Watched Safe, again, and caught something I had missed all the previous times. When River is all caught up in the music and dancing away, back by the ship there's a gun fight in progress. As the fight concludes, Mal turns and sees Book , lying on the ground, shot. Just then, the scene cuts to River who almost doubles over in shock and anguish. The impact of something gone really wrong seems to be affecting her. However, I found it interesting that we don't see this reaction from River 'till Mal actually sees Book shot, and not when Book IS shot - if you get my meanin.

Just somethin I noticed.

Thought on that myself a few times. Also I believe in that episode River says something about "father" coming to get them (her and Simon). At the end of OIS there is a definately change in relationship between Mal and Riv.

It has been suggested elsewhere that what River picks up is the suppression of emotion, rather than the emotion itself. This ties in with the amygdala manipulation as well as the quoted 'readings'.

Huh.... now there's an angle I hadn't thought of before...

With Mal being one of the most repressed souls on the ship, especially as he was originally conceived (Book and Inara have secrets too, but still seem to have their personalities intact), that theory actually has some heft to it.

Food for thought....

I believe River is "connected" to all of the crew not just Mal

My initial response to that notion was.. " why didn't she pick up on Book being shot, first, and not Mal's reaction to it ?", THEN I got an idea. Maybe Book didn't KNOW he was shot till he saw Mal's reaction. Many times, when folks are in accidents and such, it happens so fast, they don't register it right away. However, Mal sees that Book has been shot, and instantly thinks, " Wow, Book's been shot! ".

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

Or Book is thinking "Fuck me, I've been shot!" with no suppression, whereas Mal is pushing back the emotion to formulate a plan of action.
