In Out of Gas why didn't Serenity's artificial gravity get knocked out? Also the same question about the ship which was ransacked by the Reavers? I understand the cost of the special effects would have been insurmountable, but couldn't an easy explanation have sufficed?

What a perfect question for Christmas morning. I'll get back to you on that when Christmas is over.

Cargo ships are equiped with a gravity simulating substance at the lowest hull that exerts a pull- how great a pull depends on the amount used, but it's generally used to simulate Earth-norm for rhe sake of livestock and such. It needs no external power source to do this (Exotic Matter, I believe is it's name), hence it's effect felt even when ship's power is off. Note in the pilot when the grav was negated to bring cargo on board from space, then the negation field was de-activated, bringing the cargo from the deserted ship crashing down onto Serenity's deck...

Got one for everything Chrisisall

in Bushwhacked the surviving craft was not without power, and when then set foot aboard specifically stated the grav was still on. KayLee pointed out that nothing was wrong with the ship.

In OoG they still also had power for lights, medical equip, broadcasting beacon, etc. The eviron systems were just not fuctioning and therefore could not produce new oxygen, and most of the oxygen previously generated was eaten up by the fireball, or evacuated to space.
