I feel there's some poignant lesson here about the damage done by exposure to the evils of the world.

But perhaps I am wrong and he was always crazy. Certainly it takes a special kind of person to go to a third-world country and document its horrors.

No Anthony, trust your first response.

Remember what I said about some things in this world being so awful that just KNOWING about them can do that to you - which is why I am often so cagey with details.

I suspect that something similar happened to PN, which is in great part how he got to be the way he is - winding up 5150 after confronting mindbreaking horror is all too common, recovery of any kind is not.

One thing I have found though, is that the wickeder, the nastier, the person is who comes up head-on with the very face of evil, the better they survive the experience, the evil within protects from the evil without, as it were.
I can go toe-to-toe with some seriously horrific stuff and walk off with nothing more than the desire for a stiff drink, although I am well aware that says nothing good about my personal character...

But most people, most DECENT people, who wind up in that situation will not survive it mentally and emotionally, which is why I encourage them down gentler paths - there's more than one way to address an issue besides head-on.
