Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Having read articles deriding this project, even going to far as to say that the vehicles could not operate from carriers, I found this video quite interesting.

Apparently, it is indeed possible to take off from and land on a carrier without a catapult or arresting wire.

You have heard of the Hawker Harrier, have you not? This is pretty much just a rethink of that same basic idea. Heck, even the Soviets did it way back in the 70s...

Point being, it IS possible. But is it *practical*?

Hello,

Perhaps the next generation of aircraft carriers can be smaller, with less runway space, no traditional launching apparatus, and still perform the same mission profile.

It just depends on whether the savings on the cost of the carrier is more or less than the cost of the planes versus the standard variety.

And whether they'd actually build smaller, cheaper carriers.

Well, it kinda depends on whether the plane can do more than take off or land on the carrier - a lot depends on whether or not the plane can actually do its mission, or even get into the air when needed. Most of the criticisms I've heard of the JSF revolve around maintenance downtime and a complicated flight system plagued with issues and problems. The best, most agile fighter in the world is of no use if it spends 10,000 hours being rebuilt for every hour of actual flight time.

ETA: I get where you're coming from; I really do. I just question the government's (and the military's) willingness to actually do anything like this. I can see them *possibly* building smaller carriers to utilize the JSF. But I don't see 'em doing this INSTEAD OF building the megacarriers; I see them doing this IN ADDITION TO the large carriers.

Hello,

I saw this on CNN and it was on-topic, so I thought I'd share.
