America loves a winner!

Per "Serenity" , word is that filming starts in June. I know this won't be any Lord of the Rings venture, but how long can we expect shooting to last ? And then after filming is done, how long does post- production last ?

I know the release date is in 2005, but I'm just trying to get a general idea how long this movie making stuff lasts.

Ok, so I'm bored on Friday night, sue me.

They don't like it when you shoot at 'em.

I'm guessing a couple of months for the actual shooting, a couple more for CGI, then maybe 1 or 2 more for post production.

Then again, I have no earthly idea. What do I know about the movie makin' business? I know how to hand over my $8.25, that's about it.

Post production (editing etc...) is usually the longest. So I would give them a good 4 months for that at least.

What I've read over and over about average scheduals for hollywood films to reach completion that includes special effects work is six to nine months.

And I don't know if that time includes showing various edits of the film to test audiences. You see in Hollywood long before any film comes out it's tested on test audiences. And after they grill these audience members for everthing they think of the film the finial edit or "cut" of the film is made based on thier reactions. Kind of sad but true that's Hollywood.

Certain directors have the power to by-pass this and can make any cut they like, say for example Martin Scorsese. Or a guy like David Lynch who will not make a movie unless it's written into his contract that he gets to aprove the final cut. Wich by the way is a part of the reason it's so many years between Lynch films. Even though everthing he makes, turns a profit Hollywood only likes to give money if they have the finial say.

The truth is good art isn't made by democracy it's made by an artist. As much love for democracy I have in politics it's crap when it comes to art. Good art is made by the dictatorship of an artist. I just hope Joss had enough power to have at least some control over the final cut. And fear not even if he has no control he's brilliant and test audiences can only screw up his vision so much.

Sorry that was kind of a downer but yes that's how it works.

On the upside Joss has Toy Story and other profitable movies to his name so I'm sure he has some control although maybe not all.

Oh, I'm just going to add one last thing then I'll shut up I promise. You'll notice how much time Joss spent on the DVD features bitching about how he would have like to have done things in other ways. Well it still turned out great and the film will likely be the same.

I don't think we'll see "Serenity" released until at least June 2005. July would be a better guess, especially around July 4 domestically.

They can have my "Firefly" DVDs when they pry them from my cold, dead fingers....

Thanks for the answers and for taking time out to respond. Like many here, I'm just glad there's something Firefly related to look forward to. Watchin the DVD's is great, but it ticks me off too because they were so excellent and it was cancelled so gorram prematurely.

I'm just glad there are folks out there who agree - Firefly is worthy of flying again, and this make me proud. We are just to pretty to die.

A movie script is usually about 120 pages... if they can shoot a page of script a day that would be about 4 months of shooting, but that would be for a typical major production... if they go for more of a made-for-tv production timeframe then it could be shorter... 2-3 months of shooting. Depends on locations and sets and schedules. How many takes they need, how much can second unit shoot, how many fx shots are there. If thgey push it they could have it done by spring 2005 or earlier...

Honestly can't see Serenity as one of Universal's tentpole movies - I'd guess beginning or end of summer, or even September (one way to make the film cheaper is not to have to rush the effects - much like Spiderman/LOTR were still working on things up to the week before release in some cases).

Can't recall all the big films due out next Summer, apart from of course Star Wars, and Batman Begins, but there will no doubt be at least one Marvel film (I had the full list somewhere) as well. Is King Kong 2005 or 6? And might Haryy Potter be in there as well?

March or April, hopefully. Releasing in May would be suicide - Star Wars may be bounding downhill but everyone will go to see it anyway.

If not then then August looks good, even if everyone will be burnt out on blockbusters by then.

Don't shoot me, but... it might actually be interesting to see it released in May, preferably a week or two before Star Wars. I'd love to see the comparison reviews that I think would be inevitable - and Firefly may benefit quite a bit by being called things like 'the new Star Wars' or being listed as much better than episode III (I have no doubts whatsoever that it will be.)

While it would benefit from those things, sure, it'd be far more smothered under the massive Lucas hype machine. You've gotta know the drill - the TV marketing campaign will start 4 weeks in advance at least, and it's going to flood the airways once they get within two weeks of release. An ad for Serenity would be lost and well beyond forgotten in that mess. A comparison review might help Firefly a little, not having all it's potential fans sucked in and tuned out by the biggest competing movie of the year would help it a lot more.

Wow, that's actually a weak line up so far - I've cut the wheat from the chaff - the obvious tentpole movies (I've made a judgment call on XXX2, so shoot me) only. August/September strikes me as the right period - Trek movies used to go around about then (no way anyone is messing with Bond, or KK).

Agreed. Remember how The Two Towers effectively killed Star Trek Nemesis (and with it, possibly the movie franchise itself)?

(For those not paying attention, Nemesis was released the week before TTT. Nobody went to see it, and thus, one of the best Trek movies ever gained the lowest opening gross ever, and was hailed as a total failure ['cause, of course, it couldn't possibly be that people were saving their money to see the most anticipated movie of that year].)

Paramount isn't near as bad as Fox, but they were close with that one.

Meant the rest of the line up - but May would be commercial suicide. If it does well, it gets squeezed out of the cinemas on May 25th and never returns. April would be an option, but I'll stick my neck out and say that's too early - I'd guess towards the end of Summer/early Autumn/Fall whatever.
