I was excited to see they made a Cowboy Bebop movie, but then I read it and it takes place in between a few episodes of the first and only season.

The ending was... weird.

But in retrospect, it might be the reason that I was left longing for more and I still remember it to this day.

If you watch it, you can come out thinking that it left on a Sara Connor Chronicles level cancellation, but having never looked into it, I wouldn't say that for sure. I could see this ending done intentionally.

I don't remember thinking of Cowboy Bebop at all when I watched Firefly, but I do recall discussions taking place where they said that Joss ripped it off. I didn't take any of those accusations seriously, but you certainly can find parallels between the two series.

I always thought that Joss was far more inspired by Eric Frank Russel's "The Great Explosion", and I always thought of Firefly as a look far into the future of that Universe, with "Legacy of Heorot" taking place some time in between them.

ETA: Come to think of it, Cowboy Bebop could be in that universe as well. It would probably have to be even further into the future than Firefly though since there is no America/China thing going on if memory serves. I'll have to watch it again.

Are you suggesting that you've never been critical of anything that you weren't a professional at?

If you are, than I am calling you a liar.

I didn't say the man's work was shit. I loved Spirited Away. The other two I've seen by him were gorgeous, but very much less stellar. What surprised me the most was that Princess Mononoke was the only one I'd heard of before when I thought that it was by far the least impressive of the three.

In the world we find ourselves in today, I would have assumed the reason for this was because the critics and oscar circles applauded Princess Mononoke for being so Stunning and Brave by having a powerful woman leading the flick, but this group of flicks totally turns that notion on its head.

Spirited Away had a CLEAR female lead, both in the roles of protagonist and antagonist. I found this to be the best of the bunch. Howl's Moving Castle could be argued to be a shared male/female role... The titular character was the male and the clear redemption arc, but the female lead was who you were to see through the eyes of.

Princess Mononoke, despite the title, had a clear male lead with the Princess playing supporting cast. The characters were not interesting... at all. It's probably still better than most of the Disney movies coming out since the turn of the century, but I can't see how anybody over 12 years old would really get anything out of it beyond appreciation of the great art style.

I'm still going to be looking into Miyazaki's stuff. But I'm dipping back into his older catalog before he became an Oscar favorite.

And trying to apply "Oscarism" to this situation might be a bit presumptive and unfair on my part. Maybe this is simply the case of a man getting old and losing his touch. It's not like that hasn't happened quite often in Hollywood.

I'm looking at YOU Spielberg.

If you're going to watch the 2021 version, I'd definitely watch the cartoon first.

You have every right to believe that they will fumble the shit out of this thing with that being the trend these days.

I'm hopeful that it will be written well though. We certainly have the special effects necessary to recreate the Universe of Cowboy Bebop today, assuming that they have a good enough budget to make it look the part. It will really kill the immersion if their sets are made of cardboard and the special effects look like the crap that the Sci-Fi channel churns out.

I watched the first two episodes yesterday. It's the first time since the early 2000's that I'd seen it, and the first time I'd seen it in HD on a flat screen. I watched them originally on a 27" CRT.

I was kind of blown away by the beauty of the art in Cowboy Bebop. I had no idea it looked that good from my time spent with it on that ancient TV. Of course they use a lot of still frames like many Japan artists do to save on animation budget, but that's part of the charm, IMO. But particularly the art used in space is gorgeous. There's no way that the 2021 live-action series is going to gain any traction if they don't do that justice with some Alita caliber special effects.

And it goes without saying hopefully they keep the woke shit out of it. It would be great if they left politics out of it all together.

One can dream, right?

Usually the horror genre can be good for cheap indie stuff

A lot of you guys have probably already seen this movie but I have not

I'm going to give the 2018 horror film 'A Quiet Place' a go I hear good hype about it and watched trailers online, upstate New York filmed around NY's Lake Erie Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York on its western, southern, and New York's Lake Erie eastern shores, abandoned factories in NY, maybe shot near Lake Ontario.. so it is Indie and outside of Hollywood, I think it made a lot of money and has a cult following and seems to have instesting use of sounds, monsters or lack of sounds.

It porbably cost more than 10+ Million so I'm not sure if it fits in that "Under 15 Million" parameters...but it was Low Budget if I remember reading about it.

Even if its B-movie crap I will probably enjoy it for the effort they put in

My tastes have changed extremely since I was a kid. Horror B flicks was almost exclusively what my friends, brothers and I watched growing up.

