I've only heard Hilliary as a joke.

But I'll take your word.

What will be Hilliary's slogan? Impeach Trump!

Hillary obviously wouldn't have a chance of winning, but I don't think it's a joke. So much fake news on both sides today though. It's hard to sift through all the bullshit.

I sure hope she doesn't though. 2020 is already going to be worse than 2016 was.

Tulsi Gabbard has already been mentioned. As a Hindu, a woman, part-Samoan AND an Iraq veteran you'd think she would be high up in the DNC identity-politics race, but her "fatal flaw" is that she wants to end our endless wars. THAT, of course, is poison for the Democratic establishment, which wants all war all the time. So of course she's getting a ration of shit, being called Assad's favorite democrat and other crap like that.

Fucking Democratic sellouts. May they burn in hell.

Tulsi Gabbard is where I draw the line. She’s a right wing lunatic, she supports Assad, she’s a Trump pal, she tried to sabotage the DNC from within in 2016, and Russia Today loves her. She’s the one Democrat I will oppose in 2020. She’s not a real Democrat, she’s Steve Bannon.
5:46 PM - 11 Jan 2019

My support for every other Democratic 2020 candidate still stands. But Tulsi Gabbard? Hell no. She should have been banned from the party a long time ago. Fucking monster. She’ll use her campaign to try to destroy the Democratic Party during the primary. I won’t allow it.

The funny part is, looking through all the tweets mentioning “Tulsi Gabbard” right now, the only ones saying positive things about her are Trump supporters and alt-right. Their deranged fantasy is that she turns the Democratic Party into a right wing puppet of the Kremlin.

Hypocrisy Without Bounds: The Tragedy of ‘Liberal’ Foreign Policy

The president says he will bring the troops home from Syria and Afghanistan. Now, because of their pathological hatred of Trump, mainstream Democrats are hysterical in their opposition.

by Maj. Danny Sjursen Posted on January 08, 2019

If anyone else were president, the "liberals" would be celebrating. After all, pulling American soldiers out of a couple of failing, endless wars seems like a "win" for progressives. Heck, if Obama did it there might be a ticker-tape parade down Broadway. And there should be. The intervention in Syria is increasingly aimless, dangerous and lacks an end state. Afghanistan is an unwinnable war – America’s longest – and about to end in outright military defeat. Getting out now and salvaging so much national blood and treasure ought to be a progressive dream. There’s only one problem: Donald Trump. Specifically, that it was Trump who gave the order to begin the troop withdrawals.

Lost in the haze of their pathological hatred of President Trump

or Trump-voters, Republicans in general, or Americans ...
Quote:

the majority of mainstream liberal pundits and politicians can’t, for the life of them, see the good sense in extracting the troops from a couple Mideast quagmires. That or they can see the positives, but, in their obsessive compulsion to smear the president, choose politics over country. It’s probably a bit of both. That’s how tribally partisan American political discourse has become. And, how reflexively hawkish and interventionist today’s mainstream Democrats now are.

Whither the left-wing antiwar movement? Well, except for a few diehards out there, the movement seems to have been buried long ago with George McGovern.

Make no mistake, the Democrats have been tacking to the right on foreign policy and burgeoning their tough-guy-interventionist credentials for decades now. Terrified of being painted as soft or dovish on martial matters, just about all the "serious" baby-boomer Dems proudly co-opted the militarist line and gladly accepted campaign cash from the corporate arms dealers. Think about it, any Democrat with serious future presidential aspirations back in 2002 voted for the Iraq War – Hillary, Joe Biden, even former peace activist John Kerry! And, in spite of the party base now moving to the left, all these big name hawks – along with current Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer – are still Democratic stalwarts. Heck, some polls list Biden as the party’s 2020 presidential frontrunner.

More disturbing than the inconsistency of these political hacks is the vacuousness of the supposedly liberal media. After Trump’s announcement of troop withdrawals, just about every MSNBC host slammed the president and suddenly sounded more hawkish than the clowns over at Fox News. Take Rachel Maddow. Whatever you think of her politics, she is – undoubtedly – a brilliant woman. Furthermore, unlike most pundits, she knows a little something about foreign policy. Her 2012 book, Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power was a serious and well-researched critique of executive power and the ongoing failure of the wars on terror. Drift was well reviewed by regular readers and scholars alike.

