment and she's like the woman I knew as a child before everything changed.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

The Nurture Assumption: Why Children Turn Out the Way They Do

The bit torrent hash to this book for 6ix: 34a8254e9d1db27f7e0198e438e859465b260ab6
http://kat.rip/torrent/34a8254e9d1db27f7e0198e438e859465b260ab6.html

The book begins: Parental nurturing is not what determines how a child turns out. Children are not socialized by their parents. People might have accepted with a yawn the idea that parents’ influence on their children had been somewhat overestimated, but what I was proposing was far more heretical: that parents have no lasting influence on their children’s personalities or on the way they behave outside the home. The proposition doesn’t mean that parents are unimportant—they have other roles to play in their children’s lives. But the subtleties were lost when the media compressed my argument into three little words: “Do Parents Matter?” The book ends with "As for what’s wrong with you: don’t blame it on your parents." That's the sardonic humor the reviewers refer to.

Since you'll probably never find time to read the book, I'll summarize the last half of the last chapter:

The other point about the way the mind works (as Pinker and his fellow evolutionary psychologists have explained) is that it’s modular. The mind is composed of a number of specialized departments, each collecting its own data and issuing its own reports or orders. Just as the body is organized into physical organs that each do one specific job—the lungs oxygenate the blood, the heart pumps it around the body—so the mind is organized into mental organs or modules or departments. One department lets you see the world in three dimensions, another enables you to pick up the glass. Some of the mind’s departments issue reports that are accessible to consciousness; others do not.

The mental department that keeps track of relationships is accessible to the conscious mind. The department that adapts your behavior to that of your group is no less important but it is less accessible to consciousness. A lot of its work goes on at an automatic level, like the muscle movements that enable you to pick up the glass.

Much of the information we collect about the world is collected unconsciously. We don’t know how we know many of the things we know; we just know them. Children learn that red fruits are sweeter than green ones and if you give them a choice they’ll pick the red one, but they can’t tell you why. The gathering of data, the construction of categories, and the averaging of data within categories was all carried out below the level of consciousness.

The processes that I have been talking about in this book generally go on below the level of consciousness. We identify with a group of people. We learn to speak and behave like these people; we take on their attitudes. We adapt our speech and behavior to different social contexts. We develop stereotypes of our own group and of other groups. These things can be brought into consciousness but that’s not where they live. In this book I have been talking about things that children do without noticing them, without having to exert conscious effort. It leaves the tops of their minds free to do other things.

Groups and relationships: they are both important to us but in different ways. Our childhood experiences with peers and our experiences at home with our parents are important to us in different ways.

The bond between parent and child lasts a lifetime. We kiss our parents goodbye not once but many times; we do not lose track of them. Each visit home gives us opportunities to take out family memories and look at them again. Meanwhile, our childhood friends have scattered to the winds and we’ve forgotten what happened on the playground.

When you think about childhood you think about your parents. Blame it on the relationship department of your mind, which has usurped more than its rightful share of your thoughts and memories.

As for what’s wrong with you: don’t blame it on your parents. (Blame your friends on the playground. Because your friends far outnumbered your parents, they shaped you more than your parents. The End.)

The same Republicans who railed about unbalanced budgets during the Obama administration kept their mouths shut when the latest report revealed the federal deficit has swelled to $779 billion under President Trump, 17 percent higher than the $666 billion deficit in fiscal 2017. The deficit was $585 billion in 2016. The Republicans who blasted Obama haven’t gotten excited about Trump’s unbalanced budgets except for when they use it as an excuse to call for cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

That is such hogwash, SECOND. I can point to a LOT of examples of how parents CLEARLY influence their children, even into adulthood.

You can see this best with second-generation immigrants i.e. the children of people who immigrated to this country. These children are often brought up with strong influences of their parents' cultures. You will often hear them say that they don't feel a part of EITHER culture.

If parents have so little influence on their children, this would never happen.

The only part where Second gets it right here is that my parents were largely absent from my life. They both had to work full time, and my mom especially worked around 80 hours a week. We were always carted around from place to place and basically had 3 different addresses, including my mom's parents. Later, by the time I was eleven, I wore a chain around my neck with the house key and babysat my brothers after school every day, who were 9 and 7 years old. (The 7 year old was the one who had the brain hemorrhage).

Compared to my brothers who had a mom who was home with them all day, I hardly had any interaction with my parents during my formative years, and the little interaction that I did was often miserable.

There was very little support at home, and I was bullied at school since I was one of the smallest kids, and I wore glasses and braces. It was on me to become strong enough to start beating people up until word got out that I wasn't the one to mess with. (Which made things even worse at home because I'd get my ass reamed by my mom for getting into fights). By that time though, the psychological damage had been done and I have pretty much been a loner ever since. It took copious amounts of alcohol to "enjoy" the company of most others.

I found it particularly funny when I asked a girl I went to high school that I saw in my 20's what it was like to be popular and she said "what do you mean? You were popular." I suppose by the last few years of high school I actually was, but I never felt that way at the time or enjoyed any of it.

But, hey! Yanno. White Privilege and everything.

Because of my sexual organs and the color of my skin, my life has just been one case of awesome after another.

I "love" your and Signym's "logic" and "knowledge". I also "love" how Trump, this morning, wrote that CNN deserved to be bombed and that it is not Trump's fault that people are mad; it is CNN's fault.
