$300 Million budget.

Projected opening weekend between $27 and $34 Million domestic.

Not good, Disney.

You needed $1.2 Billion from Lilo and Stitch to break even for all your bombs so far this year, and it's questionable right now if you'll even beat Minecraft's $950 Million on that one.

You put out only 3 movies last year and made a ton of money.

What the hell are you doing?

These budgets are out of control

Bob Iger is not happy with Google AI today...

Quote:

Pixar's "Elio" is projected to have a weak box office opening, potentially marking one of the lowest debuts in the studio's history. Early tracking suggests a domestic opening weekend of only $30-45 million, against a reported $300 million budget, making a significant loss likely. While reviews are mixed (61 on Metacritic, 79% on Rotten Tomatoes), the film's buzz is muted, and the poor box office predictions are concerning for Pixar.

And who did they cite for this?

Ryan Kinel - RK Outpost

He's one of the worst anti-woke grifters out there.

You know that the times, they have already changed if the folks running google are allowing their AI model to give a bump to RK Outpost and cite their video as their generated answer to "elio flop" today.

What do you got from Doomcock for us today, Google AI?

Is Kathleen Kennedy finally getting fired this week after 5 straight years of being fired next week?

They threw some in the trash heap. But I think 2025 was their dumping ground for all the woke trash that was already finished and cost so much to make that it would have been foolish for them not to release the stuff.

That doesn't explain why they would go ahead with the brand damage of the Ironheart streaming show on Disney+ at all, but it would explain all of their movie releases so far this year outside of Lilo and Stitch.

Sure, they all lost money in the end, but at the same time they all made enough money to at least cover the production budgets before marketing/theater cuts are counted in. They know that even in 2025 they still have enough idiots to make some of that money back.

Like I've said in some of the other threads, I think that after October 1st, you're not going to see much if any woke trash out of Disney for a long while. (Excluding Avatar 3, because that's been extremely popular woke trash because at least up until this point they were able to hide all the woke shit behind the spectacle of it all).

I might be wrong, but that's my prediction right now.

Bruce claims that it had "strong" preview numbers with $3 Million in Thursday, but even he thinks because it was Juneteenth that his model is over-predicting the weekend and he's showing it's going to fall well below 2nd place behind 28 Years Later and last weekend's How to Train Your Dragon.

s-and-Elio-start-out-strong-but-final-weekend-results-uncertain

I don't know what crack he's smoking, but a mere 1% of the production budget for a movie on preview night is awful.

Some comparisons to family movies just this year...

How to Train Your Dragon made $11 Million in previews on a $150 Million budget (half of Elio's budget)

Minecraft made $10.5 Million in previews on a $150 Million budget.

Lilo and Stitch made $14.5 Million in previews on a $100 Million budget.

Even if it breaks Bruce's prediction and makes $35 Million here and gets a huge international relative bump of an additional $55 Million overseas, that's only $90 Million or 30% of the production budget worldwide on opening weekend.

We're talking Indy 5 levels of failure on this one unless it has serious legs like Pixar's near-flop Elemental ended up having. But this opening weekend number is going to be so freakin' bad I don't see how it could ever dig itself out from under that massive budget black hole.

Even if we go super generous and say -40% drops for the first 3 weeks AND we give it a $90 Million opening that it's not actually going to achieve, we're still well under the $300 Million production budget even after 4 weekends, with no hope of ever doubling that, let alone getting the 2.5x it needs to break even. By weekend 5, it will only bring in $11.4 Million for the weekend worldwide under the BEST possible scenario of only 40% drops weekend-to-weekend for 5 weeks straight.

Those are horrible preview numbers for Elio, Bruce. Get your tongue out of Iger's ass.

OOPS!

$21 Million opening weekend in the US + $14 Million international for a worldwide opening of $35 Million.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn......

Quote:

The biggest “miss” this weekend is undoubtedly Elio, which will have the worst opening weekend ever for a Pixar movie, lower than Elemental’s $29.6 million two years ago. That film ended with $154.4 million domestically thanks to fantastic legs, and there’s reason to expect Elio will have a relatively good run too. Reaching $100 million domestically seems like a long shot, though. Perhaps even more worrying is the fact that Elio will only manage $14 million internationally this weekend, with no territory contributing even $2 million to that total.

That wasn't a glitch or missing international numbers. It really did only make $14 Million internationally.

And even though Bruce seems to think that it will have "fantastic" legs like Elemental did, saying there's reason to expect that it will without stating what that reason is, he doesn't even think that it will make $100 Million domestic.

I see that Bruce has dropped the production budget for Elio from $300 Million down to only $150 Million now.

I find this odd. He's had it at $300 Million for a while now. But I was seeing reporting nearly everywhere else claiming only $150 to possibly $250 Million. And those claiming $250 Million were saying that marketing was included in that figure.

I've never seen behavior like that on the Production Budget number before, so I have no idea what to really think here.

But if it can't even get $100 Million here and it only opened with $14 Million internationally, there's a good chance that it doesn't even make that slashed production budget back. And even if it does, it still needs $375 Million to break even. This one easily loses Disney another $200 Million, if not closer to $250 Million.