But today, getting me to watch a horror flick is an almost impossible task. The last actually good one I saw was The Ring, and the last one I found entertaining for the spectacle of it all and how much it made on peanuts was the original Paranormal Activity.

There's just so much garbage out there in that category. There always was, but I feel that back in the 70's to the mid 90's or so there was also a much different feel to the production of it all.

I'm sure there are a lot of factors at play (even acknowledging that a large factor is personal taste), but the genre has lost its charm.

With rare exception (like The Ring), we all know going into a horror flick that we're about to watch something that is going to be bad... but rather than derive pleasure out of the terribleness of the flick, I usually just walk away wishing I could have that 90 minutes back and do something else with the time.

I really don't know if I, Tonya was a low budget or independent film, but I enjoyed it a lot. Margot Robbie was awesome in it, and her surrounding entourage of incredibly stupid people, makes it a memorable dark comedy. I also liked Black Klansman.

I'm getting back into the old school Documentary films, I had a lot recommended to me already, docu movies with low budgets, that way they can keep budgets 10+ Million-ish area. I do enjoy movies I might watch the crime coemdy drama 'Kajillionaire' and I enjoyed Army of the Dead but that's not small enough, in no way small to classify as 'Indie' its got a big massive sicifi horror fantasy budget for those fx shots, I'm probably going to be watching some Nature or Science documentary maybe real life stuff Allen v. Farrow about Woddy DaughterFucker Allen who hung out with Epstein, you have all that Nature BBC National Geographic David Attenborough stuff or music like 'Tina' documentary film that follows the life and career of musician Tina Turner or stuff like 'Framing Britney Spears' crime drama movies like Tiger King or Murder Among the Mormons, Escape from Mogadishu is a South Korea movie about ambassadors from both North and South Korea who are forced to team up in order to escape the Somali Civil War or you have the CIA drug one called Wormwood or the tv kids show producers 'Street Gang How We Got to Sesame Street'.

The rescue is worth a watch if you like a documentary, a dark event of kids trapped and teams trying to rescue with a happy rescue ending. I heard good things about South Korean film this year past and new movie summer season coming, if you like Documentary instead of movies there is National Geographic “The Rescue” docu movie and other type of Docu drama, a movie called Language Lessons an American drama film directed and co-written by Natalie Morales, CODA Child of Deaf Adults another getting buzz, Mekong Hotel Thailand, Drive My Car Japanese, German film. There are many oldies to watch, classic US fnatasy or horror, there is also an old 80s movie from Philippines about 3 families 'Oro, Plata, Mata' its about the invasion, Japanese occuption during WW2 and the shocking change in family life, Filipino seemed to have a cultural explosion of movies during the late 70s? 1980s it was kinda like HongKong culture was everywhere, the HongKong movie industry survived but in Philippines then it all died off, more recently there seems to be a bunch of cartoon anime tv animation stuff coming from S.Korea, South America and the Philippines, some are shorts but others are bigger productions, maybe US and European studios are funding stuff over there? Modern 'Pinoy' horror is perhaps becoming a thing with stuff like 'The Road' and 'Yanggaw' maybe taking a page from the Japan Ringu franchise. The second golden age of China cinema is said to have come with productions like Yellow Earth and Farewell My Concubine, there is a cultural disruption with the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, the 5th generation films include people like Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, the post-1990 Chinese move on to other film styles like 'Black Coal Thin Ice' the movie A Land Imagined and Suzhou River...I watched this one its kinda sad and ‘Sixth Generation’ Chinese films are known for their documentary type feel and low cost production, movie So Long, My Son and movie Beijing Bicycle are also classed as 6th generation. While some Japanese films are known to be wacky, the Chinese are classed as more real and gritty, there is some debate as to what 6th generation film really is, some say its style is due to lack of financial support and the new post-1989 censorship policies.

