DOUBLESHINY

“C-3P0? He’s such a weenie!” grins Alan Tudyk, before pitching into his best camp-robot accent : “Oh my Gaaaad, let’s not do this! This is terrible, let’s run away…Oh my Gaaad!”

Welcome, if you can bear it, to the scattergun-gobbed world of Tudyk. Having made a name for himself in small-but-perfectly-formed gigs in Wonder Boys and A Knight’s Tale,it looks like 2004 is shaping up as a big year for the 33-year old Texan, having blagged the part of Sonny, the droid accused of murder in Will Smith actioner I,Robot. While assuring us he’s ‘no weenie’, smashing through walls at superhuman speed, Tudyk pulled off what’s now commonly referred to as a ‘Gollum’, supplying both voice and movement for the CG character. Tough to adjust then? “Only cos I was wearing a leotard!” explodes Tudyk. “You know, Bridget Monaghan’s hanging out and your boys are front and centre…”

Make no mistake, Tudyk’s a bit of a wag – which makes it all the more strange to learn that at school, he was set on becoming, er, a hotel manager. “If you’re an actor, you don’t have any money and I wanted to have a wife and children. Now I’m an actor with money but I still don’t have a wife and children!”

Having played opposite Hollywood funnyman Smith, Tudyk will also be seen riffing off Ben Stiller in sports-com Dodgeball. Must have been a gas with the both of them, then. “They’re two very different guys,” says Tudyk. “Ben’s very professional on set, very funny when he’s acting. He’ll go outside the lines a lot but maintain the integrity of the scene. Whereas Will plays characters a lot. You’ll walk up to him and say ‘Hey Will’ and he’ll go ‘Yaah, wassup?!’ and pull some crazy character out of nowhere. He’s a blast”

Get Tudyk on the subject of acting in Hollywood blockbusters and the light tone suddenly shifts. “It’s always just play yourself, mumble you lines and have some big explosion behind you,” he laments. “There aren’t too many new actors like Alan Arkin or Gene Hackman who exist on their own frequency, do things in a way that nobody else could get away with. Those are the people who are inspirational to me.”

So look out for Tudyk. You can’t miss him. He’s played a medieval squire. A killer robot. And a mental ballplayer. What next? Well, he’s currently shooting Joss Whedon’s big-screen sci-fi spin-off Serenity, in which he plays pilot Wash. But before that comes crime-thriller RX – Sin Receta. His character? A gay drug dealer named Pepe. Obviously. “He’s a monster when you piss him off and he’ll cut your heart out,” says Tudyk darkly, before grinning. “Oh my God, it was fun!”
