Everybody Dies Alone.

Okay so this may be a question that's been answered but at least for me I haven't found any info on it. I didn't get a chance to ask Jewel Staite when I met her but I get the feeling Nathan would be the person to ask however maybe someone here knows. So what I was curious about is what is the history of Mal's coat? I always assumed it was his browncoat from when he served during the war but in the segments we get of him fighting (Battle of Serenity Valley and Dhu Khang) the coats he's wearing seem way more of a khaki color to me. The one seen in "The Message" also has buttons and has a material similar to a cardigan but as an overcoat. There is a huge burn mark on the coat's left shoulder which is where an Independent's patch would be so i'm wondering if he burned it off but the color is still much darker than the ones seen during the battle sequences. My theory has always been that it was the coat he'd worn during the Battle of Serenity Valley and after years of roughing it with Zoe through the galaxy it got damaged so he heavily modified it. The buttons after years had long fallen off so he modified the coat with the clamps we see and also burned off the Independent's patch. He has repaired the coat in the show (you can see stitches where Patience shot him in the pilot) so it wouldn't surprise me if it was his original military issue. The coat wouldn't be the first thing he's ever modified, his Moses has been heavily modified multiple times including during the comics (In Better Days he extended the loaders so that they jot out by the barrel of the gun, also in the film the magazine clip is different) I'm just curious as to what you guys all think and if you have any theories regarding his coat.

Now I have a new reason to watch the series again. I think I'll view the BR version.

What Would Mal do ?

yep..right there with you on your thinking on clothes simply wearing out, or getting damaged.
what puzzled me even more...in the epi "out of gas" despite it being freezing cold on the ship, he's walking around without his coat and covers with the blanket from the locker..maybe I missed a part where it was damaged by the fire blast?...just seemed like of all times, when you're about to go sub-zero..is maybe when you put on the brown coat ? (grin)

but the real backstory on the brown coat is that it was stitched togeter by wardrobe from the seat cover of a 1968 chevy Impalla...the end

JEAN

Dry cool info about the coat being stitched from car seat covers. That sounds like something Mel would do. Maybe Zoe helped.
