Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I have been following the military reaction to the wikilinks disclosure with a combination of amusement and dismay.

"Defense Secretary Robert Gates warned that the massive leak will have a significant impact on troops and allies."

I agree with the Defense Secretary, however I think his greatest outrage and shame should be reserved for the military's poor information security management procedures. This, compounded by the shame he should feel about a military organization that inspires its own employees with so much revulsion that they are prepared to disclose vast amounts of internal data without any bribery being necessary. This is definitely a place where the military establishment needs to look inward and ask themselves 'why.' Why was it so easy for someone to acquire and leak this information? Why would someone feel like doing so was a good idea?

"Assange, in turn, said Gates "has overseen the killings of thousands of children and adults" in Afghanistan and Iraq."

I found this statement to be questionable, and to contain more than a little hypocrisy. The Defense Secretary is saying that a civilian has overseen the killings of thousands of children and adults.

It's enough to make you want to laugh and cry when the Defense Secretary makes such a statement. Someone buy the man a mirror, because even if he believes it necessary, he clearly does not remember the definition of 'Collateral Damage.' Either that, or he reserves the waiver of responsibility only for himself. Perhaps to Mr. Gates, The War on Terror has justifiable Collateral Damage, but The War for Truth does not.

Meanwhile, this attitude, coupled with every lie and coverup of our military and our government, sows the Dragon's Teeth for a future army in the fertile lands of our enemies.