Indie Animation might become a thing again, Ralph Bakshi involved in stuff like Fire and Ice, Fritz the Cat, the Wizards movie, the Japan styled Castlevania is a horror animation, so there might be horror animation series or movies coming from some studios. The movie Cool world had a Budget $28 million the Box office during its time but it only made $14.1 million so it was considered a flop, another animted turkey or box office bomb but I think there was something creative and risky about these types of movies like TheMask and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. French British animated The Illusionist by Sylvain Chomet is interesting, Song of the Sea by Tomm Moore, the Chinese Have A Nice Day by Liu Jian, Tito On Ice by Max Andersson and Helena Ahonen or King of Pigs by Yeon Sang-ho have a lot of hype behind their animation art syles. This new joint Japan US styled 'Castlevania' is a tv show and it seems to be a joint US Japan thing its not a movie but a TV Series, I think there might be other stuff coming from Japan maybe animated movies like StarWars Japan anime. Argentina film might be making a comeback with stuff like The Secret in Their Eyes, Heroic Losers and Argentina's The Distinguished Citizen, some Latin American actors and film makers also are doing productions with Spain or in other parts of Europe. Bornholmer Straße Open the Wall is said to be good and there's always Lola rennt (Run Lola Run) people might recognize Franka Potente from 'The Bourne' movie franchise. There is some hype about an upcoming The Northman is an upcoming American epic historical film directed by Robert Eggers with singer Björk, and Willem Dafoe appear in supporting roles. There is also Deadwood The Movie a 2019 American Western television film from the tv series.
I watched 'The Rescue' its good, a chronicle of Thai cave resuce story, enthralling, against-all-odds team of overseas divers helps rescue these kids trapped in a cave.

Death Note 2006 film is also pretty enjoyable it is based on weird Japanese comicbook cartoon animtion.

Most Japan films are low budget but I don't know if they were able to cap it at the budget of $15 Million.

Netflix did their own Hollywood style Death Note loosely adapted from the Japanese manga and movie but it was trashed by fans of the original, the crappy Netflix remake cost $40 million, the retards also used real footage of a 2010 train collision in Buizingen, Belgium in which 19 people died as part of the film.

If States opened up would small American films or Japanese film or S.Korean or Indie American films or stuff from Europe or South America make money at the box office “The Cow Who Sang Into the Future”. Spider-Man No Way Home a big block buster is the only thing making money while everything flops? Waiting for Bojangles I was expecting an indie US tap dancing movie with that title, instead it seems to be a weird Tango Family Drama French film, Jujutsu Kaisen a Japan animation is making tens of millions or maybe “Hatching” is indie. In Russia Last Warrior: A Messenger of Darkness January 2022, the film became one of the highest-grossing local-language release of all time in Russia, normally Hollywood sells big in Russia but now anymore, they have their own film surpassing a previous movie called The Last Warrior with a take of 1.88 billion rubles or making $25.5 million ish ... will it be indie or blockbuster that survive the Post Corona Hollyweird Apocalypse??

With Covid lockdowns and Woke SJW Antifa cancel culture arriving before Corona... do people now have to move to Texas or Florida to get the indie films released at the box office?

Yeah. My old man says the Showtime exclusive is for something like 3 months and is an abridged version of it. I think it's 2 hours long, but the full one that will be available after the exclusivity deal with Showtime is done is actually 4 hours.

Knowing Oliver Stone, you might want to wait for that version to drop.

Some hype about

'Phoenix Rising' documentary by Amy Berg is a detailed exposé of the abuse that actor Evan Rachel Wood is alleged to have suffered at Goth weirdo artist Marilyn Manson.

A world music film 'The Disciple' sound and tonal scales and melancholic rhythms on par set against Mumbai’s bustling cityscape

A movie about 'Strawberry Mansion' neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania aka Summerville, had many wealthiest residents, came to have a high Jewish population, but the 1950s and 1960s brought an economic decline and urban decay.

'We’re All Going to the World’s Fair' coming of age horror weird drama, teenage Casey alone in her attic bedroom, scrolling the internet under the glow-in-the-dark stars.

Did Evan Rachel Wood hook up with Marylin Manson or something?

If so, are we supposed to feel sorry for her if something bad happened to her during that particular relationship after seeing this movie?

I for one won't feel sorry for anybody who was abused by Marilyn Manson in a relationship, regardless of what genitalia they're packing under their undies.

Did you not have MTV in your house Mrs. Wood?

I liked Venom. Probably more than I should have, and probably because Hardy was the star and I thought so highly of Locke.

I didn't care much for the sequel, but it was one of the rare times I've been in a theater in the last 10 years and it was with my brother and dad, so we had a good time. Only $5 per ticket there too, so I feel it was worth $5 for the experience.

Everything Everywhere All At Once.

