"Out of bed," river said quietly and John followed her toward the common area. Ivy was nearby, River knew. "Ivy we need to talk to you" she said playing the kind crew member. John hoped she would come out. He knew her secret and needed to make sure it was under control, he couldn't risk having a loose cannon aboard.

CATE

Figuring that all was safe, Cate made her way back to the galley, feeling it wasn't polite to drink in the room where she was staying.

She sat back in her spot and waited to see if anybody would turn up again.

Ivy was hiding behind the couch in the common area when she heard a soft female voice call out to her.

Ivy saw them come into view. It was John and a girl. John looked wary, but the girl seemed so calm and non-threatening. Ivy shakily stood up. The woman turned to her and stepped forward towards her with her hands held out in front of her, not wanting to spook her. Ivy stepped back, pressing herself against the wall. River stopped.

“Please don’t hurt me,” Ivy pleaded with a small voice.

A barrage of emotions washed over both River and John: intense fear, horror, grief and guilt. It was so strong that John had to take a small step backwards. River also saw glimpses of her past. She softened with sympathy.

“We’re not going to hurt you. Neither of you,” River said reassuringly.

Ivy stood taller and stepped towards them, fists clenched and her eyes took on a different look. A whole new set of emotions invaded the room: protectiveness, fierce loyalty and a touch of anger. This is the person John felt earlier.

“How do I know you won’t hurt her.”

John leaned forward and whispered into River’s ear.

“Tommy.”

River nodded slightly as she went back to talking.

“It’s not the type of people we are.”

“You chased her. With guns,” Tommy said with an edge in her voice. “And threatened to shoot her.”

“We chased you, not Ivy,” John interjected. “I didn’t understand before. I called them off once I knew.”

Tommy relaxed a bit, but still eyed them with suspicion.

“And how was it that you knew?”

John was thrilled to be making progress. As long as Tommy would behave, Ivy could stay.

"River and I are, for lack of better term, psychic. River reads; I feel. I know it's strange but it'sno stranger than having two personalities. i understand the entire situation now so you're welcome to stay but I just need to be sure that you can be trusted and that you trust us Tommy. Can we learn to trust each other?" John extended his hand. For Tommy, not for Ivy.

“Psychic?” Tommy asks suspiciously. John and River nod. “How do I know you won’t hurt her?”

“It’s not the type of people we are,” River repeated.

“But the guns. And you took her cortex link away. I’m not feeling the trust there.”

“I’ll get it back for you,” River said. “But it would be best not to use it. Makes the Captain a little jumpy.”

“A little?” John commented with a small smile. River glared at him.

“OK. I would feel better if she could have that back,” Tommy said. “Can I request a couple of things?”

“We won’t say anything to anyone about this unless one of you gets out of control,” River supplied, giving Tommy proof that she was what she said she was. John was feeling the anger fade from Tommy’s outlook.

“Just because we talked doesn’t mean that I am going to go away,” Tommy stated. “I always look out for her. I’ll be watching.”

“Fair enough,” John agreed.

“And stay out of her head," Tommy requested. "She doesn’t need anyone poking around up there. She’s been through enough.”

River cocked her head as she caught another couple of glimpses.

“I’ll try not to, but you both need to be less… noisy.”

Tommy actually smiled. Tentatively, she reached out and shook John’s hand.

“I’ll need something from you as well. For trust purposes,” River said. John felt Tommy tense up. “You need to keep that gun in your room. I don’t want to see it out unless it is absolutely necessary.”

John’s eyes widened in surprise as his gaze whipped around to River and then back to Tommy.

“A gun?”

Tommy sucked in a deep breath and thought for a second.

“OK. We’ll try that. But if someone gets out of hand, I’ll have to–“

“Come see one of us,” River interjected.

Tommy thought a little longer and then nodded.

“Ivy is exhausted. She needs to sleep,” Tommy told them.

River and John stepped aside and watched Tommy leave them. Tommy stopped at the couch, fished the gun out from between the cushions and went back to her bunk.

“She’ll be sleeping out here,” River said.

“In the common area? Why not her bunk?”

“No room for her there. Plants. She has strawberries. We should tell her that Kaylee likes them.”

“Her emotions were all over the place.”

“And very strong.”

“You catch anything else?” John asked her. River nodded sadly. “Was it bad?”

“Very,” River said softly as she decided she needed some alone time to digest what she saw. “I need to get up to the bridge.”

River left John standing in the common area.

*as the alliance battleship miracleworker drew in the little ship, Commander Horace Appleton became uneasy. the man onboard had identified himself as a known fugitive and there had been a small attachment file on his record that the commander would probably leave out of the public eye for now. it simply had a list of 7 names all presumed dead in the first war of independance. although that these people were apparently not quite so dead as they were presumed was rather alarming. not least that he now in fact had two of these such people aboard his ship. as usualin time of stress such as these the commanders hand reached almost reflexativly to the handle of the bottom left drawer of his desk. the smooth metal felt cold in his hand, but not as cold as the shiny glass bottle he removed.
Horace opened the bottle and allowed some of the dark amber liquid to slosh against the bottom of a tumbler. these were the moments he lived for these days, if you could call them day out here, the monotony of space was driving him mad. with a drink in one hand and a list of 7 profiles in the other, the Commander settled down to some deppression, just to break the routine.*

OoC: sorry if i havent been on, been doing school holiday stuff.
