J Michael Straczynski wants to do a new Star Trek series with Bryce Zabel. He is calling for all fans to write to Paramount saying that Trek isn't dead, it just needs interesting stories and good writing. If you want to read the entire article, you can find it at http://www.craveonline.com/scifi/stories.php?sid=1237 .

For those that are unaware of who JMS is, he is the creator of Babylon 5, which I highly recommend to anyone who isn't already familiar with it. If anyone could do it right, it's Straczynski.

Before everyone gets too excited about this, this was on SciFi Wire yesterday.

Straczynski Ends Trek Campaign

A day after calling for a letter-writing campaign by fans who wanted to see his version of Star Trek produced, Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski posted a follow-up message to the same newsgroup retracting his statement. "Belay everything I just said," Straczynski wrote. "In the 24 hours between the time I composed the prior note, and sent it, and it made its way through the moderation software, two things happened."

The two things that changed Straczynski's mind were a tip from a trusted source at Paramount, which owns the rights to the Star Trek franchise, that the studio is "giving the Trek TV world a rest" for a year or two, and an offer to run a series premiering in the fall of 2006, which Straczynski has accepted. In Straczynski's words, the Trek campaign is now "kind of moot."

The writer/producer apologized to fans and assured them that he hasn't abandoned the project completely. "We can reconvene a year or two down the road to see where this takes us," he said. "But in the interim ... my apologies for waking everybody up in the middle of the night."

It would have been great. Hopefully we'll still get to see it sometime.

Packer fans welcome.

Thanks for the update. Bummer though, but maybe eventually something will come of it.

"JMS wants to revive Stark Trek"

Stark Trek? I like it. The show could use some darkness & grit.

Honestly, I'm not being a jerk about the typo. It brings up an image I like. :)

Agreed; the first thing I thought of was everybody's favourite Farscape nutcase.

Like, a series following Stark as he wanders aimlessly around the Trekverse (probably wondering how the frell he ended up here).

And with JMS in charge, he'd hopefully end up hooking up with a similarly displaced Zathras. . .

Except that Tim Choate died last year, and nobody else could be Zathras but him. Although, I suppose it could be one of the other brothers. ("Slight variation in how you pronounce.")
