This is the one time that the TV ads for this movie are not exaggerating when they say move over Avatar. Well, I think it's on an even keel, at least.

Life of Pi is an excellent 3D movie. Plain and simple. Actually, it is an excellent movie period, worthy of an Oscar nomination. Yes, I said it. I'll go one further - the actor who plays the titular character should also receive a nomination for his work in the movie, Suraj Sharma. Remember that name.

I also believe that the cinematographer, Claudio Miranda, will be extended a nomination for his brilliant work. The 3D aspect of this film was flawless and, coupled with Miranda's efforts, breathtaking and awe-inspiring. It was masterfully woven into the storytelling and proved to enhance the movie tremendously. It was both magical and inspirational, much like Pi's story.

Director Ang Lee chose the emotional and spiritual story of a young boy's journey into adulthood. But it is more than that, it is a wonderous ride for the audience as we embark, along with Pi, on a journey for the ages. It's okay for you to know that he is shipwrecked and travels with a Bengal tiger, that's the main part of the story, because it is in that journey that we discover who Pi is. He narrates throughout and we experience his transformation from a boy into a man who seeks the universal truth - why are we here and what is our place in the grand scheme of things.

Move over Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon......this is Lee's masterpiece. The pacing is spot on, the plot slowly unfolds like a good novel but quickly envelops you in the story's grandness. The acting, especially by Sharma, a newcomer, is excellent. I was engrossed from beginning to end with one very minor flaw. I will leave that up to you to decide. This film may also be nominated for Best Director and Best Film, it is that good.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

It's on my list to see, but probably not in 3D. A good film doesn't need that enhancement, and from everything I've read it's a great story well told and that's enough for me. I bought a used copy of the book recently but haven't gotten around to it yet, and will likely wait until I've seen the film.

One man's treasure is anothers TRASH.

This movie is the absolute perfect example of "NOTHING is WORSE than an idea- ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S THE ONLY ONE YOU HAVE" Pi couldn't make it through one sentence without the word god, so this was a movie just for fluffy wuffies and the people they try to sucker into a religion- ANY religion. What was trying to be a spiritual quest came off as thinly veiled preachy(ignore your doubts and be religious anyway??? WTF???!!!). And they beat that to death! When you have to try that hard to rationalize being spiritual something isn't working.

Not to mention Pi had to be the BIGGEST IDIOT EVER. He even called himself an idiot! Who wants to see a movie about the least resourceful kid in HISTORY??? I've seen toddlers do better with less

The ONLY redeeming things about this movie was the TIGER (almost entirely CGI, btw) and the SCENERY...The entire audience was stunned into silence after that they had just spent an HOUR AND A HALF watching a nature film with no freaking point!

Hey Wish,

You are entitled to your opinion, and yes there were some "dumb" things in the film when compared to real life, but when I look at Van Gogh's Starry Night I get a story that may well be different from the reality of a star studded night.

I did not feel as though I was being preached to, despite the main character's journey, his parents influence, and his own curiosity of several religions introduced in the film. It felt more like a fable or a parable. I went along for the ride, but there was a point where I felt there was no point. I kept thinking about it and tried to figure it out, then I read your comment - (ignore your doubts and be religious anyway??? WTF???!!!)- and it hit me. That's partly the main theme. It was one boy's doubt about religion and God in his life and how it shaped his life as a man. His spiritual quest. I thought of the ending and how anti-climatic it was, and how it made no sense given the story's theme. But now I see.

It reminded me of the hurricane scene in Forrest Gump when Lt. Dan comes to terms with God during the storm.

Hey EC,

Just so you know, the 3D is not the "Battleship" type, but more like in Avatar or Prometheus. I don't recall anything "popping out" at you to let you know you're watching 3D. It's more like enhancing scenes and the cinematography and adding to the storytelling quality, making it almost fable-like.

My son read the book years ago, and, from what he remembers, the film follows the book pretty well. I've been inspired to read the book, much like when I saw A Clockwork Orange in the 70s and read Anthony Burgess' book of the same name afterward in the 90s.

Either way, enjoy.
