Hi everybody. New to the Firefly universe here, so forgive me if this has been discussed before: I love the theme song. IMHO, one of the best TV theme songs ever. In fact, a most excellent song standing on it's own merits, aside from the series. That being said, (and not to diminish its excellence in any way,) it reminds me of another piece of music. Something about the opening chords, the overall rhythm and instrumentation, and even the vocals. I just cannot put my finger on it, and it's driving me nuts! Does anybody out there have any idea what I'm talking about? Help!

Also wanted to say I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get around to Firefly. Life and career and all that. But I'm catching up with the DVDs right now. I haven't even finished all the original episodes or the movie yet, and I'm already disappointed this wonderful show has such a limited library of material. Another example of lights that burn so very brightly, not burning long.

Lastly, if she happens to be reading this... With all due respect to your substantial talent, craft and professionalism, I just need to say that also: Mrs. Fishburne, in my book you're a hottie! Keep up the good work!

Pop music? Classical? Country?
I like Western Music, and it does remind me of some Chris LeDoux tunes, raw vocals like "Seventeen" and similar instrumentation, as in Long-haired Outlaw, but not so much asian influence. But I didn't really "equate" them, so you likely mean something else.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not that familiar with LeDoux, tho' I have heard some of his stuff I'm sure. It's funny that you mention a song "Long Haired Outlaw," because I've been wondering if it was the group, Outlaws, that was wandering around the back of my mind.

Actually as I sat down to write this, it finally clicked that I may be thinking of "Ghost Riders in the Sky." I've been dwelling on that for a week now! I'm still not sure that's exactly what I was thinking of, but it's pretty darn close.

Ok - just listened to Ghost Riders. Definitely on the right track, but I just don't think that's the one that's teasing me. Checked out The Doors', "Rider on the Storm," too. So close, but not it. Maybe if those two songs had a baby. I know there's a song somewhere in my distant past that just hiding in my subconcious. Arrgh!

House of the Rising Sun? Ok. I'll stop boring everybody with this. I can go nuts without boring you all, too!

But any suggestions will be faithfully listened to!

Could it be "Take Me Out To The Ballgame"?

Take me out to the ball game
Take me out to the crowd
Buy me some peanuts and crackerjack
I don't care if I ever come back

----------------------------------

Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me.

Refining my reply, I think mostly of the lack of "polish" is what I like about these tunes. I enjoy the raw vocals used, and tooooo many recording artists have waay too much "treatment" and get too "polished" or overproduced.

Ghost Riders, Riders on the Storm and Rising Sun all sound too polished to me.

I'm getting an inkling of Charlie Daniels Band or Billy Ray Cyrus in my head while recalling the theme. BRC's "Some Gave All" seems similar to me, but not quite it. Joe Diffie had "Ships that don't come in" but that might not quite be it either. I think Aaron Tippin had some ballads that might sound close.
