I could have sworn I saw a Favorite Songs (2) thread by JSF. He was right: the old thread was loading too slow. I went all the way back to page 8 using *find in page "song"* but that word didn't pop up except the old thread. Tried searching thru "all posts" by JSF but couldn't find it there either. Also tried a site:fireflyfans.net search for "songs" and "favorite" but the only relevant thread that popped up was the old one.

I tried, I really did. I hate starting new threads just bc I can't find the one I need, but ... I can't find the one I need. So here it is: Favorite Songs (3)

I always liked this song bc pf its hymn quality and sadness. But I feel closer to it now bc I experienced something like it myself. The part that really resonates is about hearing the voices of those "vanished and gone". After my dx and chemo, I started dreaming about my colleagues who had passed away. Sometimes as sick, sometimes as they used to be. It was sad.

I missed this one when it was new... 12 years ago. Been jamming on it when it comes on the radio this summer. I thought it was Deathcab for Cutie, but it's Postal Service. I remember they had a big hit, but this wasn't it.

It's a cool sounding song. I like unique songs like this.

ETA: Now I know why I thought it was Deatcab...

Quote:

The Postal Service is an American electronic musical group composed of vocalist Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie) and producer Jimmy Tamborello (of Dntel andHeadset) with Jenny Lewis (of Rilo Kiley) on background vocals/keyboards & samplers live. For the band's reunion tour in 2013, Laura Burhenn joined the lineup to provide additional vocals and instruments.

Is that what a chip fab really looks like? And how did they get some of that footage?

Altho you can only see part of their faces, the actors really convey emotion.

Wow, he's got a nice looking face!

I figured it had to be because it seemed like WAY too expensive a set to be created for a music video for an indie band.

According to wikipeda at least, it was filmed on location in a real fabrication plant run by Skyworks Solutions (and I did see Siemens chips in the video with the part numbers on the labels of the chips).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Such_Great_Heights

I don't think that is how the chips in our computers and smart phones are made. I'd think that would be for satelites, rockets and military equipment. Most of our stuff is done without people in the mix and they just put them through some random tests and throw out the bad ones as part of the automation process.

I was wrong about how old it was too... it was posted to YouTube in 2012. The song was from 2003, so however they do it today probably looks way different than it did 20 years ago.

I'm sure the slow motion really helps too.

I was not trying to be evasive or cryptic.

I was posting from my mobile device, so with new Android programming, that means blind.

I posted the Thread ID number of a candidate you may have been referring to.
That thread has a date of OP more than 10 years ago. Wasn't sure if that was the one you were thinking about. It also referenced an even older thread. Back when downloads speeds were even slower than today.

Wow. I guess I'm a Machine Gun Kelly fan. Until I found out he did this song I thought the dude dating Megan Fox was a rapper with that name.

I don't hear a lot of good new rock songs with real guitars these days. And I think that rockin' drum beat around 2:30 seals the deal for me. This probably would have been my favorite song in the world if I was 15 years old in 2020.

This is another really good one I've been hearing on the radio.

Powerful.

"How am I going to be an optimist about this?"

What a great question that I've never heard asked before this song.

It's kind of how I've been considering problems with my car or my house as being presented with a new learning experience rather than stewing in my own pity pot.

No more time for feeling sorry for myself in the back half of my life. And no point in wasting any time thinking about how much time I wasted doing that before.

Not to sound too haughty, but the new me is turning out to be pretty fuckin' awesome.

I've listened to Pompeii 3 times since I made that post and I'm loving it more every time.

The comment section is pretty funny because it seems like the meaning is lost on most people. It's not a song about Mount Vesuvius erupting. It's about your own Mount Vesuvius that you most likely spent a whole lifetime feeding for yourself and it took the eruption to finally make you wake up and take a long overdue and imperatively good look in the mirror and stop blaming everybody else for your current circumstances and put all that blame squarely on the asshole looking back at you.

"Oh where do we begin? The Rubble or our Sins?"

Well... Pick one. You just got to begin.

What a fantastic jam.

I don't know how I missed a lot of these songs and things that were nine to twelve years old are brand new to me. Here's another one from 2013 that I've been hearing on the radio that I love jamming to whenever it's on.