Enter Donald Trump. Ever since the man won the 2016 election, Maddow’s nightly show has been dominated the hopeless dream of Russia-collusion and a desire for Trump’s subsequent impeachment. Admittedly, Maddow’s anti-Trump rhetoric isn’t completely unfounded – this author, after all, has spent the better part of two years criticizing most of his policies – but her zealousness has clouded her judgment, or worse. Indeed, that Maddow, and her fellow "liberals" at MSNBC have now criticized the troop withdrawals and even paraded a slew of disgraced neoconservatives – like Bill Kristol – on their shows seems final proof of their descent into opportunistic hawkishness.

One of the most disturbing aspects of this new "liberal" hawkishness is the pundits’ regular canonization of Jim Mattis and the other supposed “adults” in the room. For mainstream, Trump-loathing, liberals the only saving grace for this administration was its inclusion of a few trusted, "grown-up" generals in the cabinet. Yet it is a dangerous day, indeed, when the supposedly progressive journalists deify only the military men in the room. Besides, Mattis was no friend to the liberals. Their beloved President Obama previously canned "mad-dog" for his excessive bellicosity towards Iran. Furthermore, Mattis – so praised for both his judgment and ethics – chose an interesting issue for which to finally fall-on-his-sword and resign. U.S. support for the Saudi-led starvation of 85,000 kids in Yemen: Mattis could deal with that. But a modest disengagement from even one endless war in the Middle East: well, the former SECDEF just couldn’t countenance that. Thus, he seems a strange figure for a "progressive" network to deify.

Personally, I’d like to debate a few of the new "Cold Warriors" over at MSNBC or CNN and ask a simple series of questions: what on the ground changed in Syria or Afghanistan that has suddenly convinced you the US must stay put? And, what positivist steps should the military take in those locales, in order to achieve what purpose exactly? Oh, by the way, I’d ask my debate opponents to attempt their answers without uttering the word Trump. The safe money says they couldn’t do it – not by a long shot. Because, you see, these pundits live and die by their hatred of all things Trump and the more times they utter his name the higher go the ratings and the faster the cash piles up. It’s a business model not any sort of display of honest journalism.

Yep, this is how the media works. And GSTRING has the balls to call it a "free" press? It's a bought-and-paid-for press, GSTRING. And anything which is chained by money isn't "free".

Quote:

There’s a tragic irony here. By the looks of things, so long as Mr. Trump is president, it seems that any real movement for less interventionism in the Greater Middle East may come from a part of the political right – libertarians like Rand Paul along with the president’s die hard base, which is willing to follow him on any policy pronouncement. Paradoxically, these folks may find some common cause with the far left likes of Bernie Sanders and the Ocasio-Cortez crowd, but it seems unlikely that the mainstream left is prepared to lead a new antiwar charge. What with Schumer/Pelosi still in charge, you can forget about it. Given the once powerful left-led Vietnam-era protest movement, today’s Dems seem deficient indeed on foreign policy substance. Odds are they’ll cede this territory, once again, to the GOP.

By taking a stronger interventionist, even militarist, stand than Trump on Syria and Afghanistan, the Democrats are wading into dangerous waters. Maybe, as some say, this president shoots from the hip and has no core policy process or beliefs. Perhaps. Then again, Trump did crush fifteen Republican mainstays in 2015 and shock Hillary – and the world – in 2016. Indeed, he may know just what he’s doing. While the Beltway, congressional-military-industrial complex continues to support ever more fighting and dying around the world, for the most part the American people do not. Trump, in fact, ran on a generally anti-interventionist platform, calling the Iraq War "dumb" and not to be repeated. The president’s sometimes earthy – if coarse – commonsense resonated with a lot of voters, and Hillary’s hawkish establishment record (including her vote for that very same Iraq War) didn’t win her many new supporters.

