At issue between these two nations is Nagorno-Karabakh. Like many borders drawn after the fall of the Soviet Union, the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan was drawn without reference to the majority residents' ethnicity and identity. The people of Nagorno-Karabakh speak Armenian and are Orthodox Christians. The people of Azerbaijan are Muslims and speak a Turkic language (Azeri). Unfortunately, Nagorno-Karabakh, instead of being included with Armenia, was shoved into Azerbaijan, and there have been problems with that ever since.

Azerbaijan has been accused of ethnic cleansing and even starving Nagorno-Karabakh. Residents of Nagorno-Karabakh have been accused of terrorism.

The current leader of Armenia, Pashynyan, seems so intent on joining the EU/NATO bloc that he just wants to scrape Nagorno-Karabakh off, so he will allow Azerbaijan to fully take over that region without ensuring that the residents there will be treated fairly and equally. This makes him extremely unpopular with Armenians.

This video made a few days ago was very predictive of the military action that is occurring. It's an excellent background explanation.

The people of Nagorno-Karabakh seems to be ethnically cleansing themselves by leaving in droves.

The USA is some alt reality dream might like to switch Armenia for other allies, but it is too close to Russia and Turks are acting weird and unfriendly, landlocked by Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north and Azerbaijan to the east, and Iran and the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan to the south, in a different timeline different reality they might be able to Georgia a country to the West which at least would connect to ports of the Black Sea to the west, but Russian invaded and blasted the crap out of Georgia's military and Turkey has grown stronger diplomatically even though Turk leadership has become more stupid and crazy

In the 80s and 1990s Armenia had 30,000—40,000 fighting men for the secessionist movement in Nagorno-Karabakh, today that number is much smaller

Russia probably does have one Ace it can play, it can stop providing Metals, Oil, Gas, Indian Rupee, Brazilian Real, Mineral banks in the region are probably rich due to sanctions so they can stop the flow until it has some sort of cease fire that it desires

Normally a group like the UN might step in and solve such a complex issue but it has become the United.Nothing.

She called on Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev to live up to his promise to protect ethnic Armenian rights, fully reopen the Lachin corridor that connects the region to Armenia and let in aid deliveries and an international monitoring mission.