My favorite comment in the YT comment section is "I wish somebody would sing to me like this guy sings to his plant".

I'm pretty grateful to 93XRT for playing a great selection of around 6 decades of bangers and introducing me to so many great songs that I just missed. They still play some songs too often, but they're way better than any other station on the airwaves by me right now.

I know I've been memeing this song here and other places since I saw it on a Mastadon troll video a few days ago, but damn I can't stop listening to it. Total jam.

It's got just a little hint in the guitars of one of my other favorite songs in it. Baby Blue by Badfinger, which was played in the final moments of the Breaking Bad finale.

Badfinger made me thing of another one, but boy did I have to do some digging to get that one out of my craw...

First I had to listen to Charlie Day sing the Spider Song on It's Always Sunny, because I vaguely remembered that the keyboard riff he was playing was similar to the song I wanted. I had to listen to him play it a few times before the keyboard riff to the song I was looking for set in my head, but I couldn't think of a single lyric to the song and I could only imagine what the voice singing them sounded like.

Then when I was drawing a blank on lyrics, the song title or the band name, I had to do a search on keyboard jams from the 60s and 70s and came up with a top 100 list that finally got me where I was trying to get to when the band name "Procol Harum" and song name "Whiter Shade of Pale" popped out at me.

First time I'm reading the lyrics on this one. I don't even know what the song is about but I always loved how it sounded.

Now if you want a good laugh to see what the Spider Song by Charlie Day on It's Always Sunny in Philadelpia was, it's certainly not the Masterpiece that everyone in the comment section for Whiter Shade of Pale says about Procol Harum's song was.

But if you listen to the keyboard as he plays it, I think you should be able to see what influenced him.

I think I posted both of these songs together in a post back in my drinking days somewhere in these threads. This all seems very familiar to me in the most vaguest way possible right now.

This one is a jam.

Not much to the lyrics, but I get a huge 80's nostalgia itch scratched when I hear it.

Personally, I think this song did that better than Stranger Things ever could and it only took The Weeknd 3:30 minutes to do it.

Man.......

Don't ever go without a good set of headphones. I won't ever do it again.

These sound amazing. Hearing stuff I never knew were in these songs.

(Found an alternate one for Brenda because boy the official video for Ordinary World had ALL the flashing lights).

(I've NEVER heard the woman singing harmony in the background at certain parts of this song until using these headphones)

(SECRET: It was either in the movie MEG3AN or in the promos for it, but the scene at the end when MEG3AN was playing the piano after everyone knew she was double-plus-ungood, she was playing Toy Soldier, which made me giggle).

Almost tempted to get me some Beats by Dre after this...

Damn.

Never been a James Blunt fan... That once inescapable "You're Beautiful" song is probably on my top 10 list of most-hated songs I've ever heard right up there with Paul McCartney's Christmas song.

But I heard this one on my old man's collection on the drive out to see my brother and his family on the east coast a few weeks ago. I don't ever remember hearing it before, and just hearing it once was enough for me to seek it out. It was an easier task then finding most songs because it's so undeniably James Blunt's voice.

Sorry for the Spanish subtitles. I couldn't find an English version of the subtitles on the acoustic version. I don't like the "radio" version at all, but I love this version of the song.

LYRICS:
Trouble is her only friend and he's back again
Makes her body older than it really is
And she says it's high time she went away
No ones got much to say in this time
Trouble is the only way is down, down, down

As strong as you were
Tender you go
I'm watching you breathing
For the last time
A song for your heart
But when it is quiet
I know what it means
And I'll carry you home
I'll carry you home

If she had wings she would fly away
And another day God will give her some
Trouble is the only way is down, down, down

As strong as you were
Tender you go
I'm watching you breathing for the last time
A song for your heart
But when it is quiet
I know what it means
And I'll carry you home
I'll carry you home

And they were all born pretty
In New York City tonight
And summers little girl was taken from the world tonight
Under the stars and stripes

As strong as you were
Tender you go
I'm watching you breathing for the last time
A song for your heart
But when it is quiet
I know what it means
And I'll carry you home

As strong as you were
Tender you go
I'm watching you breathing for the last time
A song for your heart
But when it is quiet
I know what it means
And I'll carry you home
I'll carry you home

Here's one you've probably forgot was a thing. I know I did until my old man asked me if I'd ever heard it before a few years ago. I remember it was on the radio quite a bit for a while back in the 90s and it was strange how much of a nostalgia rush it was to hear it like 25 years later after never hearing about it again and forgetting all about it.

