In one of Mal's flashback scenes to when the crew were in the kitchen eating supper and Book was telling his story, Jayne made some type of motion with his hands on either side of his face. Was his motions the sign of quotations, or maybe the motion of twirling a mustache giving a clue as to what looked so natty? I just caught that and was wondering.

I'm curious about that too. I think it was air-quotes but it's clearly a ref. to part of the story we didn't see. I wonder if an entire story was actually written or if it was only the tail end to set the mood of the moment (I suspect the latter).

I would say this is a good question for a convention, but who could remember clearly what went on then?

The back-story wasnt written, Tim Minear said in the commentary :)
And I reckon the action looked more like quotation marks than twirls, but I guess we may never know for sure..

Thanks for the answer on the lack of back-story, I didn't remember that comment. Which now means I have to go back and watch the whole series w/ commentary (once again) to see what else I missed or have forgotten. Curse you, elPagan! :)

I wathce dit again. Book 3was relating the story of a brother who was so proud, seemed like a visible thing. When Book waved it off for Wash, seemed to me like Jayne was imitatng whatever imagery Book had talked about.