Liberals have long believed, at least since McGovern’s 1972 trouncing by Richard Nixon, that they could out-hawk the Republican hawks and win over some conservatives. It rarely worked. In fact, Dems have been playing right into bellicose Republican hands for decades. And, if they run a baby-boomer-era hawk in 2020 – say Joe Biden – they’ll be headed for another shocking defeat. The combination of a (mostly, so far) strong economy and practical policy of returning US troops from unpopular wars, could, once again, out weigh this president’s other liabilities.

Foreign policy won’t, by itself, tip a national election. But make no mistake, if the clowns at MSNBC and "liberal" hacks on Capitol Hill keep touting their newfound militarism, they’re likely to emerge from 2020 with not only smeared consciences, but four more years in the opposition.

It seems like every time I listen to the news, someone else is announcing their Presidential campaign. Warren (what a school-marm!), Booker (crook), Kamala Harris (She lost my vote when she rolled on the people of CA and accepted Obama's toothless agreement with the too-big-to-fail banks of 2008. She's a spineless party toady.)

Anyone else?

The only person who interests me is Tulsi Gabbard, who not only is anti-war(despite having served in the military) but who also quit DNC campaign committee (under the infamous Debbie Wasserman Schultz) because of the way they were treating Bernie Sanders.

My idea ticket would be Rand Paul and Tulsi Gabbard running on an independent ticket, because most of the Dem candidates so far are crooks or spineless or both.

Sounds like Libertarian William Weld has announced a run against Trump.

Last seen as VP on the 2016 Libertarian Party ticket, pulling the rug out from under Johnson.

Currently GOP has lifelong Democrat Trump leading, and now Fickle Libertarians are running. Does the GOP no longer support Republicans?

Apparently "Creepy" Joe Biden is thinking of announcing. But he seems to lack the energy to rally an audience, so he may suffer one of the same problems as Hillary.

SIGNYM

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Democrat Bernie Sanders (Declared)
U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont has a strong following, particularly among younger, more liberal members of the Democratic Party. He gave Hillary Clinton a run for her money during the intraparty battle for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination by drawing large crowds with his passionate speeches about income inequality in the corrupting influence of money in the American political system.

Democrat Elizabeth Warren (Declared)
Elizabeth Warren is a U.S. senator from Massachusetts who was rumored to have been on Hillary Clinton's short list of potential running mates in the 2016 election. She has earned a reputation as a consumer advocate and advocate for the middle class because of her expertise in bankruptcy and the economic pressures facing many Americans. She, like Sanders, has taken a tough stance against Wall Street. Sen. Warren officially announced her candidacy on February 9, 2019, after a contentious week of dodging flack over her disputed claim of Native American ancestry.

Democrat Joe Biden
Joe Biden, a former U.S. senator who served two terms as vice president under Barack Obama, removed himself from speculation in the 2016 campaign following the death of his son Beau. But he re-emerged during Trump's first term in office after launching a political action committee, American Possibilities, “dedicated to electing people who believe that this country is about dreaming big, and supporting groups and causes that embody that spirit." Will one of those people be himself?
Said Biden: "I haven't decided to run, but I've decided I'm not going to decide not run. We'll see what happens."

Democrat Cory Booker (Declared)
Cory Booker, a U.S. senator from New Jersey, is a former mayor of Newark, New Jersey, who many believe began laying the groundwork for a 2020 candidacy when he testidied against a colleague in the U.S. Senate, Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, who was nominated for attorney general by Trump in 2017. Booker's speech in opposition to his colleague was likened to former President Barack Obama's soaring rhetoric.
Said Booker: “If confirmed, Senator Sessions will be required to pursue justice for women, but his record indicates that he won’t. He will be expected to defend the equal rights of gay and lesbian and transgender Americans, but his record indicates that he won’t. He will be expected to defend voting rights, but his record indicates that he won’t. He will be expected to defend the rights of immigrants and affirm their human dignity, but the record indicates that he won’t.”

Democrat Julian Castro (Declared)
Julián Castro is a Hispanic politician and rising star in the Democratic Party. He served as the mayor of San Antonio, Texas, and later earned a position in President Barack Obama's cabinet. Castro has been described as the "Latino Obama" and is often described as having the potential to become the first Latino president. Castro has launched a political action committee, “Opportunity First,” fueling speculation that he is weighing a run in 2020.