I had a LOT of fun watching that one. Very pleasantly surprised here, and I'm glad I went into it knowing nothing.

I think it possibly went a little too "silly" for my tastes and I think the third act suffered from that, somewhat to the same degree that I feel the third act faltered in Free Guy, but we don't always need things to be serious.

I was left wondering what that movie would have been like had they gone totally somber and straight with it. The first act had me thinking it was going to be a much different movie than it turned out being.

In any event, I give it at least an 8 out of 10. Maybe a 9 if I'm being generous. I can't imagine somebody watching it and not liking it.

ETA: I was very glad they did it in English. I also didn't know that was the case going into it and I'm glad that after the first few minutes they dropped the subtitles and you weren't forced to read them the entire movie.

Not that I give a single shit about the Oscars... In fact, if I didn't hear about it on the radio while working the other day I wouldn't have even known they were happening... But I wanted to post this because I thought it was very strange that a good movie that I actually thoroughly enjoyed won so many awards.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/oscars-2023-everything-everywhere-all-at-
once-most-awards
/

They inject a bit of woke in the article itself, but didn't go too overboard with it.

Here's hoping that everybody involved with the movie is as good in real life as they were acting in that movie, because even though I don't watch much new stuff these days I feel they probably all deserved the wins.

I don't give two shits that Michelle Yeoh was the first Asian woman to win best actress or the first non-white women to win it in 20 years. I'm just glad that she won it. And seeing Ke Huy Quan on screen again after all these years and topping it off with a Best Supporting Actor at 51 years old is awesome too. I'm even glad that Jamie Lee Curtis finally won an Oscar after all these years even if she's proven to be kind of a virtue signalling jerkoff in real life on Twitter.

If you haven't seen this movie yet, you should.

Inside (2023): Starring Willem Dafoe

I'm just shy of saying that I loved this movie. I think it was maybe 20 minutes longer than it should have been and dragged a little at times.

This fits in well with one of my favorite genres of movies which I've never actually heard a name for so I'll call them "Diorama Movies". Movies where a large part or the entire thing is filmed in one location. Not necessarily a claustrophobic location, but they usually are. Phone Booth is an example of one that is not claustrophobic since even though the protagonist is held hostage in the booth it's in the middle of New York City (while ironically filmed in LA, but whatever). Locke is another movie that isn't claustrophobic since he's in a car the whole movie but he's not trapped inside of it and could have gotten out any time he wanted to. But others like Devil (trapped in an elevator with... something) and Circle (trapped in what ultimately ended up being a space ship manned by hostile alien life) are.

Not many actors could have pulled a movie like this off. Willem Dafoe certainly isn't the only one who could have, but he was excellent in this and it's one of my favorite roles he's ever played. Tom Hanks could have done it, and really... he already has done it in Cast Away.

This one isn't going to be making my top 10 list of all time or anything, but it might have if they did a better job editing and trimming it down. I think there were just too many scenes that showed the same thing over and over that could have been cut out without sacrificing letting you know how futile the situation was, and there were other weird things going on in his brain that just didn't really need to be there because unless I missed something on my first watch they just really didn't add anything to the story.

I'll watch it again some time.

I can't recommend it to everybody. I don't think it would play well at all with a mainstream audience.

But if you love indie flicks, especially the ones that artsy-fartsy people would talk about at some expensive dinner party, give this one a watch.

7.5/10

I saw Color Out of Space with my dad the other day. We're both huge Nicholas Cage fans.

We're also both huge sci-fi fans. I forgot that it was H.P. Lovecraft though, and my dad's only exposure to Lovecraft was his writing, which I fully agree was an awful read. Once I remembered that it was Lovecraft after somebody was wearing a Miskatonic University t-shirt very early on, I kind of regretted the decision to make that the movie we were watching for the day.

I wasn't wrong in worrying.

It was OK. Almost all of the movies made from Lovecraft stories are OK. None of them are actually GOOD. I was really hoping that this one would be the exception, but it wasn't. Nic Cage did not disappoint, and did his crazy Nic Cage stuff in the back half of the movie, but it's still a Lovecraft movie. This one is better than almost all other Lovecraft movies, but it's still just OK.

I don't understand what it is about Lovecraft that Hollywood can NEVER get right. Even some Steven King adaptations were pretty excellent even though some of them were downright terrible and most of them were OK.