I don't even know what it's about really, even with the lyrics on screen. But what a jam. What a voice. I wonder if Tasmin Archer ever did anything else?

"the guy"????

That's rock and roll legend Chris Cornell! Lead of Soundgarden and Audioslave, co-lead of Temple of the Dog with Eddie Vedder before that, and the first American band to play in Cuba since 1979 while in Audioslave.

He died too. :(

2017 was a sad year. Lost both Chris and Tom Petty.

Chris had a phenomenal voice, especially in his youth.

Yeah. I don't watch any news. I don't even have digital antenna TV lol. I just heard that Paul Reubens died, so I'm surprised I didn't know about her passing too.

Jack, you forget that I am older than you. I have never heard of Audioslave or Sound Garden or Temple of the Dog.

You're not THAT much older than me.

Sound Garden was high school for me. Audioslave was a band he started sometime in my early 20's. Temple of the Dog was when I was in Jr. High. I just went through high school thinking that "Say Hello 2 Heaven" was Soundgarden and "Hunger Strike" was Pearl Jam, honestly. It wasn't until the wife of some guy I was working for in my mid-20s turned me on to some music and let me borrow some CDs that I found out Temple of the Dog was even a thing.

Yeah. I never saw anybody in concert more than Tom and the Hearbreakers.

The only group I know about is Pearl Jam outside of Tom Petty.

It looks like Soundgarden was already a thing in Seattle before Chris did the side gig with Eddie Vedder and Temple of the Dog. Hunger Strike was the first time Eddie recorded a song, and it was right when he was meeting the guys he was going to start Pearl Jam with.

ETA: Ah, SIX this stuff from Temple of the Dog is pretty depressing. And so that is a no from me.

Yeah... Say Hello 2 Heaven was a song Chris wrote for his friend who died.

Hunger Strike isn't depressing though. Chris said this about it:

"I was wanting to express the gratitude for my life but also disdain for people where that's not enough, where they want more. There's no way to really have a whole lot more than you need usually without taking from somebody else that can't really afford to give it to you. It's sort of about taking advantage of a person or people who really don't have anything."

and..

"Hunger Strike' is a statement that I'm staying true to what I'm doing regardless of what comes of it, but I will never change what I'm doing for the purposes of success or money."

Do you listen to the radio. I am sure her death would have been broadcast on there too.

Well, musically speaking almost 20 years does make a difference. When I was in High School it was people like Bryan Adams, Cher, Huey Lewis and the News, Elton John, Doug and the Slugs, Queen.

Into my 20s it was a little Paul McCartney and George Harrison. And still the bands I just named.

Saw Tom Petty and heard him on the radio and what music videos I saw.

Reading what the song writer said about "Hunger Strike" I can appreciate why he wrote it. Doesn't mean that I like the music any more. And he's not the first musician to write about that stuff.

Just got turned on to something I forgot even existed tonight...

Our local station Q101 is "Alternative Rock". It was HUGE back when I was in high school and was where Mancow got his start with his morning show before he got in politics and disappeared?

I think it shut down at some point, but came back a few years ago.

They used to this "Live at the Lounge" thing back in the day and I guess they still do it now. So while I was working tonight they did like 2 hours straight of Live at the Lounge sessions and they're really damn good.

I never heard of a band called Mondo Cozmo before, or their song Higher, but this was a jam. I actually don't care for the studio (CD) version of the song all that much, but this live performance was great!

Heard another really good one recently.

I was surprised to hear that it was a "new" song by Linkin Park. I swore I heard the lead singer died (by suicide) a while ago and that was right. Supposedly this song was rumored for a while though and they finally released it.

I always thought the guy had an amazing voice, but I hate that "screaming" rock that he always ruined his songs with, and they lyrics were just always depressing or whiny. But not this one...

This is kind of the song I'd always wished he'd sing.

I thought it was a song about actual war, but its about personal relationships, burning bridges and trying to un-burn them. Or probably more accurately, wishful thinking that they could ever be un-burned... Dude was going through a lot of shit.
