I'm posting this review from the Rolling Stone because it came quite close to what I felt about the movie:

...especially "there's a unique groove to be found in the middle of all of this, and when the movie syncs up everything from its auteur's facility for sight gags to the actors' impressive young-fuck-up-meets-old-fart chemistry, Wilderpeople generates enough good will to make the stalest of plot devices feel semi-fresh."

It was quirky, offbeat and somewhat sitcom-influenced, but it delivered louds of laughs because of the chemistry between to two lead actors - Sam Niell and a young
kid named Julian Dennison. Watch out for this kid he has great comic timing. Catch
it if you want some good old-fashioned belly laughs, and a couple of guffaws thrown
in for good measure.