I love Lovecraft's Lore, and I love stories that OTHER writers have made that were influenced by him. Video game adaptations of his stories have been surprisingly good compared to the movies. And interestingly enough, I think that's because actually LIVING in a Lovecraft story makes for a MUCH BETTER Lovecraft experience than watching somebody else living in it.

The movie In The Mouth of Madness, which was heavily inspired by Lovecraft is in my top 10 of all time. Event Horizon was better than OK, although it gets far too gory and dark for my tastes in the 3rd act (and legend has it that it was SERIOUSLY toned down before it went to theaters and some of the scenes left on the cutting room floor would have had you vomiting in your seat at the theater).

Color Out of Space is a BEAUTIFULLY filmed movie. Cinematographer Steve Annis was worth every penny they spent on him. Special Effects on a movie that only had a budget of $6 to $12 million were surprisingly acceptable too.

Some of the events that happened were so absurd, particularly because of the reactions of the characters to the insanity unfolding around them. We got some great laughs out of the last 30 minutes of the flick, which made up for how otherwise OK the whole thing ended up being. Once we stopped taking the movie seriously at all it felt like we were the guys on Red Letter Media (YouTube) just cracking jokes at all the dumb shit we were seeing happen on screen.

The end of the movie just totally sucked. My old man said "Where's the payoff"?

Well... There wasn't any.

It was a 2 hour movie without any point or purpose.

I never read the short story "The Colour Out of Space" it was based off of because, as I said before, anything written by Lovecraft is a freakin' terrible and unenjoyable read, but I can't imagine at all that this was how he ended his own story. It certainly was not his style.

Would I recommend it to anyone? Only to people who like Lovecraft and/or Nicolas Cage being Nicolas Cage and/or people who get together regularly to enjoy Bad Movie Night.

Critics and Audiences seem to have enjoyed it though, which is truly a rare occurrence in the 2020's. Although that may be attributable to there only being around 50 audience reviews compared to 210 critic reviews. Critics gave it 86% while the Audience gave it an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I don't think it got the reviews that it deserved from anyone.

6.0/10

EXTERNAL REVIEW UPDATE: Yeah. I just checked on IMDB and with a much more substantial voting pool of 51,305 people, it gets a 6.2 out of 10.

That review aggregate is much more based in reality.

I like some Lovecraft stuff but I was young when I first looked at Lovecraft and the English felt too difficult or old when I was a kid. Speaking of Lovecraftian, yup the movie In Mouth of Madness entertains, which was heavily inspired by Lovecraft...It's hard to enjoy some adult books when you are very youngt, I tried reading Lovecraft long long ago, I remember they crash the boat into a tentacle monster...but I found the book very difficult, like trying to read Dickens, Kill a Mockingbird, Pride and Prejudice, or Shakespeare for school, I would probably enjoy it a lot more today.

Maybe themes of Lovecraft are also in Beyond the Black Rainbow, The Endless 2017
Spring 2014? Masking Threshold, Venus 2022, Mandy 2018, also there is The Cabin in the Woods and Underwater Kristen Stewart, Vincent Cassel, ....although I think this is a big Hollywood budget

You could try it again now man, but it's bad reading at any age. I wasn't introduced to Lovecraft until I was in my early 20's when I was an avid reader and it was miserable. It's worse than reading Tolkien and almost as bad as trying to read the Bible.

Great flick in my book. Makes you wonder why they can do "Lovecraft Inspired" right in the movies, but nobody can seem to get Lovecraft himself done.

I liked To Kill a Mockingbird in school. I even liked Great Expectations. Shakespeare sucks, IMO. I can't imagine I'd really get into it today either.

I've never seen any of those, except for Cabin in the Woods. That one was certainly Lovecraftian. I loved that movie because they ended it right. If there was a "Hollywood" ending for the two who made it to the end (or the entire world for that matter) I wouldn't have rated it so high on my personal list... something that the makers of Color out of Space either didn't get, or maybe Lovecraft himself actually made a happy ending in one of his stories... which I seriously doubt since he hated humanity.

Another movie in my top 5. Saw it with my old man when I was like 6 years old. Didn't see it again until they made The Thing video game for the XBox and Sci-Fi ran the entire movie without any commercials because Microsoft paid for the advertising of the game. I couldn't believe how well those special effects held up after all those years. Practical Effects done right are amazing. I mean, go back and look at The Matrix now and those at-the-time mind-blowing special effects seem almost laughable today, don't they?

