DRAUGADAE

I have been a fan of Firefly since seeing Serenity in the cinemas. It wasn't even my idea to go, I was with some friends, who insisted I accompany them. So I am something of a latecomer to the firefly universe.

As a science fiction fan, you would have thought I would have caught on earlier. But the truth is, I avoided firefly, actively. Everything I saw to advertise it made me sneer in disgust, what a pathetic premise for a series, and how dull it sounded, I would rather watch grass grow then waste a minute of my life on something so profoundly crap.

Could I have been more wrong? I don't think so.
The film stunned me.

I was in total awe, I, as a star wars fan, had never believed I would come across a film that caught my imagination in the way star wars had. Yet Serenity did... and more.

Of course you all know this. (that Firefly and Serenity are fantastic... not necessarily how I came to that conclusion)

But serenity, firefly, they are truly masterpieces. every time I sit down and watch an episode I feel utter bemusement... how could fox cancel it? HOW COULD THEY??

The only conclusion I could reach, is that the executives responsible for firefly, didn't watch it, hardly suprising I suppose, they watch pilots to decide if it sounds good, and then move on with their life, and the ratings dictate if their gamble was a success or a failure. If its not meeting the line, or attracting the interest these shows rely upon, a bullet is put into it, losses are cut, and the next project invested in.

And with reality television shows, there is a lot of easy, quick money to be made for practically nothing, so that is where money should be invested.

All makes perfect sense. All of these are things you know, or at least are aware of in some sense.

Others have talked about buying shares in Fox before, and the idea has been shot down. Makes sense, there aren't anywhere near enough firefly fans to serious effect Foxs parent company. NewsCorp, who own Fox, have a market cap of $91Billion. So there would have to be 100 million firefly fans willing and able to invest $100 a piece in buying those shares to have a 1% stake in newscorp, which would definetely catch their attention.... but there aren't that many of us. yet.

All it took for me to love serenity and firefly, was sitting down and watching them. After I saw serenity, I had to see firefly, and each episode was a work of bloody art. My favourite has to be out of gas, and when you reach the end, you feel so very cheated by the knowledge that they cancelled it... HOW COULD THEY???

Anyway. The thought goes, that if sitting down and watching Serenity, or even a whole firefly episode are all it takes to hook me, I imagine the chances are relatively good that others will feel likewise. Its part of how the numbers of browncoats has slowly but steadily risen.

We can't influence Newscorp... but there are people who can.

Substantial Shareholders
Name % Holding
Cruden Investments 29.7800
Citigroup Inc 10.6700
Liberty Media Corporation 9.1500
Fidelity Int. 7.2000

If an entity were to be trusted with some donations by firefly fans, via paypal or some such, to purchase box sets and serenity DVDs from a distributor, and then send these parcels of hope and joy to the families of boardmembers of each of these companies (not forgetting 20th Century Fox Television and NewsCorp) with a business case that demonstrated sales of box sets, dvds, and more importantly public feelings such as those from SFX poll that had Serenity topping Star Wars, and then pointing at the value of the Star Wars businesses as an asset (and of course Star Trek as well while we are at it, another series that didn't originally win quite the support history has shown it deserved at its first airing) supported by the common beliefs of its weakness when it was originally aired... something could be done to suggest that this particular business asset should be revisited.

Its an idea, and like many before it, will likely recieve cursory attention, and perhaps be shot down for one reason or another without suggestion as to how it might be modified to better address that issue, but there is always that perhaps, perhaps there is something to it, perhaps the desire of friends and family of businessmen, not to mention the businessment themselves, might be enough to have this raised as a query by people who do hold sway.

Would be interested in others thoughts.

Regards

JONGSSTRAW

I think your view of what occurred at Fox is pretty accurate......these folks care not one iota about the quality of any show's content, they only care about ratings ....ratings equal advertising revenues.

If we look at the recent "resurrection" of cancelled Jericho, where the fans sent nuts to the network headquarters and saved their show....we Browncoats should have mailed en masse cow piles and strawberries to Fox....and I'm guessing that a few probably did just that.

I have not watched any show on Fox in 1 1/2 years...that is how I live with it....I don't believe that "organized" financial attacks or pressure will sway Fox back to Firefly. The movie box office gross was a huge disappoinment for everybody....money people usually don't set themselves up to get burned twice.

I've come to a placid state of mind concerning Firefly...I watch the episodes, the movie, the fan documentary, download every pic I can glean off the web, etc. That's how I live with it....Also...it t'aint all that bad if this is all there ever will be...it's unique, special, and outstanding...if it ultimately never rises above cult status ( as opposed to mainstream Trek or Star Wars ) ...so what?! I got it, and if no one else in the verse ever sees it, not my problem and I can live with that. Stay loose haoli!