Democrat Kamala Harris (Declared)
U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, former Attorney General of California, would be the first African-American woman and the first Asian-American woman to win a major party presidential nomination. She joins Shirley Chisholm and Carol Moseley Braun as two African-American women who previously sought to run on the Democratic ticket. In announcing her candidacy, Harris noted her close relationship with party luminaries Sen. Dianne Feinstein and former Vice President Joe Biden. “I have the unique experience of having been a leader in local government, state government, and federal government,” she said regarding her credentials. “The American public wants a fighter ... and I’m prepared to do that.”

Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand (Declared)
Widely known for her #MeToo social media advocacy for survivors of sexual violence, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has announced an exploratory committee for a run for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. Announcing her candidacy on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Gillibrand stated her intention bring Democrats and Republicans together. “You have to start by restoring what’s been lost, restoring our leadership in the world,” she said. Gillibrand has state her belief that the future of the Democratic Party depends on harnessing the power of women. “I’m going to run for president of the United States because as a young mom I am going to fight for other people’s kids as hard as I would fight for my own,’’ she said.

Independent Howard Schultz
On January 27, 2019, Howard Schultz, recently retired CEO of Starbucks Coffee, announced his intention to run for president as an independent centrist candidate. A superstar in the business world, Schultz led a 1980s seven-store Seattle coffee chain to the worldwide empire it is today. “When I hear people espousing free government-paid college, free government-paid health care, and a free government job for everyone—on top of a $21 trillion debt—the question is, how are we paying for all this and not bankrupting the country?” he told the New York Times. Since his announcement, Schultz has faced an avalanche of criticism from Democrats who say his candidacy, thought doomed to failure, might help President Trump win a second term.

Democrat John Delaney (Declared)
A U.S. Representative from Maryland, John K. Delaney calls himself a “solutions-oriented moderate” who received the top score of 100 from the Human Rights Campaign for his support of equality-related legislation. “No one should be discriminated against because of who they are or who they love,” he stated of the rating. Delaney has stated that if elected, he would support an increase the corporate tax rate from 21% to 23% “to raise about $200 billion for infrastructure.”

Tulsi Gabbard (Declared)
Tulsi Gabbard, a U.S. Representative from Hawaii, strongly opposed the Trans-Pacific Partnership and led protests against it arguing that it would largely benefit multinational corporations at the expense of American workers while actively contributing to threats to the environment, such as global warming. Gabbard supports universal health care, making community college tuition-free for all Americans, and increasing the hourly federal minimum wage to $15 nationwide.

Democrat Amy Klobuchar (Declared)
First elected in 2006, Amy Klobuchar is the Senior U.S. Senator and first female Senator from Minnesota. Considered a “rising star” of the Democratic Party, her political positions have generally been along liberal lines. She supports LGBT rights and the full restoration of Obamacare, and is strongly pro-choice on abortion. Due to her staunch support of Roe v. Wade, Klobuchar opposed President Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Democrat Beto O'Rourke
Beto O'Rourke served as a U.S. Representative from Texas from 2013 to 2019. He gained nationwide notoriety and significant support among Democrats when he almost unseated heavily-favored Republican incumbent Ted Cruz in the 2018 Texas Senate race. Saying he does not know exactly where he falls on the political spectrum, O'Rourke had been variously classified as a progressive, liberal, or centrist. In Congress, has sponsored bipartisan bills as well as broken with his party on issues like trade. He has been given an 88% rating by the American Civil Liberties Union, but only a 44% rating from the more conservative United States Chamber of Commerce.

Democrat Jay Inslee (Declared)
In announcing his candidacy on March 1, 2019, Washington State’s Democratic Governor, Jay Inslee stressed what he called the “existential threat” of climate change to the safety and security of the United States. As governor, Inslee emphasized climate change, education, and drug policy reform, and gained national attention for his criticism of President Trump. In 2017, he filed a lawsuit that succeeded in temporarily blocking implementation of Trump’s terrorism-related executive order banning Syrian refugees from entering the United States.