Blonde bob, stringy like a mop. Cat-like, curled up in the corner of the coffee shop draped in a broad grey scarf. The $300 Screen Safe™ coating on her horn-rimmed glasses bounces an indigo sheen off her brand new Macbook Pro. She looks weathered, but she always has. Even in college she looked this way. Popular. In control. But always aloof. Never totally there—like an adult playing at youth. Now, two decades later, her features relax in a perma-pout. She blinks vacantly at a screen full of faces. She clicks off mute.

“That sounds disturbing,” she says, pointedly. “We need more research.”

This woman is now in charge of what we used to call Hollywood. And it is through her eyes that we view on-screen sex.

I’ve heard that Jacob Elordi is unhappy with the underwhelming size of this penile prosthetic on the set of Euphoria. He reportedly throws fits about it.

Now that Hollywood has placed itself in charge of ensuring that the universal scales tip towards justice, every on-screen boob must be balanced with an on-screen dick. So penile prostheses have become another closed set standby alongside intimacy coordinators (who make sure no one feels “unsafe”) and modesty pouches (AKA cock socks).

Most of the fake dicks are made by one guy in the Valley, although their size and shape is determined by the makeup designer. On Euphoria, the same woman, Donni Davi, determines the length of both the eyelashes and the schlongs.

I don't know if I am enjoying it, some of it might be too miserable, bleak, dystopia, grim, dark and warlike to enjoy
yet it often says something

but I feel certain things in Warhammer might be Low Budget, especially fan made clips

What I respect is the huge work load of material, art and writing and There is A LOT of material in War Hammer

I knew it had stories, I knew about models, was video games, I heard maybe of a movie or cartoon and knew it had more than a single board game but I did not realize how big the Universe of Warhammer 40,000 was and A lot of Game Monster Fantasy Space stories seem to have ripped off Warhanmmer, many have been 'inspired'...you have games and products like Halo, Starcraft, Warcraft the game that South Park mocked, Prodeus, Sins of a Solar Empire, Resistance 3, Red Faction, Splitgate, Titanfall 2, StarFront, Destiny 2, Crysis Trilogy even Gears Of War Series and even Fallout ...they have borrowed or been inspired by Warhammer elements.
While that said Warhammer 40 K not totally unique, it is Dungeons and dragons stuff but adding space elements, it does take from Robert Heinlein 'Starship Troopers' and the Tolkien LOTR books.

When Warhammer refused to allow people to make their board game into a video game story, the companies basically copied the universe changed a few details and made it their own video game company, in fact originally they were suppose to be Warhammer games.

The model miniature statues are impressive they are very well done mold, printed, painted and sculpted, sold and mass porudced and then collectors come along and add their own paint or even build a landscape like you see in train set models or role play gaming or old practical maquette when people used to build these aerial shots using tony practical models of a town or city, Warhammer people often design their own post-Apocalpse landscape, its a whole culture and get together painting, modify and convention where they share they culture just as StarWars or Marvel or DC or StarTrek have their fans, Warhammer also has its huge fan following.

There are also a lot of written stories and fan made short movies and audio books, some of the stories are very funny, 'Ciaphas Cain' a douchebag leader but he comes with his own comedy, manages to survive. The Ork or Orc are the monster space thug but might have spoken queens-english,they have this weird mix of 'Soccer Hooligan' or old English brute sound, some local accents Geordie Cockney Easted Cockney-ish Birmingham Ozzy Osbourne is known for his Brummie accent, the Ork have a lot of these accents mixed into this very basic gangster form of dumb warrior urban English, I would call it 'Football Hooligan' accent more than anything because it seems to mix regions within English into one Neo-Fantasy-Old-English thug voice.
As ugly and wicked and dark as warhammer can be with its wormhole warps and demon inside some class of cosmic entity, it does have stories that can have more ordinary fun human elements to them, stories of irony.

Unlike real life its a 'game' its escapism, there is no true 'War' in Warhammer, it might have commented on religion extremism, or Warlords, Galaxy Spanning Governments and Imperialism and Space Monsters and it covers War Mongering and Religiously Pure but its just an escapist story.

It can be very grim and bleak but there are some funny moments within the Universe.

