Ballad of Serenity (duh)
Reaver Theme (it's awesome)
Hero of Canton
Out of Gas - music that plays at beginning when ship is empty (beautiful)
The Message song at end (same)

If any of these key tracks are missing, I'll be sad.

As for the rest, well.. I'll still be sad, but they gotta at least have these ones!

Those are great tunes. What about music that sort of reminds you of the show? I have a friend that insists ACDC's "Back in Black" would have been a great song for the show to use (had it of course not been cancelled). I don't really agree with him, though. For sure I put at least one track from the GATTACA soundtrack on there because Whedon used it to help him right OIS.

KAI

Here's how I might do things. Now, one has to keep in mind that a single CD isn't going to be able to contain 15-some episodes worth of original soundtrack, but at the same time a lot of the music we heard was delivered in fairly small pieces. So I'm not really sure how many different tracks we could get on one disc. Maybe a little, maybe a lot. Who knows. So, for my purposes, I'll say 18-19 tracks of indeterminate length.

Here are my picks (and for the record, most of the names I assign these tracks are made up off the top of my head. I don't know what these pieces are really called.):

Ballad of Serenity (Duh.)

Duck Hunting (Played during the scene with the UA-571 Ground Sentry. Yeah!)

Crisis of Faith (Played during the carpet bombing of Serenity Valley. A crowd favorite.)

The Great Alliance (Played during “Serenity”, when we first see the I.A.V. Dortmunder. Very anthem-ish.)

We Win (Played TWICE, actually. Once during “Serenity”, where it starts off during Serenity’s escape from the I.A.V. Dortmunder, and once during The Train Job, where it starts with Wash’s grand entrance.)

Madness and Savagery (Played several times in association with the Reavers. Yum.)

Springtime Dance (Played during the outdoor festival scene in “Safe”.)

Black Tie Affair (The dance music played during Shindig. I can’t tell if this is an actual classical piece or not, and if it is then in probably shouldn’t be included. But if it ISN’T…)

Adrift (Played all throughout “Objects in Space”. You hear it at the beginning, you hear it at the end.)

Brain Scan (Played during Ariel in the neuroimaging suite. A somewhat subdued, ambient piece.)

Unpleasant Reputation (Played during “War Stories” as focus shifts over to Niska’s Skyplex.)

Leave No Man Behind/Struggle (Played during “War Stories”, pretty much starting with the big fight and ending after the big fight. Part of this is the menu music for the DVD set.)

Balancing Act/Breaking and Entering (Played during “Trash”. A combination of two distinct pieces intermixed with one another, it starts with Wash discussing the estate’s security, cuts back and forth between Mal/Saffron and the crew on-board Serenity, then finally ends with Saffron’s “reunion” with her husband. One of my personal favorites.)

Good Day (Played at the end of “Trash”, starting up when we come back to Mal sitting naked in the middle of nowhere. Another one of my personal favorites.)

Eulogy (Played at several moments throughout “The Message”, most notably at the end.)

Bounty Hunter (Played during “Objects in Space”. Jubal Early’s theme.)

Togetherness (Played during “Objects in Space”, except at the end this time.)

Still Flyin’ (Going all the way back to the beginning, this one is played at the very end of “Serenity”.)

SECRET BONUS TRACK: The Hero of Canton, sung by all nine main cast members. Somewhat off-key.

CANTTAKESKY

Kai, that is an amazing list. For me, these are the must-haves:

1. The funeral at the end of The Message.
2. Everything in Out of Gas
3. Reavers' themes
4. Alliance themes
5. Simon and River piano themes. For example, when Simon first explained what was going on with River in the Kitchen (the "top 3 percent" talk).
6. Jubal Early and just about everything on Objects in Space
7. Music associated with Inara
8. River's dance in Safe
9. Saffron's dance in Our Mrs. Reynolds
10. Ballroom dance in Shindig
11. Niska's themes
12. Everything in Heart of Gold
13. Ballad of Serenity
14. Hero of Canton
15. This amazing Chinese music playing in the background on Persephone in the pilot.

I don't know how this can squeeze onto one CD, but maybe the good news with the iTunes route is they won't limit the amount of music they will make available.

That comment on the DVD made me go and re-listen to Gattaca, and I had forgotten quite how good it is.

That is exactly the score music I'd pick! I would add the background music in "Serenity" when we see Inara bathe. By the way, anybody knows where I can find Jubel Early's theme in "Objects in Space"?

TEELABROWN

I like all the music, but from what I've seen, I have two comments.

I once watched Bushwacked for the Reaver theme. I think it rocks.

And I watch River's dance in Safe a lot. I love the music, and I'm going to learn the dance.

The full version of the music from the DVD-set, the tune that plays in the intro before you get to see the menu. I believe it's from "War Stories". What a catchy little tune. :)

I really like the...I'm not really sure you could call it a song...the 'chords' that are played at the very end of OiS. If it is part of some larger song - or hell, even if it's not - gotta have that.
