"It's Extremely Sensitive" - Apple Chipmaker Crippled By Computer Virus
Profile picture for user Tyler Durden

Having conquered the 'four commas' club for the first time, a chink in Apple's armor appeared late Friday night when a computer virus crippled iPhone's sole chipmaker's factories - halting all production.

As BloombergQuint reports, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) plants were severely disrupted after a number of its fabrication tools had been infected by the virus, and while it had contained the problem and resumed some production, several of its factories won’t restart till at least Sunday.

Computer Virus Cripples IPhone Chipmaker TSMC Plants

Bloomberg) -- A computer virus halted several Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. factories Friday night, dealing the company one of its most severe disruptions as it ramps up chipmaking for Apple Inc.’s next iPhones.

The sole maker of the iPhone’s main processor said a number of its fabrication tools had been infected, and while it had contained the problem and resumed some production, several of its factories won’t restart till at least Sunday. The virus wasn’t introduced by a hacker, the company added in a statement.

It’s unclear who targeted TSMC, the world’s biggest contract manufacturer of chips for companies including Apple and Qualcomm Inc. It’s the first time a virus had ever brought down a TSMC facility, recalling the WannaCry cyberattacks of 2017 that forced corporations around the world to suspend operations as they rooted out the ransomware. TSMC is working on solutions now but said the degree of infection varied from factory to factory, and that it will provide more information Monday after it’s assessed the situation.

“TSMC has been attacked by viruses before, but this is the first time a virus attack has affected our production lines,” Chief Financial Officer Lora Ho told Bloomberg News by phone. She wouldn’t talk about how much revenue it would lose as a result of the disruption, or whether the facilities affected were involved in making iPhone chips.

Certainly an allegory for "Don't put your eggs in one basket" here.

Not that this is actually a funny thing, since it's a very good example of what could very well happen to far more important things that would drastically effect the lives of many people, but I did get a little chuckle reading it.

I remember the days when my brother and the rest of the Apple fanboys went around saying that Mac OS was immune to computer viruses.

LOL.... No.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

A similar story about a plastics manufacturer in Japan .... the only one that made a specific kind of plastic for memory chips, I believe. It caught on fire, and memory chips were not to be had for about six months.

It's a special problem when you combine "single point of failure" with "just in time" inventory, because if that "single point of failure" fails, you have no warehouse inventory to buffer the shortfall.

In a somewhat related vein did you know that all large cities are about 3 days away from food riots?

Sure. Anybody working in retail that has the presence of mind to pay attention would realize that.

If we didn't get any trucks for about 5 days to a week, most of our food/drink related products would be completely empty. If news were to get out that we were having shortages, I'd be surprised if it took 3 days to be empty.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"If we didn't get any trucks for about 5 days to a week"

I've lived through that when an exceptionally bad blizzard pushed drifts over the tops of telephone poles during Buffalo's "blizzard of 77", and all transport got shut down. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blizzard_of_%2777

The first thing that happened was people ran to the stores and hoarded. My roommate and I didn't. On our way to running out of food completely, first we ate normal stuff like rice and beans, worked our way down to oatmeal and mayo for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; then it was A1 steaksauce soup, which was literally the last thing in either the frig and cupboards.

Not that we were in danger of starving, since blizzards are only temporary events, but it sure was a lesson in how fragile your situation can be.

Following The Downburst on 4 July 1977, we couldn't get traffic through for 2 weeks. More than a week just to get County roads open, and replenish gas, which was mostly used for chainsaws.
But we were on a lake, so lots of fish to be had.

Independence Day Derecho of 1977 [???]

Quote:

The Independence Day Derecho of 1977 was a derecho, or long-lived windstorm associated with a fast-moving band of thunderstorms, that occurred in the northern Great Plains of the U.S. on July 4, 1977. It lasted around 15½ hours. The derecho formed in Minnesota around 10 a.m. CDT on July 4 and became more intense around noon in the central part of the state. The derecho produced winds of 80-100 mph (130–160 km/h) in northern Wisconsin felling thousands of trees in the northern part of the state.[1]

Blizzard of '77

Quote:

Never heard that term before. It took the weatherguessers a while to come up with Downburst.
Thousands of trees? Major understatement, I'd believe thousands of acres of trees, maybe thousand of square miles of trees. Entire forests scattered like toothpicks.

The key to the destructive power was how high the wind formation pinnacle was, before coming straight down and splattering the ground.

This thread has inspired me to be a bit more proactive in stocking some food.

I'm already going to be going a bit negative this month, so why not go a little more in the red to buy some food I'm going to eat anyhow? I was kind of already starting to do that recently, but I just bought a whole bunch of stuff I wouldn't have needed for a few weeks, or at least until I go back to work, but I figured why not.

I've also been driving around with a full tank of gas since I fixed the oil leak. I'm 39 years old and that's something I've never done in my entire life until about a month ago. Guess we all got to grow up sometime.

I'm not going to start hoarding for the apocalypse or anything, but I've easily got 3 to 4 weeks of food on me now.

Do Right, Be Right. :)
