I'll wait till Wednesday for the Final national ratings before posting a news item on the matter, but here is the rating rankings from the Futon Critic for Friday.

Because of the baseball playoffs, Firefly's adjusted score will likely come out to a 4.2/7, which is rather good considering NY and LA were both not included due to pre-emption.

It's rather disturbing that America's Funniest Home Videos nudged by Firefly. A while back, we looked at what Firefly's possible competitions were and came to the premature conclusion (at least I did) that Firefly didn't have much competition from the other networks.

Having the best of Firefly up against other network shows--and losing--does not bode well for the series if FOX is short-sighted with its expectations. I seriously hope FOX takes a long-term view and extend the current 13 committed episodes to a full season to give Firefly a chance to build and nurture an audience.

Having said that, here is the ranking list:

1. "Law & Order: S.V.U." (NBC) - 11.6/19
2. "Hack" (CBS) - 8.6/14
3. "Providence" (NBC) - 7.9/13
4. "48 Hours Investigates" (CBS) - 7.4/12
5. "Dateline NBC" (NBC) - 6.8/10
6. "20/20" (ABC) - 6.0/10
7. "Robbery Homicide Division" (CBS) - 5.6/9
8. "America's Funniest Home Videos" (ABC) - 5.4/9
9. "John Doe/MLB Playoffs" (FOX) - 5.3/9
10. "Firefly/MLB Playoffs" (FOX) - 5.1/8

disturbed? but are you surprised? I was surprised that AFHV, being the L.C.D. that it is, wasn't even higher on the list. It surprising what most American's will allow themselves to be turned into complete morons like that.

Okay, then you will have to figure out if Fox has a solid show that they know will get them steady but mediocre ratings or something like Firefly that they still aren't quite sure but probably keep sliding. Some surefire backup in their collective back pocket for midseason replacement. Or are they (the scheduling execs) just morons and will keep swapping without any type of risk benefit analysis (oh, mama paid for that stupid MBA knowing you won't use anything you should have learned from it - you stupid bastards). Keep swapping and swapping randomly until they hit the jackpot. Does it feel like these idiots running the shows use no better techniques than the 1st tier line techs you run into at every callcenter?

I have a feeling that Firefly wont get cancelled. I mean, did Dark Angel even get much better than Firefly in ratings?

Not so far.

Then again, it didn't do well enough to stay on the air....

Actually "Dark Angel" did considerably better here (Fridays at 8 p.m. eastern) than "Firefly" has:

"Firefly"
Week 1: 6.2 million viewers
Week 2: 5.5 million viewers
Week 3: 4.9 million viewers

"Dark Angel"
Week 1: 7.4 million viewers
Week 2: 6.6 million viewers
Week 3: 7.6 million viewers

From what I heard Dark Angel was one hugely expensive show. They apparently converted an abandoned steel works into a 2020 Seattle street and then spent even more cash moving it piece by piece to another location in season 2.

Firefly is probably a lot cheaper , especially if there are more "ship in a bottle" episodes ala "Our Mrs Reynolds".

It's also worth noting that Dark Angel ratings after the first 3 or 4 eps of season 2 dropped dramatically often less than 4/8.

I'm sure Fox expected this. They can't expect a rather obscure show like Firefly to garner huge ratings overnight especially when they put it on a friday night.
