I just read the Tim Minear interview and one question was "was there supposed to be 'that' kind of tension between simon and river?" tim's answer 'it's not like we didn't notice" i haven't seen the show since it went off the air and my dvd has yet to arrive. But i really didn't notice any weird kind of tension between the 2 other than the reasonalbe kind of tension, i sure didn't notice anything wacky enough to qualify a 'that'

You know, I noticed it but really kind of thought I was just having dirty thought and that it wasn't intentional.

I still don't think it was intentional, but I'm glad to know that I wasn't the only one who picked up on that. Makes me feel less deviant.

okay i know i am incredibly naive but i saw it as just an example of extreme devotion to a sibling and of course river would view him as her hero and adore him but sexual tension whoa horsie maybe i just don't want to see but if it is there then GOD DAMN oh excuse me GORRAM

well, you know, i don't disagree. i just think that the actors had a strong sexual chemistry that came out despite the fact that they were only playing brother/sister

i just think it was one of those things that happens with actors sometimes - not intended by them or the writers.

simon is overcompensating for deep-seated feelings of guilt over violations incurred upon his sister. enhanced by powerlessness to immediately rescue her from the "school" she was in. they don't sound like springer people, so they're probably just from a close-knit family.

I got the feeling that Simon and River just unusually close, but not necessarily to their parents. I think they've always taken care of each other emotionally. I didn't get the impression there parents were there much more than financially.

I am extremely close to my sister, and I know TWINS who have been accused of being "that".Our society (USA, but Western too) in general just seem to promote family but not truly close relationships.

I don't see ANYTHING sexual. And I REALLY don't want to.

I think 'that' kind of tension was probably the reason why the third deleted scene on the DVD, well, was deleted. Watch.

And I'm also glad I wasn't the only one who noticed 'that' . . .

The dvd commentary during War Stories with Wash and Mal has a small blurb on this subject, wherein they also mention a tension between Simon and River, or rather Sean and Summer.

-------------------------------------------
Inara: Who's winning?
Simon: I can't really tell, they don't seem to be playing by any civilized rules that I know.

Um, I didn't notice anything of the sort. But I shall certainly be watching more closely when the DVDs arrive!

Book: “A duel?”
Wash: “With swords?”
Simon: “The Captain's a good fighter, he must know how to handle a sword?”
Zoe: “I think he knows which end to hold.”
