The Operative and the Alliance troops went after folks it was known that Mal and his crew had contact with recnetly. Inara and Book were both tracked down. But what about anyone from before, say Badger, YoSaffBridge, or Patience at Whitefall?

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Well, YoSaffBridge was probably safe, since she isn't somebody that they would go to for shelter and not somebody whose death Mal was like to get choked up about. And I think maybe the key to their being absent was in Zoe's line "anybody who ever sheltered us after a heist." The Operative was looking for friends, not just business contacts who would not have helped Serenity anyway, and who, being threatened or harmed, would not be likely to draw Mal out. Hence, no Badger or Patience (or Niska, 'Verse only knows).

We aren't shown many of Serenity's friends in FF, but I have always thought it would have been nice if they could have shown us SOMEBODY we knew in that "look at all the dead people" montage, even if it was just the postal worker from The Message, or something like that (although to be fair, when they were makeing the BDM, that guy had never been seen on televion, since that episode was unaired). Until this very moment, I had always wondered why we didn't see Badger or Patience, too; it was only as I started writing this post that I thought of what Zoe said and the possibility that they wouldn't have been targets.

WHITESILENCE

Well they sorta did, one of the screens in the scene where Mal is talking over the Cortex with the Operative is labeled 'Whitefall'.

Wow...very interesting. I couldn't help but notice the dead person in the Whitefall feed was bleeding from the ears. Much like what happened to the guards in Ariel, when they were visited by the 'Hands of Blue' guys.

Curious indeed.

The question that has been missed is "How did the Operative know who to go after? and how so quickly?"

I think Inara squawked...

Given that it's a fair bet the Alliance, by the time of the movie, knew who was sheltering Simon and River, do you really think they didn't already have a fat dossier on Mal's contacts?

The Operative found out that it was him by the feed from the Maidenhead. He used that as a basis to track and find River.

Besides, I doubt Mal would be advertising his less than legal contacts.

The Hands of Blue/Independent contractors/Trouble shooters (depending on what you prefer to call them) knew a little more, and tried to use Badger in Those Left Behind to catch him. But they and their evidence turned into charcoal by the end of that Saga.

If the Operative knew who was hiding her, he would not have needed to go to the same length's as early. Just set a trap like he did with Inara without the need for a subliminal message to draw River out (and warn the crew while doing so).