John Hickenlooper (Declared)
Colorado’s two-term governor John Hickenlooper joined the sprawling field of Democratic hopefuls on March 4, 2019. As governor, the 66-year-old former brewpub owner and Denver mayor persuaded several Republican mayors to support a tax hike to fund a rail network around Denver, limited methane emissions from energy exploration, backed and signed gun control laws, and expanded the state’s Medicaid program. Since 2003, Hickenlooper has campaigned for increasing state services to the homeless. In 2006, he opposed a ballot initiative which decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana for recreational use in Denver.

Democrat Pete Buttigieg (Declared)
Describing himself as “a millennial Mayor, Afghanistan war veteran, and husband,” Pete Buttigieg is also the first openly gay, and at just 37, the youngest candidate to ever run for president. Serving as the 32nd mayor of South Bend, Indiana since 2012, the Washington Post has called him “the most interesting Mayor you’ve never heard of” and President Obama named him one of four Democrats who best represented the future of the Democratic Party.

Democrat Andrew Yang (Declared)
An entrepreneur known for his nonprofit Venture for America, Andrew Yang’s platform includes giving all adult U.S. citizens $1,000 month in a universal basic income he calls a “Freedom Dividend.” His campaign website states, “Every U.S. citizen over the age of 18 would receive $1,000 a month, regardless of income or employment status, free and clear.” He also proposes regulating the addictive nature of media, adding a White House Psychologist, and making Tax Day a national holiday. His campaign slogan is “Humanity First.”

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

For me, this topic has 3 points of interest
1) who do I like (who I can guarantee will never in a million years be anointed by the DNC)
2) how do I think the machinations will roll and who will be anointed
3) what is the DNC going to do, and how can it fail (In the last presidential election, though I wrongly assumed Hillary would win, I was correct in pointing out that Hillary was an abysmal candidate, and the DNC had a losing platform and incoherent message.)

BTW, my 2016 'never-Hillary' vote was based on only 1 thing - who is least likely to get us blown up in a radioactive firestorm. My next vote will be based on that as well, along with paying attention to who will do more than phony lip-service to combat global warming. The last presidential election I was a single issue voter. The next round I'll be a 2-issue voter.

Media Hit-Job Continues As Colbert Ambushes Tulsi Gabbard

The reason I call Colbert a propagandist and not simply a liberal empire loyalist who happens to have been elevated by billionaire media is because these are carefully constructed narratives that he is reciting, and they weren’t constructed by him.
Yep. We get to see how free our political opinions can really be. Also, the fact that neoliberals are aligning against her is a big plus for her in my book.

I would like to post on a somewhat related topic in this thread, so let me intro my idea here. During the last presidential election cycle I posted quite often what a toxic candidate Hillary was, what a mockery of democracy the DNC made of its primaries, and how abysmally lame the platform was. And I posted somewhat often how the democrats failed to stand up to multinationals while hiding behind the faux-populism of victim-hood.

I'd like to reprise that somewhat with a more general analysis of democratic candidates and the party in general.

This is my opening, copied from a different thread:
Quote:

But I do think Pelosi is Schiff's beard in this. All of her calling on democrats to do the people's business and stop focusing on Trump has fallen, and is falling on deaf ears. Democrats but especially Schiff remain hyper-fixated on Trump. Now either everyone is treating Pelosi like a mousy substitute teacher and running amok while she meekly calls for attention over and over - which I doubt - or this is a plan to HIDE THAT THEY ARE INTENTIONALLY FAILING THE PEOPLE WHILE THEY PLAY POLITICAL GAMES. And this is all the more likely as Pelosi is defending Schiff.
If you're OK with me planting it here, I'll continue. Otherwise, I'll create another thread.

I don't see a problem with posting it here.

Are you saying the Dems will repeat their failed tactics and strategy from 2016?

Maybe I didn't make it clear, but I was thinking this thread was about Presidential candidates, of both parties. I had planned on another thread for Congressional Elections, but now was too far out to discuss that reasonably. Or I could join if a rational poster started one on topic.
If you are talking about Congressional races, you could start a new thread about that. Otherwise, all President candidates, tactics, strategies for 2020 would be welcome here, and I assume would fit within the topic envelope.
