Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

This article, which surrounds the phenomenon of Minecraft, brings up an interesting point. In recent years, focus in gaming development has been on games which involve a lot of confrontation and violence. Minecraft may reveal a largely untapped reality in the psyche of humankind- we like to create.

The success of a game like this makes me hopeful for the future of humanity. I love virtual murder and mayhem as much as the next guy, but I love knowing that people find joy in creative avenues, too. This is often lost in the flood of Tom Clancy's Kill Squad 12, Grand Theft Auto: Somalia, and Grisly Murder Part 8 - Grislier and Murderier.

Wait, what? There's a new Grand Theft Auto, and it's set in Somalia?!

AWESOME-SAUCE!

(Just kidding, Anthony)

I thought about getting Minecraft on my PC. In my oldest favorite game, I am building town more than 90% of the time, & avoid war as long as I can. (SSI / Stormfront Studios / Stronghold, 1993) Of course, it's too boring by now. :frown:

First computer game I learned was Ultima I.

If I have to react to others all the time, then they own my mind more than I do. If I let others tell me how to feel, I lose my ability to choose happiness. If I let others tell me who I am, I've vacated self-definition. Finally, I realized how foolish I was to give others such power.

I dunno about Minecraft, but the ONLY thing I didn't despise about Eve Online was its original (i.e. non-T2/T3) crafting system, which was in fact designed by SSI, not CCP. I've never, ever seen it done better - you can start right with the mined, unprocessed ore, and from there build ANYTHING... That Brutix in the hangar ? I mined the ore, I processed the ore, wrote the plans and constructed it myself, every single step.

And that was one of the few things I didn't totally hate about FFXI either, but even THAT required ludicrous time investment for pathetic results, like everything else there.

SWTOR too, first thing I jumped on - Anthony knows well, any MMO with crafting, soon as I know you're there useful stuff I've build starts showing up in your mailbox, cause I *like* building things.

Lets see... Dungeon Keeper, Dungeon Keeper II, Evil Genius, all about building the lair, baby. (And I REALLY like a nice villain lair with minions, I do!)

Most games, the crafting system exists either as a way to FORCE trade/social interaction, or to sell you things, especially in games where the component you need is real-money-only, and stuff like that, or is totally broken from get, like City of Villains where you don't have enough inventory/storage space *TO* bother crafting, and Champions Online is even worse.

And don't even get me started on the ABOMINATION that is FF 14's so-called-crafting system.

Anyhows, yes, I like to build stuff, really really - and so few games let you do it.

Oh, and in regards to Grand Theft Auto: THIS, cause it's damn funny.

DESU!!! *sounds of machinegun fire*