People are so into Warhammer material they will even modify other Games to add software and skin and gun and scenario location to change a game to be more Warhammer-ish

In 1977, David Lynch’s surreal horror movie, Eraser Head, budgeted at $10,000, was released. In a desolate, industrialized metropolis, the movie follows Henry Spencer as he tries to raise his disfigured child. The picture, which was shot in black and white, has become a cult favorite in the horror genre, earning a profit of $7,000,000, due to its eerie visuals and sound effects. Eraser head has influenced generations of filmmakers with its distinctive vision and style. It is a strong investigation of issues like identity, motherhood, and the human condition.

4. Deep Throat (1972)

Profit: $22,528,467

Budget: $25,000

Deep Throat is a 1972 pornographic film, directed by Gerard Damiano and starring Linda Lovelace. Due to its explicit sexual material, the movie caused controversy. It later became a cultural phenomenon and generated a discussion about censorship and obscenity laws across the country. The film also had a significant impact on the feminist movement, since Lovelace started speaking out against her involvement in the movie and became an outspoken critic of the pornographic industry. Deep Throat is still an important movie in the history of pornography and popular culture, despite its contentious past.

3. The Blair Witch Project (1999)

Profit: $248,600,000

Budget: $60,000

The Blair Witch Project is a 1999 horror film, directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez. The film follows a group of documentary filmmakers who become lost in the woods while investigating a local legend about a witch. The movie’s found footage style, improvised acting, and marketing campaign which presented it as a true story, contributed to its massive commercial success and critical acclaim, leading it to earn a profit of $248,600,000. The movie, which was directed by Jonathan Caouette, takes a frank and uncompromising look at the difficulties associated with family, mental health, and identity.

Aside from home movies and other archival material, the whole movie is made up of footage that Caouette himself recorded over 19 years. The film continues to be a milestone of American independent cinema, with a grossing of $1,200,00, and has received widespread praise for its creative approach to documentary storytelling.

1. Paranormal Activity (2007)

Profit: $193,400,000

Budget: $15,000

The horror movie Paranormal Activity was produced and helmed by Oren Peli in 2007. The movie centers on Katie and Micah, a young couple who live in a house that is cursed by an evil spirit. A terrifying atmosphere was produced by the movie’s found video format, usage of night vision cameras, and minimalistic approach to scares, which had viewers on the edge of their seats. The movie’s low budget of $15,000 and grassroots marketing strategy contributed to its success at the box office, and its ensuing sequels earning a profit of $193,400,000.

I would have liked Screamers if they didn't give it the "Hollywood Ending Treatment".

It was based off of Philip K. Dick's AMAZING story Second Variety. I feel they did a good job for most of the movie based off of the low budget, but they screwed it all up and gave it a happy ending.

The end of Second Variety was DARK.

There was no budgetary reason for them to change this. It wouldn't have broken the bank to keep the story as it was written, nor would it have required some big special effects at the end. Just a simple conversation at the very end, and the realization from our hero how he just got tricked and about what he just unknowingly did to the people he was trying to save, and that there was no way for him to fix it as he was breathing his final breaths.

Long story short, Hollywood ALWAYS screwed up almost everything it touches. Even before they ruined everything that was once good with "The Message", they just changed things that shouldn't have ever been changed.

That Indiana Jones remake might also be defeated by Insidious The Red Door a Low-ish Budget supernatural horror film

a budget of $15-16 Million so it seems it has already broke even with its opening

Remake? It wasn't a remake.

Yeah. I posted about Insidious beating it in the Indy 5 thread:

Also, Bruce says that Insidious: The Red Door is going to take #1 this weekend.

His model has Sound of Freedom getting a 4th place showing, but he thinks it will take 3rd place behind Indy 5.

Though I'd love to see Sound of Freedom beat it this weekend, I will be happy seeing any movie take 1st place from Indy 5 this weekend, and hopefully into next week until Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One comes out early on the 12th. It would be hilarious watching an Indiana Jones movie with a $300 Million budget only have claim to 6 days at 1st place once the next Mission Impossible comes out.

He messed up Joy Ride. That took 5th place behind Elemental.

Good call in Insidious though. It almost made more last night than Indy 5, Sound of Freedom and Elemental combined.

I'm loving the fact that the $300 Million budget Indy 5 is going to go down in history as only being in 1st place in the theaters for 6 days total.

Those 4,600 theaters must have looked pretty empty last night.

Red Door fudged the numbers. They take credit for $5M of preview sales (likely midnight Thursday) on Thursday, but then also include those same $5M again on Friday - double counting. Red Door made about $10M on both Friday and Saturday.

Do you have proof of this? I don't see anything on The Numbers mentioning it, and if Bruce is adding $5M to Friday and double counting, that's the first I've ever seen him do so. Either that, or he always counts the preview numbers in the first Friday's numbers for every movie that comes out on a Friday and SoF just didn't have a benefit of having a "preview Monday" because they decided to release it on a Tuesday instead of a Friday. And if that's the case, it's not shady accounting... it's just how the accounting is always done, which in this unique case is a shame.

If that is how Bruce calculates Opening Friday, I'd like to know that with something showing that it is the case. It will be something I'd never considered and wasn't aware of before.

It definitely would explain why he never counts Thursday Preview money in with the total money earned. I always wondered why preview money wasn't counted in the Domestic Box Office totals.

Alright. I said "Double counted" and maybe that was imprecise.
I meant that they counted the same money on Thursday that they also counted again on Friday, but they didn't add the Thursday onto the total twice. Hope that makes sense.
On Thursday, The Numbers wants to give it headlines for the dollars for the Midnight showings. The midnight showings are technically Friday showings, because the films are embargoed until the Friday dates. That is exactly the reason for having Midnight Showings for opening shows. When the show time is 12:01 AM, then the dollars are likely handed to the Box Office on Thursday, before midnight.
On Friday, The Numbers only shows $15M for Friday, with a grand total of $15M. Which means the $5M posted as Thursday was just rolled into Friday's figure, and actual Friday only had $10M - about the same as on Saturday.
I saw no rationalizations written on the site about it, but the NUMBERS don't lie, just The Numbers - haha.

Hope that explains. I was not trying to be obtuse or deceptive. I had thought you already knew this from the posted data. You seem to follow the site a while, I haven't much.

No... I'm glad you brought this up. Like I said, I always wondered why preview numbers were never counted in the total numbers before, and I also noticed that about 99 times out of 100 that Friday's numbers for a brand new movie are almost always higher than Saturday's numbers, which also didn't make sense to me since most folk work all day on Friday.

Just writing that reply to you last night I think I kind of worked out in my head what was going on. I just never did before because although I remember finding both of those things odd, I never really put any serious thought into them before.

I still would like to see it stated somewhere that this is what is going on for sure, but even without having that in writing somewhere I can't think of any other plausible way to explain it.

So yeah... Another good point you bring up there. But nothing really can be done about it since a Tuesday release doesn't get Monday night previews.

Alien Raiders (2008). Direct to DVD.
Production Budget: $5 Million
Run Time: 85 minutes

Good, but not great...

I won't give any spoilers on this in case anybody wants to see it. I'd never even heard of this until I recently saw a video review that likened it to The Thing, which is in my top 5 movies of all time. I'd add that it also has vibes of The Mist, since the entire movie is filmed in a grocery store (which I've mentioned before is another genre that I love, when an entire movie is filmed in one place).

The acting on this one is pretty good by most of the main characters, and that's probably where most of the budget went. None of the people in it are household names, but even a guy like me who doesn't watch much these days recognized quite a few of them, though I couldn't place any of them until I looked it up on IMDB after it was done. You've actors who had roles in TV shows like Castle, Six Feet Under, Dexter, Chuck & Sons of Anarchy.

Because of the whole The Thing-esque concept, they're able to do most of the movie just filming people, but the little amount of practical effects that were used in the movie look really good... Probably partially due to the lights being turned out earlier on in the movie, which was a plot device I think was just thrown in there to make the effect scenes look better than they actually were.

About 30-40 minutes in and I was REALLY enjoying this and thought I had uncovered a hidden gem of a flick I was going to recommend my brother and dad watch, but I feel that it fumbled by the 3rd act, when it seemed that characters were making dumb decisions leading up to an ending that I suspected was going to happen about halfway to 1 hour into it.

It wasn't a funny movie at all, but the handcuff scene made me laugh out loud.

Overall, I'd give it a positive rating. Especially with the micro-budget. Not something I'd recommend to mainstream audiences. Also not a "so bad it's good" movie since it wasn't actually bad. I'd recommend this one to B-Movie Horror/Sci-Fi enthusiasts and people who grew up watching whatever schlock skipped the theaters and went straight to the cable channels on weekend nights with their friends at sleepovers in the 80's and 90s.

6.5/10
